I've tried this but I can't seem to stop subconciously counting and keep rhythm which influences the reading of course. Any tips on how to tune out when doing geomancy? Perhaps I should make longer lines so I lose track?

 It's an old form of divination, similar to the I-Ching. It involves scribbling lines of dots in the earth or with a pen on paper.

If you're interested I'll post some info on it...

Thanks for the links!

ahhh.. now I didn't know it was connected to Feng Shui. I figured it was simply another form of I-Ching but I've only used it as divinatory tool, Western style....

I am so happy that I read this thread. Like you, I am reading the I Ching right now too, Shnen. It's so clever, isn't it? Istead of intepretting the pictures of artwork on the Tarot, I like to think of the I Ching as interpretting the art of words. From what Earthcup has stated, geomancy sounds very similar to I Ching. I would love to learn more about geomancy, so hopefully, more people will add their input. :)

I've never read the I-Ching, I've read a little about it though.

I'll find my book and post what info I've got...

Fabulous, I would love to hear what you have read on the I Ching.:D

I've only really read enough to know what it is and how it works. For some reason I like complex divination(tarot) and simple(binary) and none of the ones in between!

*whips out article*

Geomancy is a binary divination system. Instead of flipping coins you poke four lines of dots, or other seperate designs, into the earth or scribble them on paper. You should attempt to do this without rhythm, watching your hand or keeping count. You can also grab a handful of beads, marbles, pebbles, skittles... and count them.

Once finished you count the number of dots in each line. An odd number is represented by one dot, even lines by two dots. There are sixteen possible patterns, each with a different meaning.

From what I understand this is a European divination system derived from the I-Ching. It would explain references to witches scribbling things in the dirt.

You can combine these in any multiple of four you like depending on how complex a reading you want.

I got this info from an article by John Michael Greer and have added my two cents. So take it with a grain of salt. I assume his info is accurate and I assume my theory about the I-Ching is accurate. :D

Thanks a million for posting this information, Earthcup. Yes, it looks very similar to I Ching. Wow, I could immediately tell that it was the European version of the I Ching based on the use of Latin. Hopefully, you learned more about this art of divination from typing all this information out.

Even though geomancy and I Ching appear to be very similar, I could tell some differences right away. For example, the I Ching uses hexagrams (6) and not four lines. Also, you can come up with one of sixty-four outcomes. The I Ching is kind of hard to decipher. I like to think of it as being painted with words, and you have to analyze these words very carefully.

I particulary liked your advice on how to do geomancy without rhythm. Why exactly do you do this? Do you do it so you keep your mind free and focused on the geomancy?

Yeah, I find if I keep a rhythm they all invariably turn out all odd or all even. Once it's divination, twice a coincidence, six times you're doing something wrong!

I like it because it's something that can be done anywhere and doesn't require special tools..

How did you get into geomancy, Earthcup? I tried looking up some information on the internet, and I found information on Feng Shui. I doubt that they are connected too closely. Also, I have looked for books on the subject, and I am out of luck on that also. I was wondering if there are any good books that you can recommend on the subject. I would like to have more in-depth look at it. As I told you before, geomancy is very similar to I Ching. Even after talking to people about I Ching, I never fully understood it until I read some good books on the subject.

Just an article in an old Llewellyn almanac. It's mentioned in the subheading of this board but I haven't found anything else on the Western version of geomancy. It's one of those things I want to research one day... In fact I may try some searches today. It's baseball season so the tv is lost to me till October.....:D
