I am not looking for advice. Just curious. I am in my year and a day training. I have made a commitment to study and learn as much as possible before I begin to practice magick. I am very enthusiastic and anxious however I cant think of what I would DO with it outside of a few love spells and money spells. So I am curious what everyone else does with magick. Some of my books say to practice magick often to keep from getting rusty. To hone witch power.

Spells aren't something you throw around to "hone power". However, you will also learn that that's not the only form of magic. There's also ritual, divination, herbcraft, meditation, astral travel, prayers, and magical techniques such as visualization and cleansing etc. that are very magical.

Also, you have lots of time to use power. You really should learn before you try to gain more.

Ah I see. So Meditating and learning Astral counts? Well. I guess it was a matter of definition for me. I want to try scrying now maybe today is as good as any. Or should I stick to meditation and Astral for the time being?

See it depends on what you think magic is.

To me magic is affecting energy through intent and focus. You can try any of that if it feels right. I'd try meditation and divination first, just because they are both easier then astral travel (and the former is usually a part of astral travel).

You stated that you are in your "Year and A Day Training", is this something that you are imposing on yourself or do you actually have a teacher?

If you have a teacher you should talk to them about this issue as the answer might be specific to their teaching on how you should progress.

I imposed the year and a day on myself. I kept doing spells early in my studies and I got weak results that didn't last and the more I read the more I realized I have a long way to go. I mentioned in another post I just feel too clumsy and I am too anxious to possess all those tools that feel right to me now when I really am not sure why they feel that way yet. I guess when I said a year and day before I practice I was refering to spells. And for me it's not enough to call the quarters and know they are there. I want to feel them. I found a good online course that recommends learning to meditate and work on your chakras and learn astral before you move on to other stuff. For me this makes sense. And in the mean time I read all I can about magick, different views, techniques, styles, etc. I am reading about dieties and spirits and faeries and devas and such. I have respect for them but I want to be able to show them respect without bumbling and stumbling about like a child and that is what I feel like right now.

Unlike some, I use magic in most every aspect of my life, almost every day. Just be sure of exactly what you are trying to accomplish, & that you've considered every possible outcome.

Couldnt a simple thought be a form of magick?

Any thought? No. A thought with intent and focus? A thought that causes change or seeks to? Sure. :)

Those in business sometimes use positive thinking and combine it with visualization, with intent and focus. "I will be bright and intelligent, I will answer questions well, I will obtain the job if this is meant to be" before an interview, and oh wait a minute that's kind of magic! :D

Yes, yes, yes. In my self-imposed year and a day, I did a lot of reading and attending public rituals, workshops, etc. I had been doing metaphysical studies for approximately five years before finding my current path. The spells and rituals that I did were very successful and during that process I learned to focus my thoughts and project energy. I have a very busy life and do not have the luxury of having enough time to sit down and really do a spell or ritual very often. I use magick on a constant basis throughout my day - while doing yoga, in the shower, cleaning the house, driving, listening to music, etc. Working in my flowerbeds is powerful magick, as I focus on thoughts of planting seeds for future abundance and health as I work. Mundane tasks can become rituals in themselves, and the alpha state that I can put myself into while doing them is perfect for focusing thought and intent, which then becomes my magick. I am very aware of my thoughts. Like attracts like, and when I am thinking negative thoughts I immediately correct them by re-framing them into positive ones. Similarly, good feelings attract positive manifestation. I have learned that when I am feeling good, focusing on the positive feelings of success, prosperity and self-love tend to attract more of the same into my life. I take full advantage of this whenever it occurs.

Isnt that the power of positive thinking basically.........and when your spellcasting dont you have to have a great need for something before working a spell on it ............the more the need the more urgency projects through the spell?I try not to do spellcasting only if i have a great need ......otherwise i meditate . astral traveling, always keeping in my meditations the people who have directly influenced by 911 and send healing thoughts out to them and those over seas .......keeping the world in mind as well as our own needs .....Our planet needs all the help it can get at anytime we can give it......so make sure and keep others in mind to when doing any magic ......

Need, desire and emotion are indeed powerful fuel for magick. And when I have a real and urgent need, I will take the time to do a ritual, even if there's time for only my goddess representation and a candle on a simple altar.

You are correct to say that magick, intent and thought focusing are basically the power of positive thinking. Wayne Dyer and Louise L. Hay practice and teach magick under the guise of positive thinking - and to an extent, I owe a good deal of my skill to them since that was where I started. Louise's book, You Can Heal Your Life, was very powerful for me. So do evangelist Joyce Meyer and others, who use God's promises in the Bible as the foundation for their type of magick - but they wouldn't call it that since they believe that magick is "of the devil!" :eyebrow:
