Interesting.
I know the ethylene theory from years back, now there's carbon dioxide mixed with methane and benzene (?).
I wonder if they'll ever figure it out and agree.

There may have been some other type of fumes or emissions, which were present in antiquity but don't exist now because the source finally 'ran out of gas' so to speak.

With all the earthquake action in that part of the world, who knows what geological phenomena have occurred over the millennia.
