View Full Version : Ideas for a December Writing Challenge!

We've tried this here a few times and at first everyone is excited to do it but few have participated to date. But I'm a glutton for punishement so lets try it again.

Would anyone be interested in doing a short story writing challenge for the month of December?

We would have the first two weeks to write, the last two weeks to vote and then announce the winner at the end of the month.

Word count would be anywhere from 1000 - 2000 words, possibly 3000 depending on how many people are willing to do it.

We could vote on a common theme to use throughout each story, or a character that had to be included, items to include, use song lyrics as inspiration, use a holiday as inspiration, supernaturally themed or not.

This is all up for discussion and consensus.

So if you want to do it let me know by posting in here and then let me know any ideas you have, questions, comments, etc, etc.

The deadline for getting it all sorted will be November 30th, and then we can start writing on Dec. 1st to the 15th, submit them annonymously to me, then I will post them all in a voting pole, we'd have from Dec. 16th to Dec. 30th to vote, and I would announce the winner on Dec. 31st, along with a list of who write what.

Winners will get a signature banner that they can use and every participant will get an icon/avatar/pip to use as well.

So what do you think? Who's in?

So what would the theme be?

Christmas/Yule/New Years are always classic ones.

We could pick a favorite Winter themed poem and use it as inspiration for a short story.

Or we can come up with a specific scenario that we have to adhere to.

Like...

Doria was a single mom with a secret that would be revealed under the Christmas tree.

Or...

Mikael was going to propose to his girlfriend on Christmas eve but someone from his past came back to stop it from happening.

Things like that.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Hmm like those ideas or how about using a picture and write a story from it? There are certain places you could get stock photos that are ok to post....

I would be interested, but I have to admit, I would want to see the guidelines etc first. I'm a sucker for a story, but there are just somethings I draw a blank with.

Akeyla. I'd love to participate, but I've giving myself a bit of a rest, after Nanowrimo. Although I do like the "We could pick a favorite Winter themed poem and use it as inspiration for a short story" idea....

how about using a picture and write a story from it?

This idea is a good one. If anyone wants to post some links or thumbnails of pictures that they think are good inspiration or have the possibility of a story around them, please do.

I'll see what I can find although I like the winter theme. Not necessarily Christmas with the Ho!Ho!Ho! but just winter.

Genre isn't an issue with me but I found that a lot of those pictures already had a set story behind them so didn't inspire me to write more.

Some of these might work better as there is something left to the imagination for us to build upon in our writing.

Just click on any of them for a bigger picture.

I'll be in. I had to pull out of Nano because of severe writer's block (I got to 45,621 and then my muse departed) and my laptop deciding to die. :(
Maybe this may help me get over the block...

I'd like to be able to start the writing portion on December 9th. Giving us two weeks to write. Then submit to me via email by December 23rd. We would then have two weeks following that to read them and vote.

Would you all be ok in me saying what the theme will be and all that or would you like some say in it, if so please submit some ideas that we can discuss and all agree upon.

Thanks

I think a group of images that we could all chose from would be a good idea. I like the group of pictures you posted.

The point is to all write about something similar and see how many different story ideas we can get out of a topic and then pick our favorite one.

So we can use the five pictures that I posted above but we would all have to agree or majority agree on which one to use, and then we would all write based on that singular picture.

If that works for you then please just indicate which picture you like, ie - picture one for the top one and then down to picture 5 for the bottom one.

Thanks and I'm looking forward to getting started on Saturday!

Are we still doing this? Because I like any of the first three. :)

What about everyone else?

Ok so how about we do this. Pick one of the following pictures and write about it.

We'll have until December 22nd to submit them to me at luna_di_anima@yahoo.ca .

Make sure to let me know which picture you wrote about.

After they are all in and it's time to post them to vote for our favorite we can do one of two things.

1 - I can post the picture along with the story.

2 - We can play a guessing game of who wrote about which picture. Just for extra fun.

We have until the 22nd to figure this out, feedback is welcome and important in this.

Thanks and Start writing.

Remember to keep the word count under 2000 words.

Here are the pictures again. Just click for a larger picture.

Ooh, sounds good, Akeyla. Under 2k? That's doable. :) And obviously PG-ish, yeah? I can manage that. Fluffy slash. Fluffy Christmas slash. :D *gathers all the plotbunnies back into their cage to stop them escaping*

I like the guessing game idea. Though I think it'll be obvious which one I wrote about given my ideas, though you never know.

We'll see what I come up with.

*runs off to start writing*

How are we all doing with this?

I haven't started yet but hope to have it done tomorrow night.

I started. Haven't got further than that, but I started. :D

I must get it finished. And hope that it won't suck.

Whee! Done!

Just over 1500 words. :D

Part one of a possible more than one part story. We didn't have to be that descriptive of the picture we used, did we? Because I sort of refenced it, it's very subtle. Hope that's alright. I suppose it just makes it harder to gues swhich picture I used.

Oh, and it's in second person. Yay. :D

My femslash lately has consistently spoken to me in second person. I don't know why. It's very very weird to have a fic writing itself in your head in second person because you have to work out who's head you're in. >.<

ETA: Mind if I go ahead and post it to my fic journal now? If I don't mention which picture I used? Otherwise I'll email it tomorrow or something.

It's your story Argento, you can post it wherever you'd like. I look forward to reading it.

I'm still working on mine and will hopefully have it done by Friday.

Good luck to all those who are participating and it's never too late to jump in and get some writing practice done.

Emailed, Akeyla. :) Enjoy it, though I'm not completely happy with it. It seems to be telling me not to even think about editing it though, so yeah.

Fun. >.<

I'm extending the deadline to the end of the month, so December 31st, for anyone else who would like to give it a try. It is a great way to jump start the creative flow for the new year.

Send them in to me at luna_di_anima (AT) yahoo (DOT) ca and then I will get them posted, most likely on the second of January as I have to work on New Years Day.

I look forward to reading them.

Anyone else going to do this?

So far I've only got two stories.

Come on, it's great practice and fun too. Anyone else going to submit one?

You can use any of the pictures in the last few pages as inspiration, we're going to guess which story goes with which picture.
