View Full Version : Strange Cat Behavior!

My youngest cat, Millie, has this thing about slick white surfaces, tubs, sinks, cabinets, countertops, etc. She will stare at it and then start "digging" like crazy and then stare at it some more. I have had many cats (I never just have one at a time!) and she is the first and only one to exhibit this behavior ... not even the refrigerator is safe. It is the same no matter where we live and she has been in three separate places with me. If it's white and slick she seems compelled to dig at it. My other cats will just sit and watch her do this like she is some kind of nut, I guess they may find it amusing, I dunno.

Is she one of the poster children for weird? :D :bigredgri

:D Yes, Millie is definitely a weird cat.

Our cats, mother & son, try to bury their food regularly,
even though its their regular diet, and they like the
food they get. Do any of your cats do this?
They also scratch at our bedroom window early in the
morning to get us up to open the front door. It drives
us crazy!
They both jump into the tub after a shower/bath and
roll around getting wet.

How's that for weird?

I have a siamese cat that doesn't yowl, is friendly to everyone, and likes to sleep on my belly if I'm relaxing in the tub! She also likes to be bathed and tried to have her kittens on my back then when I objected to that in my lap. She finally settled on my closet and handing me the kittens as she cleaned them and one before she cleaned him because she didn't have time. Wierd behavior for a cat!

My kitty likes to dig at smooth surfaces as well but she is not concerned about the color - Refrigerator, walls, glass. She also likes to pounce the vertical blinds.

When I am in the shower, she likes to lay on the edge of the tub between the outer curtain and the inner lining (which is clear) and watch the water. She also likes to drink water from any faucet in the house. After my shower she gets into the tub and shakes her paws as if in suprise that there would be water there - everytime!

She finally caught her tail and had nothing to chase anymore until she discovered "Shadows".

My female cat, Gizmo, is psycho!!! :p She was born to a neglected cat and lived on the streets for a couple of weeks. She is still so finicky over who gets to pet her at what time. During the day, she is nowhere to be seen. At night, she sleeps by my side. Other than that, it's up to her mood. She is slowly learning that it's ok to be loved and to let her big people know that she likes it!

Nope, gotcha on that one ... dogs descended from wolves who descended from cats. It's amazing the kind of things you learn in Physical Anthro. But then all things considered that theory might be obsolete the next time someone turns a spade of dirt on a Paleo-Zoology project! :) :D

I worked at the Blackwater Draw Locality No 1 Site and at the Blackwater Draw Museum as a Grad Assistant. It was great. I also had to stop my MA program short due to illness (what I have now). Anthro and Archaeology are like a sickness that you don't want to be cured of, it gets right into your blood.

Tonight I was eating a sandwich made with Turkey Ham and Turkey Pastrami (cuz I'm not supposed to have real ham & pastrami :( ) ... anyway I had been tearing off little bits of the turkey ham and giving it to her and then I must have torn off a bit of the turkey pastrami, she started to chew it, then let it fall out of her mouth and gave me the DIRTIEST look. Like I had tried to do something horrible!

Having three cats in the house can be endlessly entertaining, when they aren't all sleeping that is.

My kitty likes to climb up into my lap and sleep. She puts her butt on my stomach and let's her head drop lower in my lap. This puts her in a position where she is almost completely upside down.

Given this, the new nickname came to me tonight:

Upside Down Kitty Cakes.

Kind of silly but, sheseems to like it fine.

laser pointer, yep, i tried out a laser sighter a while back and decided it was more than i wanted on a duty pistol i'd be carrying all day long but our cat "diva" loves it, she'll chase that red dot all over the house. she ignores the "flashlight mouse" though, just looks at me with that "cat look"

We had to get rid of the laser pointer. My 4 year old kept getting the cats to attack certain body parts on his older brothers. It was buy them cups or take the pointer away. The cats and the youngest are still upset over that but the older 2 boys are happy that they don't have to use peroxcide on thier important parts. lol Besides it's embarassing to have your Mom talking to her friends and have to tell her that you have a scratch there.

i sort of think that an interest in anthropology and archeology goes with the territory in pagans. we are following beliefs that may be "new" in our time but do have roots deep in history as witness the mummified priestess that was found in siberia recently who is thought to be circa 2,500 years old. we don't know perhaps what rituals she practised but i'd bet that wiccans/pagans would be comfortable with her could she speak to tell us.

we used to have a Blackie who liked to box with himself in the mirrored closet doors. we always knew when he was playing because it made noise. he was one of mama lion-kitty's (Lioness's), and one of her favorite things to do is sit on the back of the couch with one arm stuck out to snag passers-by for pets. love my silly kitties.

My Gizmo doesn't chase laser pointers or the "light mouse", she goes after her tail! :D It's great watching her. She'll catch it, let it slip away again, and attack again when it starts to twitch. Once she got so involved in chasing her tail that she chased herself right off the edge of the bed. :p She's great.

When Bear was really into chasing her tail, she would do so in the bath tub. I would be sitting in the livingroom and would hear this thump-thump-thump-BAM as she bounced off the side of the tub. I would nearly die of hysterics just listening to it. :D

I have 3 cats, recently depicted on the witchvox page! :D

The youngest loves water! She will come right into the shower with you and drentch herself...also, i have this 8/12 photograph of alaska and she stares into it....and moves her head to try to see beyond the mountians in the pic...

