I made myself a set of Elder Futhark runes today.
(Out of some of that Sculpey polymer clay)
Is there anything special I should do with them before I start using them?

Traditionally, the of making runes involves three parts: giving the rune shape (i.e. carving/drawing the runic sigil), giving the rune ond, sacred breath (i.e. singing/speaking/chanting the rune's name), and giving the rune substance (i.e. staining or blooding the rune).
You've already given them shape, seems like all you need to do is sing their names & stain them, and you'll be ready to Ragnarok-n-roll (sorry, a little Heathen humor... it's always funnier in my head :T )

after youve done all that, you want to put your own personal energy into each rune...you can do that by having as much physical contact with them as possible. holding them in your hands, putting them under your pillow, ect. once they have your personal energy in them, they are ready to use.:boing:

Hail All
Love the wise words Rick I have one question why Blut und Boden when it is most times used as in blut und darm but your is much nicer:thumbsup:
I get carried away sometimes.
In the Hamaval it has all the instructions, but they are quite right. When I make a new set I always keep them with me for at least a moon or two. Some people are kinda ify about the "reddening" thing with all the blood born things now days. But it is of your choice and if you read for others you decide if you want others to touch them. Personally I have a set I only use outside the house for others (which I did not use my blood.) I always keep a piece of Black Kyanite to remove any left over energy from someone else. Also I have never tried you use anything but glass, wood (oak that has been struck with lighting is the coolest) and natural earth clay. They become very personal things. They are most interesting and can tell you much.

Blut und Boden... blood and soil... to me, sorta sums up what Heathenism is about: family and hearth, kin and country...
Blut und darm... blood and guts... isn't a bad motto, either... :hehehehe:

I'm currently working on a set when I have any free time at work, I'm making them for SS. Right now I'm bending wire in various positions to heat with a torch to burn the symbols into the word. I am still under which kind of wood to use. I'm thinking walnut or hickory.

There's a set in my album that I made of Tiger's Eye..
I've really liked how they work with me.
Shrugs to each their own.
