Does anyone know of any way to repell spiders?
I am extremely phobic about spiders and tend to run and panic when I see them. Unfortunately, I love to garden and live in a province where spiders are huge, and everywhere it seems....so it takes me an hour to dig a flower bed, because I have to keep running away from the spiders.

Anyway..... is there anything I can do, or do I just have to suffer?

:D You could look into getting yourself some
Praying Mantis's. They will keep spiders down, as
well as other pesky bugs.

That's a good tip, but..... I don't want to put more bugs out there. :) I dont' like bugs. I can put up with them though, except for spiders, but I won't purposely put them there.

So.... are there any options besides using other insects?

You could get some stick-um paper, which will hold
the spiders, and then you dispose of. :D

I too am extremely phobic when it comes to spiders.

I have never found anything that really works on spiders. However, they are good for the garden as they tend to rid you of various other pests.

As for the Mantis, remember that old tail of the town that had the mouse infestasion? They got some cats to kill the mice. Then they had to get some dogs to chase out the cats. The lions to chase out the dogs. Elephants to chase the Lions and, ultimately Mice to chase out the Elephants.

When you see the spider, just say "Shoo!".

Sorry, that's the best I can do.

My problem is this: I'm mostly okay with spiders if I see one just sitting there. I'll back up and give it it's space, but I don't get all panicky and run away. HOWEVER. The majority of spiders, for some reason, run right towards me. And that's what I can't stand.... that gets me all panicky and shaky, and hypervenilating.

I've been told that that's probably a sign and the spider has something to teach me.... but..... uhg....it gives me shivers just thinking about it. That's one lesson I won't learn in this lifetime.

Maybe it just feels your love and wants run up and say, "Thank you for your warmth and love - thank you for this garden". :D

Really, though, I would likely make doo-doo if a spider came at me. I feel for you.

You may want to try an indoor greenhouse. Although myself, I prefer outdoor gardening, spiders, snakes and all the other critters out there give me pause. Or the all-popular mosquito! *Blah* You might want to carry a rolled up newspaper and wack at the spiders with it. I don't mean kill them, just give them pause for thought so they'll run the other way.

Ok a natural way to get rid of insects from an outdoor garden is to plant Clary-Sage it repels most including spiders insects.

Can I use it dried and sprinkle it around the inside of my house too, to keep the spiders out?

When I'm in the garden, I wear gloves. I too, am afraid of spiders and other creepy crawlers. But I do love to work in the garden. So I got these gloves, now i don't freak out as bad if something crawls on me.

Want to know what I really hate? Those big green worm things with a howm in the middle of the head. The kind you find on Tomato plants. Those things spook me out terribly.

I am not the only one who don't like spiders? Whew! They give me the creepies! I have berry bushes and often get the big black and yellow ones (I don't know the name of them but they're monsters). I have lost many a bowl of berries because of them. I don't know how to get rid of them, but know I don't care for them.

I don't know about anybody else but there is one thing I find worse than spiders and it's June bugs. I'm not sure exactly what areas they are common to, but I do know they come to Vermont every year. They make a clicky noise and are sticky and huge! They are also attracted to the light, so I won't let my kids have the porch light on when they're around. I almost wrecked my car last year because one was in the car with me. They hurt when you run into one on a motorcycle, so I won't ride my bike when they're around either. They make spiders seem okay.

My home town was in the middle of a migration path for june bugs. They don't bother me too much, they're just pretty gross and icky. My friends used to find it fun to run over them on their bikes and make them go "CRUNCH". I also had a friend find one by a lake that was as big as her foot.....ewwww.....

I think they are just the worst. Probably because I got one stuck in my hair when I was a kid. Ever since then even the thought of them makes me shiver. Grossssssss

I have never tried that but it sure can't hurt--it might just work the dried herb being sprinkled

I took my dad to the PX at El Toro Marine base - now closed. We were in the Jeep. Caterpillars were on the move and it sounded like I was driving through snow.