ITs damn erie!

Jordan (who went in for surgery yesterday) has a "baby" ... the baby is a littel purple soft ball that she bats around and carries around in her mouth, while meowing through it...

does anyone know why she is doing this? she is 12

Becaureful with lasar pointers as they can cause damage to kitties eyes

The flashlight game can't happen in my house becuase Nero (the gray one) goes absolutly insane...he gets really freaked out and paranoid becuase he can't catch the light and that attitude lasts for about 3 days after we play with it... He just can't handle it!

My male cat, Bear, has his oddity too. He's perfectly fine with the vaccum. He normally just gives it a curious look and goes back to sleep. My dad just bought a vaccum sized steam cleaner for the carpet. When he took it out of the box, Bear flipped out!!! We didn't even turn it on. He was hissing and spitting like crazy. When my dad tried to get the cat used to the cleaner by brining him closer, Bear came running to me and sat in my lap trembling for the rest of the day. We have to put him out side before we use it now. I feel so bad for him.

I have 2 cats, Kelly and Sushi. Kelly has chronic bronchitis and sounds like Darth Vader most of the time (she lives fine, just coughs up nasty stuff a lot). She is the gentlest cat I've ever had, has never bitten anyone hard, and even lets me clip her claws when they get too long, but our dog Santana, who is pretty big, is so scared of her that when she sat in front of the dog in the basement steps, Santana sat a few feet down and whimpered til my mom moved the cat. She may be old, but she still rules the house.
Sushi likes to sleep on his back with all four feet in the air, jumping in the tub after people have showered, and hopping on the sink when I'm brushing my teeth before bed.

Laser pointer! LOL! Remote control cat! My familiar, Collar (named so for the white collar of fur around his neck) will chase the stupid thing everywhere! Under couches, up walls, INTO walls (he has learned about BRAKES yet), THROUGH walls (don't worry, the hole was already there), round and round in circles until he falls over, eyes going helter-skelter....you name it! He also has this thing about crawling into bed with my youngest son, Chris...it's hilarious when they both conk out...they snore in harmony! Don't EVER leave the bathroom door open when you're "doing the deed"...he'll decide he wants to be loved and hop up on your lap, poopy smell and all! That and he likes skating in the bathtub after someone has taken a shower or bath (and if my daughter's bathing, you can be sure that if the cat comes around, he's going to join her whether he wants to or not!!!!

When - as so eliquently put - "doing the deed", I just toss Bear one single sheet of TP and she stays out of my lap. In fact, she'll be in there for hours tearing it apart. When she done, I just sweep. No fuss, no muss.

For her anyway.

This is such a cruel thing to post. Especially since it caused my cat such embarrassment!!!!
I have one cat, named Sassy, she's a beautiful cat and a demon-child to boot! She makes the perfect guard cat. Bites the nice Mormon boys ankles when they come over, attacks my mother-in-law, gets the deer-in-the-headlights look when my nieces and nephews come over lol
Tonight she was enjoying her late-night race through the apartment which drives me crazy. Mainly because I've almost been decapitated several times.
I shut the window in the computer room since it's getting a bit cool in here. Then I sat back in my chair and kept reading posts when suddenly there was a loud *thwack* from behind me and almost sent me flying out of my chair.
Poor Sassy had came flying into the room and tried to leap onto the window sill and came in contact with the glass instead!
After I realized what had happened and had dissolved into completely helpless laughter she decided to lay down for a while and nurse her bruised body and pride and glare at me.
~still laughing~

I have three cats. Two are brothers. They are going to be 5 years old next month. The other, who is also a boy, will be two in June. The brothers are both madly in love with me, one of them molests me in my sleep. He forces me to endure hours of kneading and tongue kisses - I've tried desperately to fight him off, but he waits for me to fall asleep before he attacks, and if I put my face into the pillow, he forces his little head in and it doesn't stop him. It's only slightly more pleasureable than rubbing sandpaper on my lips until all of the skin is torn off.
His brother is very kind, affectionate, gentle and considerate. I often wish I could meet a human man with his qualities. I believe him to be my sould mate.
My little one is hell on paws. He gets in the refrigerator everytime you open the door. Sometimes he hides behind the milk and juice making it hard to get him out. I've been wallpapering, and he manages to scratch up the new areas almost immediately. He is quite the little hoodlem, but sweet. I don't look at any of them as pets, but as my friends. They are all so smart.

Hey, I have 3 furry couch dwellers too! Don't ya just love the way they stick their butt in your face to say HI! Well mine do anyway, I know its an identification thing, but really!!??

They all like the laser pointer, but one in particular is actually trained now, when I call her name in a certain voice, she knows, its "pointer" time and will come a runnin'...now thats entertainment, for us I mean, LOL!

Weird quirks...pick at the mat to be let out, pick the screen door to come in (on some nights I'm a human yo-yo with 3 of them!!!!), At 9pm, the oldest comes to get me - it IS treat time, EVERY single night, its almost eerie?

