Okay, yesterday one of my supes here at work (who is an ex-military biker, BTW) said that he got a message on his answering machine the night before. His machine is programmed to display every phone number that calls, and when he saw the light blinking he checked the number.
There wasn't one.
Then he & his wife listened to the message, it sounded like a little old lady saying his name and that she had to talk to him. Then she hung up.
After they listened to it two or three times, it dawned on them that it sounds just like her grandmother, who has been dead for quite a while.
Weird.

I've heard of such tales before, but they're usually told as urban legends...
It's fascinating that you know someone who experienced this! I wonder if there's any logical explanation for these phenomenon?

sounds like EVP to me as well. Maybe he should go to a reputed psychic and find out what she needs to say.

I had this happen to me when my grandfather passed away. The message was blank, though--no voice. However, the answering machine was not plugged in and came on in the middle of the night (the welcome message played and then it recorded a sound of silence without static or anything). Hubby was with me when it happened. The cord for the machine was wrapped around itself, and it was far away from any phone line or electrical outlets.
The answering machine came on twice with a time span of about 15 minutes in between each occurrence. About 15 minutes after the last time it came on, our main phone rang. It was my mother, informing me my grandfather had passed. I said, "Let me guess. It occurred about 15-20 minutes ago." She replied, "How did you know!"
The silence that was recorded during the message-taking parts of the event was the most quiet silence I have *ever* heard recorded on a machine. Most times there is static or something. There was nothing in this case, nothing but pure quiet.
Hubby is an agnostic athiest and did not believe in ghosts or anything paranormal. After living with me for a few years, he will now tell you there are things he has witnessed that he cannot explain.

Can you "141" a US phone? Here in the UK, you just dial 141 before you dial a number, and the caller ID won't show up on the phone that anwers; I believe you can program some phones to do it automatically.
Possibly, it was one of those?

Maybe the American phone system contains a withheld number ETC. But for the voice to "sound like" and call that machine, seems to denote contact. It may be a misplaced call, but with the voice sounding similar to someone recognised, it is a good conincedence not to be dismissed as a wrong number.

We have those over here but as I understand it, it will show "Calling Number Blocked" on the screen.
This showed nothing...

He could have been just pulling your hair. As far as I know, this only happens in movies.