That's when having chickens come in handy. When I was small, we would have a HUGE garden (I'm the youngest of six-a lot of mouths to feed). It was the kids responsibility to pick those worms off the tomato plants (I believe mom called them cut-worms) and feed them to the chickens who would gather on the outside of the garden eagerly awaiting their snack.

ME TOO!!!

Is that what it means when they chase you? I can be anywhere in the house, walking through the hallway (it drops down right in front of me!), I get my coffee cup in the morning (its on the F$@%^ing handle), just watching tv and this huge (I'm getting the heebee geebies, just telling you) flippin' spider is cruising down my leg!!!!!!!! (No I did not sleep at all that night!):smash:

I would like to know what they teach cause I'm a landscaper and its really embarrassing when you scream in front of your clients kitchen window because of a spider and they come out and pick it up in their hands (EEEWWWW!!) to move it.

I hope its not because we're Canadian!!??

Please feel free to share any solutions you may find...

I would love to know this one too....

I KNOW spiders are good for my garden but I would prefer if they're not around the same time I am. One thing I do before I start gardening is that I take a long stick & shake the leaves of the plants before I start working on them. Kinda gives advance warning to those buggies. I also wear surgical gloves too...a bit hot in the summer thought. I hate spider webs as much as I hate spiders. I'm always swinging my stick around branches & in the air to clear out any webs before I would go in that area. I'm sure my neighbours wonder about my sanity. :)

First of all..... I don't know what I would do if a spider ever crawled on me..... I'd probably start screaming and crying....
There was once when I was in the bathroom that a spider ran right past me, about 1cm from my bare foot.... I screamed so loud that my husband thought I had cut my leg off or something....

Anyway....

In my online research (which was very hard to do, cuz just looking at the pictures of them creeped me out), I've learned that there are a few things to keep spiders out of your house....

1. keep all clutter off of the floor, especially clothing. House spiders (the small spiders), like to sit in warm, dark, dry places that aren't disturbed.

2. have good screens, etc. around all the entry ways/windows of your house so outdoor spiders (the @#$!% huge ones), can't get in. Although, they wll find away, especially when it's raining.... that why you......

3. get a professional to spray insecticide in any crawl spaces under your house, or in your roof, and make sure there is no clutter (i.e. wood piles) around your house.

4. (my own contribution) keep a bottle of RAID on hand at all times. :D

Ugh...spiders and bugs really gross me out!!!

I used to have an intense phobia of spiders, I have since lightened up A LITTLE, I no longer hyperventilate but I still will freak out if I see one.

Slugs and earwigs really freak me out as well. And those d*mn little earwigs are really hard to kill!!!

There are few bugs that give me pause, including spiders, but it seems to me that if you don't like spiders gardening is a strange hobby to pick ;)

I never thought a bug would give me the creeps, but when I moved to America (Alabama) and came into contact with cockroaches for the first time ever, THAT creeped me out. There is something about those things...

The only bug which will "attack" (for want of a better word) me are what my hubby calls "assassin bugs". *shudder* Oh, them and the cursed ladybugs all over the place.

My husband has a problem with wasps. They are attracted to him, I have literally see them change course and make a bee-line (no pun intended :D ) for him from metres away! Whereas with me, I can walk within a foot of them and they don't even bother me. If they are headed for me they will usually veer off. It's really quite funny! hehe

But anyway, I completely understand the whole "attraction" thing where they are coming for you. Unfortunately I have no idea what it could mean, or what you can do about it.

If you're interested I can post some info on spiders from my Medicine Cards?

Oooo.... absolutely, that'd be wonderful! :D I've actually been looking for a good animal totem book to see what they have to say about spiders, but I haven't come up with anything....
Post away :)

Does he wear aftershave or cologne, etc? Wasps,
Bees, and Mosquitos are attracted to it...as well as
deodorants or other scented stuff.
I have no problem with spiders, but I always watch for
the Brown Recluse Spider. Nasty
Snakes and scorpions....when I lived in Arizona and area, I always had to shake out my clothes and shoes,
check under my sheets before getting into bed, and
other precautions. uuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!
