Hey Guys! As part of my university course Im writing an essay on the runes and how they 'work'. Coming from an eclectic Pagan background Ive only recently decided select the Northern way as my religious Path and as such could do with some pointers concerning this. Ive got some good books on the history and meaning of the runes themselves but have come up short with regard to how they actually operate. Could you help me by pointing out some of the ways that they 'work' for the practitoner?Cheers guys!xx

I don't know too much, but i've heard books by Edred Thorsson are good, especially his work on the runes, and i think he's pretty scholarly, and i've heard a lot of good things about his works.
Here's a list of some of the books he's published:
http://www.runegild.org/runaraven3.html, the rest of his site is cool too, so you might want to check it out, but this link will take you to his books on the runes.
Hope this helps your essay :).
Edit: I've also just found this site, reviewing a book on runes, it might be useful, http://www.runewebvitki.com/The%20Rune%20Primer.html.
There's also a lot of other articles on the site such as these ones:
Rune scholars (http://www.runewebvitki.com/Rune%20Scholars.htm)
Rune lore (http://www.runewebvitki.com/Rune%20Lore.htm)
Rune origins (http://www.runewebvitki.com/Rune%20Origins.htm)
Rune FAQs (http://www.runewebvitki.com/Runes%20F%20A%20Qs.htm)
Again, hope these help and i'm sure there are a lot of Heathens here who know more.
