View Full Version : Name That Eastern God

Hey all...

Ok Im going to mstart and resurrect an old Mysticwicks game...the old guess what god this is game. The only criteria here is that the personality HAS to be raditionally an Eastern God/Goddess (Or Kami...Bodhisattva/P'usa what have you)... OK here goes the first turn:

I am the colour of the azure sky. Named Protector of Doctors...my serene face brings the compassion of healing to all...My image is strung high in the mountains and low through the grassy northern plains...who am I?

*Goes searching*

Um is it Murukan?

I've always been more drawn to Padmasambhava - that wicked grin, and the "errol flynn" tache.

BenSt
November 25th, 2006, 11:31 AM
hehe...I actually made a tiny error...he is the leader of the eastern paradise. It is:

Bhaisajya guru

http://www.norbulingka.org/arts/applique/appliquegallery/medicinebuddha.jpg

The Medicine Buddha who is the leader of all Tibetan Lama Doctors.

Its true though that Amitabha is the western Paridise though.

Murukan, good try but he's usually pink :)

I know what you mean Ian... did you ever get a chance to see a Canadian/BBC production for the national Film Board of Canada called "WEods of my perfect teacher" ?

OK, Its Ian's turn since he was closest...

Wow. Pre-Vedic. Sheesh.
This one is tricky.
*researching*

My first guesses are Saraswati, who has pre-Vedic, Vedic and Hindu links. In the earliest times she was associated with her now dried up river.

&

Aditi, who is in the Vedas, but seems to be older than that (proto-Aditi figures have been found in Harappan and Mohenjo-Daro). She's called the "mother of the gods" so I could see how she'd be called the mother of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

Chamunda??? Good guess, but again your not quiet on the nail just yet. Give you another hint- according to Wikipedia
Annually, the women of South India who believe in Ammavaru conduct a ritual prayer to the deity. A metal pot filled with rice is used to symbolize the goddess' body. The pot is clothed in a traditional sari. At the mouth of the pot, a painted coconut is used to symbolize the head. Varying implements are used to fashion the eyes, ears, and nose of the Goddess

lol yup it's Little Mithra :)

Who slaughtered and was drenched in the blood of a Bull. In Roman Mithraism, a rite common in initiations was that a Bull was slughtered above an initiate, who was then drenched and 'reborn' in the blood of the sacrifice. Mithra is speculated to have travelled down with the Aryan/Persian peoples... and became a minor deity of Vedic religion, a major attendant of Ahura Mazda in Mazdaism and Zoroastrianism, and was imported from Bactria by the Greco-Iranian peoples of the kingdoms of Scythia/Bactria back to Greece where he went on to become a God in Rome.

Didn't knew Mithras was Indian too ^^"

Off topic, slighly.
Yup he was, for more info:

Mitra (Proto-Indo-Iranian, nominative *mitras) was an important Indo-Iranian divinity. Following the prehistoric cultural split of Indian and Iranian cultures, names descended from *mitra were used for the following religious entities:

Mitra (Sanskrit Mitrá-, Mitráḥ), a deity (asura) who appears frequently in the ancient Indian text of the Rigveda.
Mithra (Avestan Miθra-, Miθrō), a yazata mentioned in the Zoroastrian sacred scripture of the Avesta, whose modern Persian equivalent is Mehr.
Mithras, the principal figure of the Greco-Roman religion of Mithraism. For more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitra)

There's more than one with similar myths, iconography and such.
The Roman Mithras is the most well known, but as you can see it started with a Vedic god. :) Oh and just because it's interesting, here's info about Proto-Indo-European deities: Proto-Indo-European Religion -> Deities (http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkjuQb0tGwjYBzAhXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE2ZHVuZ3E3BGNvbG8DdwRsA1dTMQRwb3MDMwRzZWMDc3IEdnRpZANGNjU1X zc1/SIG=121jvs5kk/EXP=1179435280/**http%3a//www.ceisiwrserith.com/pier/deities.htm) (which is slightly different than Proto Indo Iranian, but there's some overlap).

I like him :) He's one of the Hindu gods many seem to overlook. He's very popular in S. India and those regions, though. He's got an interesting history, too, being the son of Shiva and Vishnu (as Mohini)...I read an account that said Shiva was overcome with lust at seeing Mohini (and in some Shiva knew is was Vishnu as a female) and well, Ayyappan was born.

It's actually a funny story too. Shiva basically chased Mohini around like an animal in heat, while Parvati simply looked on, smirking at Him :p

To keep things going here's the answer: Myōken

Myōken (Myoken) is the deification of the north Pole Star and the Big Dipper (Great Bear constellation, Ursa Major). The term Myōken 妙見 literally means heavenly eyes, heavenly sight, penetrating sight, one who sees all, or simply “good eyesight.” In Japan, worship of the northern Pole Star (Hokushin 北辰) along with the seven stars of the Big Dipper (Hokuto Shichisei 北斗七星) is a syncretic blend of Buddhism, Taoism, Onmyōdō 陰陽道 (Yin-Yang Divination), and local kami cults, but it is especially important within Esoteric Buddhism, and from the Heian period (794-1180) onward, Myōken was venerated under various guises as the central star controlling all other celestial bodies, one believed to control the life and fortunes of the people, one who protected not only the emperor and country, but also warded off diseases, prevented calamities of fire and other disasters, increased life spans, and healed eye diseases. As a deification of the Pole Star, Myōken was also worshipped as the deity of safe voyages and navigators. In Japan, even today, s/he is venerated at both Buddhist temples and Shintō shrines. However, since the forced separation of Buddhism and Shintōism in the Meiji Period (1868-1912), shrines commonly replaced Myōken with a Shintō kami counterpart known as Ame no Minakanushi no Mikoto 天御中主尊 (Lord of the Center of the Sky).
