View Full Version : What would be the ethical considerations of this...?

The background: I am a stay at home mom, not working at all and at the mercy of hubby's paycheck :D)
Hubby is up for a possible promotion and raise at this job. We really, really could use a little more income coming in. We prefer that I don't work for many reasons, one being that day care costs more than the average PreK teacher makes. Would it be unethical for me to do a money drawing/job promotion spell as the money technically belongs to him and it would be as a result of his job performance? Or since, on the other side of the coin, "his money is my money" and my job is staying home, would his salary be tied to me?
Just running the idea of a spell through my head, and I am not really sure of what the risks could be if I did the spell. It could end up tying him to a job he doesn't realy like, but would help us in the long run... and it would be manipulation of him, but for a result that would benefit the family as a whole...
So, I am looking for any input to give me some more to think about as well as any thoughts on what to be careful about so it wouldn't backfire on either of us. ;) In all honestly, I am not even sure i would want to do a spell at all, it is just a little bit of a thought. I'd like to say a spell couldn't hurt- but I know better!

if your purpose is to draw more money to the family, for the benefit of the entire family, then where's the harm?
Lavender

This is something that would require a lot more thought. You mentioned that the money would depend on his job performance. Wording the spell slightly off could mean that he will have to put in long, long hours. And possibly spend less time with the family.
You can work a prosperity spell that won't tie in his job. Maybe to ask that the family bills be less or at least, more affordable? Perhaps, find him a job that he will like better in the long run. I'll have to think about it some more too. :)

How about phrasing the spell to bring in money from any source? Harming none, of course, if that's part of your practice. This way if there's any "free-flowing money energy" around you can attract it to you, not focusing on any one particular source. You may find money coming from another source you hadn't considered before, that you might have shut yourself off from if you focus specifically on your husband's job. And if you have something you particularly have in mind that you need money for, you could focus on getting "just enough" to achieve that goal.

Personally, I do money drawing workings on a regular basis... most 'magical' folks I know do... the key is to do it 'regularly'... like every full & new moon... when I miss one, I can tell it... 8O

I would intend the spell to increase the prosperity of the entire family. This could be for more money coming in, less money going out, an unintended windfall like a bonus or simply discovering newer ways to save money.
I also agree with Rick. You need to work for this on a regular basis. Not only will different money saving techniques become more apparent to you but they will become habit. This will allow you to bring about the prosperity you need from within.

I agree also. I have kept a money growth jar for about a year and it actually grew into two jars. This is something that helps focus the intent on drawing money on a daily basis. Any money that I find or am gifted with goes into it, and I can either spend or give away the money as necessary. I've had some financial struggles this year, but money has always manifested when it's most needed.

just a simple little everyday thing that I've done for years (and it seems to help, too!) is when you pay cash for something and you're handing the money to someone, fold it in half (or just bend it in half, whatever) with the back facing outward and hand it to them with the open side facing you. That way, you don't allow your wealth to escape and you keep money returning to you. Its a little charm/superstition I picked up someplace, I just forget where, but it really seems to help to keep me from going entirely broke. It also isn't exactly what you were looking for, I know, but they mentioned something to do on a regular basis, and that was something I knew that works and I figured I'd mention it.

Yes! I've heard that, and also that the oldest money spell in the world is to write your name, or "Come back to me" on all of your bills. Or, you can anoint your money with money or power or clove oil. If you want the spell for that money jar, I'll look it up for you, I got it out of last year's Magickal Almanac.

So *that's* why I am always broke- I am not doing enough money spells!:rotfl:
Seriously, I would love to hear about the money jar. I am going to re-check out Cunnigham's natural spells books- I think I remember reading about something similar in one of those.
Thanks for the input. I want to be careful- hubby works for his dad and with his younger brother (lots of sibling rivalry here, novels worth, ugh) so if it backfired, it could have the potential of getting really ugly. A simpler prosperity spell sounds like a safer deal.

I really admire the way you thought out all of the possible consequences. I'll get back to you with the spell as soon as I've got time to hunt for the book!
This is not the same one, but it's cute. The site doesn't cite that it's from Silver Ravenwolf:

Thanks Freyja. :) That spell was cute. But if you could find your spell I would like to check that one out too.
I couldn't find a money Jar spell in the Cunningham books- but I found a money charm. A dollar bill wrapped around a lodestone with green yarn. I have to get a lodestone though. Would hematite work? Or maybe bloodstone (thinking green on that one). I have those.

