It's quite easy to make Halloween themed recipes for Halloween, but what about Samhain? The only recipe I have heard of was on the Food Network a few nights ago and it was this type of spice cookie Pagans used to make for Samhain. Have any more been found? I want to include Samhain recipes as well as Halloween recipes for my party.

We've had apple bread and pumpkin bread for our Samhain potluck the last couple of years. This year I'm making Irish Soda Bread. I've been looking at recipies off and on all week and found one today that I simply had to try. It says to bake until it's done - and you can tell when it's done if you knock on the bottom and it sounds hollow. So... Hollow-mass Bread, eh? ;)
Irish Soda Bread
3+3/4 cup flour (I used half white bread flour and half wheat flour)
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1+1/2 to 2 cups buttermilk**
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Sift dry ingredients together into a large bowl.
- Make a "well" in the center. Pour most of the milk into the well.
- Using one hand mix in flour from the sides, adding more milk if necessary until dough is softish (not wet or sticky).
- When it all comes together, turn dough out onto a floured board and knead lightly for a few seconds. (I sifted on a bit of flour and kneaded it in the bowl instead of having another item to be washed.)
- Put dough onto a baking pan and pat into a round about 1+1/2 inches thick.
- Cut a deep cross into it to "let the fairies out!" Let the cuts go over the edges of the round to make sure.
- Bake for 45 minutes - until it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom of the loaf.
**I didn't have buttermilk on hand so I made some by putting 1 Tbsp of lemon juice per cup of regular milk and letting stand while I sifted the dry ingredients. Vinegar also works if you don't have lemon juice.
I'm thinking of making a spread of shredded cheddar and cream cheeses to go with the bread. Yum. We traditionally have about 3 kinds of soup for our meal (Chili, Chicken Noodle, and Potato). They're frightfully good ! ;)
