I understand that the runes are an ancient form of writing; I have been using them for years, my mother, although a devout catholic has had them as long as I can remember, and we have used them when a situation troubles us. I was recently warned by someone that they are evil, and could evoke bad spirits, it spiked my interest as to why someone would say such a thing, could you suggest any literature that I could read on the topic, non bias, please. Also, I was wondering, should I be more careful while using them, I always ask to be blessed with divine guidance from the source, before doing a reading, am I in any risk of being harmed by evil. Ok, that’s it, I still think runes are a wonderful tool and not to be frequently abused...but I really don't know much about their history, so any suggestions would be great.

Actually this might get a better response on the divination board. I'll get someone to move it for you!

Runes are not evil, any more than tarot or pendulums, or I Ching. There are a lot of Rune threads here... you might try a search in Divination, & Magic & Ritual... as far as reading, try Futhark by Edred Thorsson...

A lot of what gets labled "evil" are things which are misunderstood. It used to be considered evil to do medical operations or to even examine the insides of the human body. Today we call it science but there was a time it could get you thrown in jail, accused of witchcraft, shunned by society or even executed. I think the best place to start for answers would be to ask the person who told you why *they* think it is evil. If they don't have any history or or information to back up their claims then it's more likely that they either heard it from some where else and isn't founded on facts of any kind or that they don't understand it and therefore consider it evil.
