View Full Version : A thought and theory on Society

"There is no escape from society"

Let's take the "skaters" 10 years back or however far you want to go, skaters were not known as such. They were just people who skated alot and listened to punk/heavy metal. Society saw this and said "Holy crap, that clique is rebelling against me I must give them a label. Hence skater was born.

Society is everyone, every human being on the planet is a part of this integrated conscience that is accused of making labels and titles. It is very interesting, you can't escape from it... Because it's you.

Hope that made any sense hehehe:)

Oh no, 10 years ago skaters were skaters. Or punks. They're still punks too.

It is human nature to label and classify. Doesn't matter whether someone's rebelling or not, it's just human nature to go "ok you have the preps, the geeks, the jocks, the skaters, and the goths", etc.

That's just human.

What I find amusing is when people try to go on about how they're *outside* society's labels. Well, my friend, if you're outside the given labels, then you've just labelled yourself as outside the labels. You're the one trying to be the anarchists, or you're just the loners. And though loners may be fewer and further between (being loners, they aren't found in groups), as a whole they are still a group. And since it's popular now to go "oh I can't be labelled", you've effectively put yourself in that group of people who thinks they can't be labelled, labelling yourself as such.

Labels are also given by perspective - to some you might be a geek, to others a yuppy/prep, or to others a loner. *shrugs*

They're called subcultures - a society within a society.

*whips out label maker* Muwhahahahaha! I am unstoppable! *goes on crazy labeling spree*
Seriously that's crazy. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of that tho. I've just never said anything, I thought I was just being odd.
But at my school if you can fit in with the "Bah! I can wear black! It's not really a color. Be afraid, or the non-color will come and get you! Bah!" people then you can consider yourself above labeling.
But then you get to pretend that you're above everyone else and label the rest of us behind our backs and pretend that we're deeply offended. I'm sure it's very fun for them.
That and finding new ways to wear pentacles. They like that too. I think all the other Pagans are playing the"How many pentacles can I cram onto my neck" game but I wasn't invited because I'm just not cool enough to wear black and write bad poems yet. ;) Someday... I'll be cool like that.

What do you want to be labeled? It's like becoming an elf at Macy's (anyone else read "The Santa Land Dairies"?).

From Burkley's Dictionary of American Colloquialisms:
Goob: (shortened form of Goober)
Refers to someone who is not very intelligent or is slow to understand...from the character affectionately called "Goob" on The Andy Griffith Show

If you are not a Goob you're a Gomer.... :D

I've always thought there should be a magazine devoted to subcultures. Feature a different subculture in each issue. Thereby creating the "Fascinated By Subcultures" subculture......

Yes and I was a hippie once now I am middle class and conservative. Labels like people change and become irrelevant.

I went from a "heavy metal chick" to a "heavy metal/hippie chick" (given to me by a boyfriend) to a Hippe Mamma to my new favorite title, given to me by the Site God himself "Godsmack Chick" :D

Ah the times, they do change, but deep down, we're all just a bunch of Goobs.

once i was talking to a friend about what social label i fall under, and as i was trying to, i mentioned i might be called a gothic hippie. my friend said, "No, you are Your Own Person." i asked what that meant and she said that it meant that i just do whatever i think is cool, act how i want, dress however i want, listen to whatever music i like. i don't fit in to any social genre, apparently, because i am My Own Person.

Labels really make me want to scream. I'm really not a label--I don't dress a certain way, and people still label me as a goth. *headdesk* The most black I wear a day is usually a t-shirt...unless of course, it's a special ocassion. ^___^

Hmm, did I kill the thread? I was actually curious to hear people's thoughts on my last statement... :)

Or did I just make a blinding statement of the obvious that no one thought worthy of a reply...
