You must remember that some Gods and Goddesses are young "aspects" of an older God or Goddess. That may not make sense, but it will, the further along you study.

(Don't you hate answers lke that?) :D

so faunus is a younger aspect than dianus?i've also heard that as humans moved into a farmer kind of trend that they no longer saw the stag of the hunter/gatherer as important as domasticated animals such as the goat.have i heard right?

Young Zemblin,

There are many Gods and Goddesses that portray what we envision. Pan and Connunus are respectably close to the same. They are both protectors of the forest and horned Gods but come from different cultures (though Pan had a better sense of humor, in my opinion).

What I am saying is that there are many Deities that share the same roll but they come from many walks of life- Celtic, Egyptian, Shaman, etc.). Some are Black, some White. It is this vast array that gives us hope and detours discrimination within.

You may know your own path but, in time, that could change. Be open to the Goddess and the Gods - they vary and will define your path, though you will always be changing.

Oh, and you're not a bum.

Dianus in the form of Kern/Hern the stag god is an older god. In the stregheria mythos he comes into play during the season that many wiccans would call Beltain. He is the mature virile god... the stag is also the connection the summer of the year. He takes the role of a fertility god.
Dianus in the form of faunus that is the mischevious trickster.. the youth.
Just a rough summary. Just restating what has already been said :)
