I'm not sure whether this would be better in Family Forum or Health so I'm going to post in both.
My sister just found out that my neice may have ADDH. They still have to do more tests on her to be sure. The doctors have talked about Ritilin. From what we've read, there are mixed results using this. We've been looking through the internet, trying to learn more about this.
My sister was hoping to find some info on perhaps managing this with other alternative such herbal or diet. Any insight would be so much appreciated.

is this a new form or do you mean ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper-active Disorder)? I myself have ADD. its a rather mild form, as i do not have nor have ever had to take any medications for it. i do, however, display a few common symptoms. i really haven't found it to be much of a problem after elementary school. anyone else have ADD or ADHD?

I know many times a food allergy can mask as ADD/ADHD
can she afford an allergist?
If not she may try starting with basics like white flour (that seems to be a common link)
maybe do a search on food allergy links
luck and love

Red food coloring allergies are the most common mistaken food allergy.

I would agree with Yvonne on that! My daughter had a sever reaction to red color in a RX when she was little and we had to pull all colors (in food) from our home. And red is in just about everything!
She appeared to have had a stroke and was only 2 years old. Thank the goddess she didn't and it all cleared up when the color got out of her system. But it was very scary.
It is amazing how food allergies can really change who you are.

My nephew has been diagnosed with this. His parrents tried all avenues before resorting to meds. These don't always work and it can take awhile trying to find the correct dose. Something that seems to have worked wonders is a physical therapist. Apparently children with this ADHD tend to have sensory problems and can benifit greatly from something as simple as an exercise ball and a hair brush. The brush can be rubbed gently on the arm. Lying the child on their stomach on the ball and letting them walk to a standing position and back can be very benaficial. He has improved loads since he started physical therapy. Best of luck. :)

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm pretty sure my sis said ADDH but now, I'm not sure. On the internet search, I found info for ADDH, ADAH, ADHD, ADD. Reading through the info, they sound similiar but not the same. She's taking my neice in to get more testing done & we should know more. At least now, she'll know what the doctors are talking about.
We did find something helpful about using diet to manage this. That's something she's going to discuss with the doctors as well.

my own opinion is that most of the AD??whatever diagnosis are overly used, and often used to label kids that are just being kids.
Im not saying that many kids, and even adults don't suffer from the symtoms attributedt to the AD??? categories of problems.
Most of these cases are a matter of brain disfunction that can be treated without ritilan if the doctor just knows what they are dealing with. Sadly, most don't. It is much easier to say a kid has ADD, ADHD, ect.., and give them a drug for it than to actually understand what is causing the problem. And that is if there really is a problem and its not just a kid being a kid, or a kid without parental control.
Folks with these difficulties are ussually suffering from improperly functioning frontal lobes. This can be treated very non- invasively by a doctor that know the nervous system and how it functions.
That is the reason that physical therapy and sensory input noted by Drisel works. it stimulates and builds strength in the frontal lobes of the brain.
If you truly want to avoid drugs and fix the problem i would suggest finding a good chiropractic neurologist.

I have also heard that Chiropractic can have amazing results on AD** (whatever!), I dunno how it works exactly but it might be worth looking into, as far as I'm aware Ritalin is a dreadful drug and should be avoided if at all possible. Hope your sis finds a solution that works Wildchild:)

when i was in early high school, my best friend was on ritalin(?) and it really messed him up. he dragged hardcore. he was tired all the time, waaay to mellow, and it just bugged me out. i'm glad i knew well enough not to take it myself when it was suggested to me.

I have ADHD...it's not a big deal *shrugs* And you can't prove someone has it with test ;) You can prove the hyper activity part though :) Give the person Mountain Dew...if it knocks them out, 9 times out of 10, they have a hyper activity disorder :$
Btw..I recommend Dexadrine or however you spell it :) I used to take Ritalin, but it was just...no *lol* Dexadrine does the same thing, but doesn't have the same side affects as Ritalin :) Ask your doctor about it nod :$ Or your neice's doctor :$
