I made a post in the Magical Creatures forum about Slavic vampires, and someone suggested looking into Slavic mythology, and i was wondering, does anyone know of any good sources, like sites or maybe books, on Slavic mythology, especially those relating to Slavic vampires as i'm interested in learning about them, as apparantly they're different to the modern conception of them (i have a fascination with the various 'mythological' and supernatural beings of different myths, plus part of me would love to be a writer, and if i write something, involving the supernatural, i'd like to use historical and 'mythological' sources, just to give it that touch of 'reality').

Thanks for any help you can give me :).

Well, there's the book The Bath House At Midnight by WF Ryan...it focuses on Russia mostly and more magic and religion than mythology, but I'm sure it has some information....one of these days I might even read it. And it's....dense. Very desnse and very academic.

There's also The Early Slavs: Culture And Society In Medieval Eastern Europe by PM Barford. I've not read it, but it's on the ADF Dedicant's suggested reading list, so I suspect that it's decent.

I might suggest those as places to start, but that would probably be rude of me, so I won't suggest searching those places first.

Well I read all I could about Slavic mythology and paganism when I was researching my ancestral paths. My mom's side is Slavic and German.

A bunch of links can be found here: Slavic Paganism Links (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=143934)
There is now a sub-forum in Paths for Slavic Paganism too.

No. I agree and I don't think it's rude to suggest them. I always do searchs and reseach on my own. It's only when it's not a reseach matter or I have no luck with the reasearch that I ask questions like these.
Yahoo.com is easy to use and all you have to do is put keywords in there:
"Slavic Mythology"
"Slavic Paganism"
"Slavic Pantheon"
"Slavic Vampires"
You'll get tons of info, David.

Feel free to discuss any of the mythology here, that's what this place is for:
Discussing, debating, sharing and analyzing Myths and Folklore :)

Look that up, and also vyrkalak and vantoase - some more direct terms that may get you to the right place.
I did a bit of research on that subject for a story I wrote - if I think of any more I'll post them. :vamp:

I realize this thread is a bit old, but I'm going to revive it. :uhhuhuh:

Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality by Paul Barber is an EXCELLENT book for what you're looking for. Barber talks about the mythology of the vampire in Eastern Europe and how it relates to the natural physiological processes of death. If you want to read about bloated corpses and blood oozing out of orifices, this book is for you.
