Looking through this forum. i have not seen one thread(unless i missed it)dedicated to turquoise. So here it is. please add to it thank you:
First discovered by the crusaders in Turkey which is why it is named turquoise. although it was used by ancient Egyptians and Greeks as well as Native Americans. Medieval beliefs was it gave peace and happiness, vitrue and loyalty to women and success to men. Navajo use powered turquoise along with powdered coral to create sand paintings and bring rain. Many cultures used it to protect the dead.

A ring made of turquoise is very protective and help with health matters.

astrologically it is linked with either aquarius or scorpio,sagititarius/pisces.

The stone corrisponds to the planets Venus and Neptune and the metal Gold.

Estsanatlehi was the turquoise-sky goddess in Navajo mythology.

In the 13th century, Turquoise was thought to protect the wearer from falling especially from horses.

Legend has it that the Indians believed that if turquoise was affixed to a bow, the arrows shot from it would always hit their mark. It was also believed to bring happiness and good fortune to all.

Turquoise started being used before 4000 BC.

In Indian folklore it is said that there was once a chief with turquoise colored skin. One day he was running from his enemies in the hot desert. Whenever he stopped to rest, his perspiration ran onto the ground, collected in rocks and became turquoise.

There are many legends about Turquoise; The Pima consider it to bring good fortune and strength and that it helped overcome illness. The Zuni believe that blue turquoise was male and of the sky and green turquoise was female and of the earth. Pueblo Indians thought that its color was stolen from the sky. In Hopi legend the lizard who travels between the above and the below, excretes turquoise and that the stone can hold back floods. The Navajo consider it as good fortune to wear and believe it could appease the Wind Spirit

as well, turquoise is fantastic to wear as an 'indicator' ... kinda like a mood ring. it changes color if something is wrong ... if you wear turquoise a lot, and it is slowly changing colors, something is not right in one of your being fields, physical, emotional or spiritual. it can also dramatically change colors if you begin doing something that will harm you ... it can also inform you if someone is lying ... if they are wearing the stone and it changes color, you can suspect what they are saying is not 'right'.

namaste,

as many of you know, Turquoise is not only a very beautiful and seeked stone, but unfortunatelly also one of those stones that are very likely to be copied, faked, or beautified in order to sell less expensive material to the customer and make them believe that was Turquoise.

Often its rather easy to find out whether itis s a dyed howlte/magnesite or tourquoise by weight. Turquoise is very light, while magnesite of the same size is more heavy.

with some experience you can also tell it by touching them.

whats harder to tell though is the so called reconstructed tourquoise from stabilized or even natural ones. what is for sure that most of the tourquoise sold is not the naturally grown turquise, nor stabilized, not even reconstructed but artificial.

1. natural turquoise
is very bristle (sp?), breaks easily, not very well for polishing/cutting
2. stabilized turquoise
is natural tourquoise with a little of artificial transparent (non coloured)artificial resin, protecting it from breaking apart. used in most tumbled stones, many rough stones even, better turquise-jewelry
3. reconstructed turquoise
is the powder of turquoise and "waste" from the cutting of the stone, mixed with larger quantities of artificial resin (which often containes dye to intensify/alter the colour of the stone). used in most "genuine turquoise" jewelry
4. so called reconstructed turquoise
dyed magnsite or howlite, or even pebble. easily distinguable by weight from the real thing
5. artificial resin products, plastic and other immitations. often only detectable through tests like cutting the stone, burning it etc.

I hope this helps

Here some other info on Turquoise:

Turquoise was known as "Thyites" to the ancient Greeks. It does protect aganist many things but, it also attracts wealth; considered the lucky stone. However, working w/ turquoise is one thing, wearing it is another. Some people shouldn't wear it, some people's vibrations just don't mesh well. So, check your feelings carefully before wearing it.

Sky blue shades belong to the Sun and Venus
Ice blue shades to Saturn
Green blue shades to Uranus.
- said by Mellie Uyldert "The Magic of Percious Stones"

With those choices above hopefully you can find the right vibrational fit. If not, there is plenty of other stones to choose from :)
