When you cast a Circle, you need not always draw a physical one as well, it's just simply not mandatory - but rather, depends on your mental outlook on the properties of your magickal boundaries, including the four quarters, in a physical sense, are usually candles. A practical, modern way such as I myself practice is to buy four sconces--candleholders that are permanantly attached to the walls by screws. You can put your choice of candles in them, and you will have, in a sense, a "temple" all your own.
Of course, you can draw your Circle "through" the walls. What you are doing is creating sacred space. This space is not limited by matter or time. In a very powerful Circle, you may realize that three hours have gone by, and it felt like thirty minutes. The physical aspect of your Circle is only for your conscious mind to comprehend that there is, in fact, a barrier between the mundane world and sacred space, where you raise energy, the same type of energy that you draw your Circle with. Both are invisible, yes? Therefore, it is not limited by such mundane boundaries as physical matter.
When I am outside, I will create physical boundries of the four Directions by using the following:
East- A feather
South- A candle or windproof candle holder, or brazier with self lighting charcoal and herbs
West- a cup of water, or a sea shell
North- Some earth, a plant, a pentagram plate with an OfferingThe Circle itself is used to raise and protect you from magickal forces. They are intertwined in our lives, which is how people like us can manipulate the physical world around us with this "power".
