Assuming you believe in reincarnation, do you think souls are species specific or could you have been a toad, daisy or alien in a former life?
I used to think souls were species specific but I'm a little more open to the idea of transmigration now....

A soul could go an eternity without going in another form other then human. Or it could go only in insect form. The soul has the choice to choose.

In my own tradition souls of humans do not enter animals. They begins as newborn souls and progress to the Infinite.
Animal souls are of a different sort of consciousness, on their way to becoming the sort of soul that inhabits humans.
I do think that astral souls, or rather a portion of one can enter an animal.
Sometimes its necessary, for example to protect or guide someone. Sometimes the lesson is one the soul must learn.

That makes it sound like animal souls are less than human souls, that they have to work to become like humans.

I suppose the best way to explain it is that every animal is part of the soul of that species as each ant is part of the colony. Together the colony makes a functional whole.
Humans have souls that have more individual variation while they evolve eventually to reunite with the Infinite.
Animal souls also reunite with the Infinite, moving from simple to complex life forms. They evolve. So do we.

Souls choose forms as befits the lesson they need to learn. If they must learn at first to learn the most basic of things, so are they incarnated as the most basic of things. They might begin as one celled organisms, proceed to simple animals, more complex animals, humans, etc.
I say that not because I think humans are better, but because they learn of art, literature, theatre, music, philosophy, science, and emotions such as hate, love, anger, sadness, etc. that some animals I feel probably don't experience. I can imagine animals like elephants, who mourn their dead and seek vengeance at times are higher up, along with more intelligent and complex animals, etc. I also believe very much that humans *are* animals. To me there isn't as much of a separation between living things as we would like to think.
It is my understanding that each soul is incarnated and reincarnated to learn its lessons (on this physical plane, and then to others) until it can become a spiritual guide or advisor (whether that be an animal spirit, a human guide, an angel, etc.) and then finally can choose to continue being a guide or become divinity.
So, in short yes I believe a soul can become any species through its incarnation, and in fact is incarnated into such specie or creature that we can't even imagine now, on this plane and on others.
