I never have got to see it live yet but I own the soundtrack, and OMG it is spectacular! It far surpasses Moulin Rouge! (Although I still love it!;)) It's just great! OMG, I can't say anything better about it! Has anyone seen it? Did you like it? Hate it?:D:D:D

Yes, I've seen it several times - I've been a big fan since it came out in '96. The most recent touring company in Nashville sucked swamp water, so I hope you see a good one!
I probably know every word in the libretto!
Congrats on discovering such a rockin' show. Hope you continue to enjoy!

I can't tell you enough, if you ever get the chance to see Rent, DO IT!!
I have seen it three times (cried each time) and I am still not done. I have to take my hubby soon, hoping for this summer. I also have seen Tick, Tick, BOOM!, which is an autobiographical play based by Jonathan Larson, who wrote Rent, and died before it opened on Broadway. I don't know if that is still playing. It was Off B-Way and was struggling after 9-11. But a must see if it is still around. I still get chills thinking of it. **thinks about grabbing the soundtrack to listen to today**
I know Lucidia and I have babbled about Rent here before too. :)
It is a mind/attitude altering story and the music ROCKS!
As it says in my sig~ No day but today!

I tried to see it several times while living in New York City, but it always seemed to be sold out when I went for tickets. I bought the soundtrack and know/knew most of it by heart.
It wasn't until I moved to Finland that I actually saw the musical. Of course, it was entirely in Finnish. Luckily, as I mentioned earlier, I knew the entire soundtrack, so it was very enjoyable to be nonetheless.
Won't you light my candle,

I give it a thumb up. I'd actually give it two, but I'm only allowed one.
RENT was the huge musical for 96. It's a shame the musical theatre community doesn't create more cutting edge modern musicals. However, Sondheim remains my absolute favorite composer of all time.

Maybe because I've really been a homeless squatter, gay bashed, lost friends to AIDS, and studied musical theatre.
I DIDN'T walk out at intermission because my wife had always wanted to see it.
If I'd talked about it with her, we'd both have walked out.
I **WANTED** to like it. I love theatre.
Trite, obnoxious, and as musicals go just horrible.
If I'd never seen anything else, maybe I would've liked it.
I've seen High School productions of Guys and Dolls with more merit.
Put on your best stylish homeless clothes a la rent, and stand outside a second rate touring company of Les Miserables with a sign saying "I thought rent was great" and maybe someone will give you a ticket out of pity.
Or hell, go see Tommy. That rocks and doesn't suck but still is "short attention span theatre"...
Or the stage versions of beauty and the beast or Lion king...
At least they are realistic.
But I loved Rent the first time when the plot was less cynical and it was called Hair......

Precisely:) Although I do completely disagree with you Windsinger. I feel that the lines are catchy, it's risky and yet it still does a good job portraying the lives of the people.

I have friends who play the soundtrack (and sing along at the top of their lungs) constantly. Ugh.

I saw Rent in Chicago about two years ago and it was phenomenal....I know the soundtrack by heart and I actually sang some of the songs for rehearsals back in high school. Great musical with a powerful message!

Who said they loved Sondheim? I'm with you, can't get enough of his music. But I'm a theatre geek, it's my whole life, so unless it's Oklahoma staged by a bad community theatre in Idaho, there's nothing I can't see without having something or other nice to say.
If the only production of Rent I'd seen was the last touring company through Nashville, I'd have totally agreed with Windsinger. Fortuantely I've seen other awesome versions.
I saw a local community theatre production of Hair a year or so ago. Oh the pain! That was one of the worst things ever. (And I love that soundtrack too).
The same group is putting on Sondheim's "Company" next month, and I shudder to think how it will be butchered.
