Briar is used in Sleeping Beauty, she's often called Briar Rose.

I've seen Sleeping Beauty interpreted as the Sleeping Goddess and her awakening. The story is in fact full of deep symbolism (a lot of fairy tales are).

Perhaps there is a message or lesson for you within it's words?

Here's a great site for fairy tales: SurlaLune Fairy Tales (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/)
Here's Sleeping Beauty: Sleeping Beauty (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/sleepingbeauty/index.html)
Here's the annotated symbolism info (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/sleepingbeauty/notes.html#ONE)
And similar tales around the world: Similar Tales Across Cultures (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/sleepingbeauty/other.html)

Maybe you should read it, then meditate and see what answers you get?

There doesn't have to be a god or goddess behind it, just the Uinverse giving you a sign to learn and grow from :) Maybe you need to rest only to reawaken anew. Or look deep within.

Recently with my water/ocean obsession and the signs I was getting I assumed it was a deity. I looked. Thought about it. Discovered some that worked, ones that I was led to. Did a ritual. And then realize that there was no name, just a title. An energy.
It's in my thread about it. I posted my revelation there too.
Ritual Question: reveal deities? (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=143211)
people gave some good advice there.

ETA:
I think there's a Tarot card that cooresponds to this as well...
Four of Swords maybe?
In my deck (Robin Wood) it shows a sleeping statue and in the interpretation book, mentions Sleeping Beauty.

Oh and a site (http://www.gwu.edu/~folktale/GERM232/sleepingb/)that talks about Sleeping Beauty symbolism and interpretation

Also roses and spindles and sleep are big parts of the tale.
All are full of symbolism. And can look into that and see what you learn.

Spindles for example are linked to the sun or moon, spinning and weaving, fate and destiny, etc...many goddesses were linked to spinning and weaving (Spinning & Weaving Goddesses - All Fiber Arts (http://www.allfiberarts.com/library/aa01/aa021901.htm)). Maybe that wull lead you to some sort of anwser.
See if the other symbols fit with the whole picture too.

hey. thank you so much for all the thoughtful links! i really appreciate it. i'm gonna check the links out now. the whole sleeping beauty thing is very interesting. i was reading the wikipedia article on sleeping beauty last month and found it really interesting... but then i forgot all about it until now. its weird... i was meditating and this skinny guy with black hair was talking to me. i wanted to know his name but he kept just saying brier or something... i was like "okay... i'm probably just imagining this." but he said i wasn't and that i should look up briar and talk to him again. if briar is a goddess why would a male come to me? i was/am very confused, but i guess its supossed to be like this. thanks again! :)

The man could have been symbolic. Sleeping Beauty was sleeping and men tried to get though the briars to awaken her. Maybe he wasn't telling you his name, but of something else. If in your meditation you sort of fell into this scene, perhaps you ran into someone on the way to Sleeping Beauty and the briars. Not sure if that makes sense. Maybe the word briar was the one thing that would spark you're mind to remember.

You did say you read about Sleeping Beauty of Wikipedia last month and found it intersting. Maybe at that time you weren't ready to take in the meaning and symbolism of it. So your mind brushed it under the rug until this meditation where you get this info with led you back to this tale.

Sleeping Beauty isn't a goddess, though she may represent one. She can also represent the psyche and unconscious and women in general in various archeypes and all that. Sleeping Beauty may even be you.

I think before you get to who it could be you have to understand the symbolism and how it relates to you. This all may just represent a transition for you or a awakening or even a time for rest. Not everything ends up being a deity, I know this from personal experiences. The mind works in odd ways and perhaps that scene you were in and this tale is a lesson and message and nothing more. I don't know. I think it'll take time to discover the name of who's behind this, if in fact anyone is.

About Briar:

This is the species of rose that the "briar rose" is: Rosa canina. (http://www.arikah.net/encyclopedia/Rosa_canina)
Other old folk names include rose briar (also spelt brier), briar rose, dogberry, sweet briar, wild briar, witches' briar, and Briar hip.

There's also the Sweet Brier (http://www.theeglantine.com/sweetbrier.html) aka Eglantine.

Brier or briar is a common name for a number of unrelated thicket-forming thorny plants, including species in the genera Rosa, Rubus and Smilax.

Anyway, good luck with your search!