My male cat does that scratching thing to, but only on the kitchen floor? I don't like it, I always think, he's getting ready to take a big, steamy one, ya know?

Blah, blah, blah,....the stories are endless, I love em to bits...

Stanley, my cat, does some interesting things I believe he thinks he's a dograbbit eheh. Stanley runs to the door if anyone says "wanna go outside" or if no one is saying that he yells at everyone "meeeooooowww" to let him out. After he gets outside he eats grass which makes him sick? I tell him all the time "dont eat the grass" but you know kids...He eats dog food too and perfers to use the yard as his litterbox. Stanley sleeps in the washroom, behind the bigscreen tele, on the bathroom floor (unless water is running, he hates to take a bath), on my pillow, or on the table. Well thats my cat who also talks back anything you say to him he has something to say back.

My mom has a cat named Karyn who she refers to as a fur person. Karyn really digs young, handsome, manly repair guys. She flaunts in front of them, doesn't let them out of her sight, and when they go to pet her, she licks them seductively from hand to elbow. She is a beautiful torti Persian, and she knows how gorgeous she is. Once I was staying with my mom in LA, and I had been cleaning out the bottom of my closet. She came into the room and upon me saying "Hi" to her, she responded a very clear "Hello." She also reminds my mother that it is time to feed the outside strays, and has rescued a suicidal fish twice from jumping out of the tank (poor guy was successful on his 3rd attempt, when my mom wasn't home to put him back). Karyn was very upset by the loss.
On the supernatural side, both my mother and I were visited by her long passed cat, Veronica. One night I felt a cat paw on my arm and when I looked down there was no cat there, just an indentation on my skin where I felt the paw. - Each contact was preceeded by feeling the cat jump up on the bed - Later the appearance of Veronica would then signal a visit from my Great Great Grandmother - whom neither me nor my mother ever met.

It's funny you should mention that. I have always felt another cat presence here ever since I moved in. Sometimes when laying inbed, I fell a cat jump onto the bed, I have even felt it walking over my legs or across the pillow. Of course I think it's Bear but when I look, nothing.

Spirit cats are even pickier than their living relatives. This cat (or cats) must really like and trust you - especially if it came with the house and wasn't one of your own cats. My mom recently moved out of the apartment that Veronica died in. I wonder if Veronica will appear to the new tenants?

Veronica never knew me - except as a fetus. My mom put me up for adoption immediatly after birth. She tells me that Veronica used to sit on her stomach and listen to her belly when she was pregnant with me.

My favorite cat that I've ever had, Dusty, didn't come home about a year ago. Dusty wouldn't stay out of the house for more than a week, so we knew that he had passed away after a couple of weeks ahd gone by. My Dad and Dusty were VERY close and when Dusty disappeared, it was one of the few times I have ever seen my dad cry. After about a month Dad had a dream with Dusty in it. Dusty was happy in the dream and offered my dad a mouse in the dream, but Dad couldn't bring him home no matter how hard he tried. Dad woke crying, but knowing that Dusty had died naturally and even though he couldn't come home was happy where he was at. Every now and then I'll see his shadow behind the curtain or I can here him purring when I wake up from a bad dream. Every time I call to him, but of course he's never there. *crying* I miss him.

And I do feel very honored. My Spiritual Father who passed las September, spoke highly of cats. I often wonder if it is he who has sent this gift. Meditation has not revealed to me the answer to this question.

It's funny you should mention that. I have always felt another cat presence here ever since I moved in. Sometimes when laying inbed, I fell a cat jump onto the bed, I have even felt it walking over my legs or across the pillow. Of course I think it's Bear but when I look, nothing.

The apt. I am in now used to belong to Kelly, and she
had a beautiful gray & white cat, which was taken to
the SPCA by the bldg staff after Kelly's passing, and the
cat was euthanized. I feel a cat walking on the bed,
but I never see it. I think the cat has returned to the apt, and stays with my cat and me. My cat also stares at
something in the apt, so I think he can see the spirit cat.

Only my cat understands me. :D

My mom's cats saw her spirit kitty, too. I think they are more aware than we are. As I type, one of my cats is rearranging the artwork on my walls. I guess he likes things more askew. Anyway, a friend of my mother and I, Jayne, has a spirit in her home. It preffers the dining room. Her cats regularly go into that room to "talk" to the spirit.

Well, even though I didn't build a good survey, I found it interesting that no one said they were in charge. I'm glad we were all in agreement on that one. It may have been necessary to send some poor soul to a shrink for delusionary behavior. ;)

Blue :D

Sorry, I have a unique (so far as I've seen) relationship with my kitties. I'm momma/alpha/high-queen-$h|+ kitty in my house. I teach them the rules mommy style. We rub faces together (I even instigate it sometimes). I've found they behave better if you treat them as equals (sort of).

Cattily,

Treat cats as our equals?
They never forget to let us know they are our superiors.

My cat has a new method of getting me up in the
morning. He sits on my chest, and starts pawing
the blankets to get them off me, so I will get up
and feed him his breakfast. :D

If you want the best seat in the house, you will have
to move the cat.
