We live in a rustic cabin, its old but I don't know how old it is. It has a huge stone fireplace. Now I have 2 candles on the mantle and since we moved in..one candle will keep falling out of the holder. It started popping out and hitting my husband a few times as he sat on the couch. Then we would find it missing ..and we would look for it..and find it..later lying out in the open..where we had both searched..and it was not there. Last night my husband poured out our coffee..put the cups on the coffee table and then turned around to get something and when he came back the candle was balanced on the arm of the couch. We have replaced this candle in the holder..even melting the wax on the bottom to secure it. It still comes out...the other candle on the mantle never moves. I also see something in the corner of my eye sometimes in that spot..but when I turn my head,,there is nothing there.

Now, a few months ago my husband was gettin the coffee ready for the next morning..and he could not find the coffee filters..we always keep them on the shelf over the kitchen counter. He called me in the kitchen to help look for them..we have two teenage boys..so we thought maybe one of them had moved them..we both searched..we took things off the shelf..even though..there was no way a whole package of coffee filters..could hide on the shelf without being seen. I decided the boys must have moved them..it was late and they were in bed..so I said..forget looking..we'll ask them in the morning. I went back into the bedroom. I hear him yell "Oh shit!" The next thing I know..my 6'2 husband runs into the bedroom..shuts the door locks it and says the coffee filters are back. He says..I'm not going out there..I ask him to tell me what happened..he said when I left the kitchen he turned around and there were the coffee filters..perched on the very edge of the shelf. We went back out in the kitchen together and he showed me the package and just where it was balanced..the other weird thing is that it was a new package unsealed..the ones we were looking for were opened.

Another weird thing that happened was with a bag of potatoes. My husband about a month ago was going to make some Chips..he brings out the bag from the pantry and showed me the bag..the bag was closed in a kind of twisted way..He said that the other day there was a half of a bag left and now..there was only like four in the bag...I said that I had not used any potatoes...my boys could not cook a potato if their lives depended on it..too much work lol. I shrugged and said perhaps the Ghost ate them.

The next day he went to the store to buy another bag..when he came home to put the new bag away..the other bag was 1/2 full again. The boys were at school and iIwas at work when he went to the store.

I was wondering if what we have is Ghost or a poltergheist? I don't sense anything bad..more like playful..but I have heard that sometimes...it can start off like that and then end up being bad...we have been here almost 3 and 1/2 years now..these things that have happened are within the last year..except for the candle. We rent..and in fact will be moving in the spring..as the place is getting sold..:)

Sounds like someone, or something is playing tricks on you. Maybe it wants recognition as it could be feeling left out.

Maybe the "spirit" is saying to move the candle. If it falls from the holder onto your husband, do you not think that is a fire risk? but whatever is going on, you have something that seems paranormal.

Not a fire risk since we never light them..decorative only. The other thing too..no matter how many times that it gets tossed out of the holder..it never breaks. I have dropped candles myself..and have had them break...its very strange..but like i said..I have never felt any malice.

Maybe it is seeing it as a risk. Tell it that you only have them as decorations and nothing else. It could understand and stop.

You don't say how old your "cabin" is. Having travelled a bit in northern England (and a great deal more in Scotland), and knowing a bit about British history, obviously a building such as the one you're living in could be quite old (by North American comparison).

Do you know who lived in the cabin through the generations? Do you have any kind of record? How difficult or easy is it to obtain records? Have you looked into local history? Perhaps some history of the building would shed light on why you have the poltergeist-type occurrences. I'm just curious...

I would say you definitely DONT have a poltergeist :)

reasons are:

1. A poltergeist normally focusses its activity around one person in the household, usually a child.
2. A haunting is something that you 'move' into - ie, some activity is usually already there (in your case the candle has always moved since you brought it)
3. As a poltergeist focusses on one person, usually a child, you would have mentioned similar activity to this prior to moving into this house. As poltergeist can and will follow the person of their objective from place to place.
4. A hauting is 'usually' harmless, where things that move are insignificant and cause neither harm or panic.
5. A poltergeist on the other hand, will not just move things backwards and forwards. A poltergeist will make sure you know that the things are being thrown in your direction etc etc.
6. A haunting can occur without residents in the property. A poltergeist needs the fear from its objective to be able to do the things they do.
7. Poltergeist activity gets stronger and more violent over time. Whereas your activities are simply moving around the house, not causing any harm or getting more violent.

I would say that you have a harmless haunting. The fact that the candle has normally and always been the focus.....but that focus has moved slightly to other harmless things.........would suggest that, your 'ghost' after trying SO hard for a long time to get attention, finally began to shift other stuff, to see if the attention can be gotten that way.

Saying that..........opinions only can be given based on what you write in your post. From the information given, I sincerely doubt that you have a poltergeist.

sounds like a haunting to me... my last home had a ghost that would do similar things; move things around, knock things over and sometimes even fling a candle across the room from inside a holder.

one misconception is that a house has to be really, really, really old in order to have a haunting, and this is simply not so. our house was relatively new, but the original owner's (an old lady and her husband) both passed in the home, and stuck around to "greet" us.

My thought was that the older a house, the more occupants over time it would usually have had, the more likelihood that something of this nature might happen... wasn't saying it wouldn't happen in a newer house.

Thanks so much for your Replies!

As far as the actual age of the cabin..We were told it was built on the property as a hunting cabin..for wealthy out of state hunters..The cabin is completely built out of cedar trees that were on the property. Then the cabin and land was aquired by the present owner about 40 years ago..they built their main house across from it..and used the cabin as a guest/recreation place. The Estate has about 60 acres. The owner used this place as a summer residence only. She passed away ..hence it is now being sold. It is probably around 100 years old.

Back when this area was first settled..this was where a local indian tribe lived...but they abandoned the land due to an outbreak of a plague..most of them died..the indian name given to this place means "place of death". Thats what we have been able to find out.

Thanks for clearing up poltergeist vs haunting..I am not that familiar with the paranormal..this is my first experience. My husband, who is from England.. had one other paranormal experience while living in a Victoran house in England. It was a 3 story house..the bathroom was on the third floor..One day when the rest of his family was out..he decided to take a bath..when he came out of the bathroom..directly across from him..standing by the stairs..was a little girl in victorian dress staring at him..he said she was quite clear..he closed the door and stayed in the bathroom until..he heard his family return.

Blessing again for taking the time to reply!:)

this is an interesting story. "the place of death" thing is kind of scary! isn't it weird that it's food related stuff?
i just have to say that i am giggling thinking of your husband (even though i dont know him) saying "oh sh*t, the coffee filters are back"! i hope every once in a while you just look at him and say "honey look, the coffee filters are back"!
to be sure, i am only laughing cuz he reacted the same way my husband would.....and me too for that matter!
honestly, i am going to remember this everytime i make coffee!!!

as an offside did you know that in the state of new york if your house is haunted the realtor has to let potential buyers know? there are a few other states that have this law, but new york is the only one i can remember off hand.

weird, huh?

you also mentioned that the owner just passed away...would it be possible that perhaps this person's spirit might be the culprit.

yup, you're haunted. maybe, since Native Americans used to live there, it's one of their children who died of the plague you talked about. either that, or you've got....*scary music*

KITCHEN GNOMES.

they love caffeine and chips and will stop at nothing until your entire supply is gone. if you suspect a gnome infestation, you must do something immediately. (a cleansed, consecrated, and empowered kumquat should do the trick.)

:hehehe: :hehehe: :hehehe:

(i'm not making fun of you or anything...i just...um...didn't sleep last night...like...at ALL...)