8O I'd forgotten, thanks for reminding me......There can be many variations on this and I've included my own. A lodestone would be perfect because they are magnetic, but I'm sure you could substitute any money-drawing stone; snowflake obsidian, citrine, aventurine, pyrite, etc.
This is from Llewellyn's 2001 Magickal Almanac, the author is Cerridwen Iris Shea, she calls it the Money Growth Box:
She recommends any box made out of a natural material such as pottery, leather, wood, stone, etc. Mine is actually a pretty tin that I got as a gift because I read somewhere else that you can also use something that is reflective on the inside, but not on the outside.
Start your box at New Moon. Add a bit of cat hair in the bottom for luck. You could add herbs that draw money for you, I like cloves because it makes your money smell great! I also add my favorite stones. Light a few green candles anointed with patchouli oil. Use whichever correspondences work well for you. On top of whatever you put in the bottom, add one dollar. Then shut the box and leave it alone.
Each night for 3 full moon cycles, put one dollar into the box, saying "Money grows from Money, and Money Grows Here." That's all! Just one buck. If you're so short that you don't even have that, just add whatever change you do have. Don't count the money that's accumulating. Just add the money, speak the affirmation and close the box.
Ms. Shea recommends removing the money on the third Full Moon, counting it, giving thanks and giving half to charity and blowing the rest on yourself! But others recommend just feeling free to spend the money on something you need.
I find that this helps me focus my intent on prosperity. I put most of my spare change into the box and any gift money that comes my way, even if it's just a penny. I've also heard that when you find money on the floor at your house, you should give thanks and say "Money on the floor, Money at the door!" I have had lots of financial concerns this past year, but money has come to me without fail just when I've needed it most.
I've filled up TWO jars, and need to spend the money to make room for more! I'm afraid to have the bank count all the change for me 'cause I don't trust 'em, isn't that terrible? :D I also thank the deities every time I find money, saying "Thank you for this symbol of abundance."
Hope you enjoy this spell and I know that it will work for you.:)

Here's three little practices that I do as part of an ongoing abundance working. The theory is that you are trying to convince the universe that you are ready for abundance. But in order to do that, you must accept whatever is given to you. Sometimes accepting it is the hardest part.
1. If someone gives you something, even if you don't need it, accept it. If someone gives you a truly awful tie, you say "thank you" and accept it and try to find something to do with it or someone else to give it to later.
2. If someone offers to give you money for something, accept it! Like if they offer to give you money for a tarot reading, or gas money if you drive them somewhere -- how many of us have said, no I'll do it for free because you're a friend ....
3. If you find money or something of value, even just a penny on the street, pick it up! I've put a little cauldron on my altar, and my DH and I put all found money, and the monetary value of found objects, into the cauldron. We're going to see how much money we have -- how much money other people threw away and we could have walked past -- at the end of the year. When we started this, DH and I would find individual pennies lying around. Now we're finding pennies in groups, plus dimes and quarters! Plus someone left a bag with three bottles of water, each of which would have cost about a dollar, on a train where I found them. So $3 goes into the cauldron ... The guy at the deli gives me 15 cents extra in change ... it goes into the cauldron. Money found in the washing machine or extra change given by the vending machines go in the cauldron (and check the change slots on vending machines and payphones!) I found some really nice buttons on the ground -- those went into the cauldron, and I'll find something to do with them some day .... I'm going to find a lodestone and a calcite and a piece of green jade and put those in the cauldron too, and then we should really see something!
The idea is that you need to convince yourself that you will accept what is given you, you are worthy of getting it, and you won't ignore or bypass what is there for the taking, what other people have lost or given away or wasted.

Update on the cauldron thing ... we have over $80 just in paper money in there now - money people gave us for driving them places, the approximate garage sale value of the table we found on the side of the road, etc. - and probably another $30-40 in assorted change.
The more we have found, the more we seem to find.

And an update on the Money Growth Jar - I've had just enough work flood in to cover the bills right when I needed it, have received an unexpected check and found two checks that I forgot to deposit.
I need to figure out how to turn this concept into a Job Jar :T

I love the idea with the Money Jar, but where in the world can I get cat's hair? Would dog's hair be enough instead? Cause there's sure a lot of it in my house;) .

If you want some cat's hair, I can mail you a big clump! A black cat at that, they're the most magickal kind! (or check at a pet store or grooming service, they'll probably let you have a pinch of cat combings ....)

Well, I have a black dog, but if my doggie's hair is not enough, I'll have to ask some friends to give me some of their cat's hair. I wonder if they'll be surprised at my request;) .

And Flar and I have six cats......you have your choice of gray, black, white, orange or siamese tan :T
Again, it's the intent that's important. Use whatever is available. BTW, I didn't add any cat hair to the second jar I started although as you can see, it is abundant.

I liked all you posted Demeter, but I have a problem with the part as quoted above. When a clerk gives me too much change I always give it back. It just seems wrong to me. The way I view it is, if I know it's not mine, I don't deserve it. Going along with what goes around comes around. Some folks can get in troulbe over counting out change wrong. (I'm sure not over 15 cents) but the point is, where would you draw the line? I sure don't want to start something that could cause me trouble at work!;)
For instance, once a clerk thought I was returning for exchange a wrist brace, when in fact I just wanted to show her it was used and in the box as new and just wanted the correct price on the one I was purchasing. That would've been about a $20.00 mistake on her part. I can't afford to lose $20.00 times 3.
I don't feel it's the same as finding money on the street. Money that there is no way to find the owner. That I feel is gifted money. At a large Christmas festival, years ago, my oldest found a little plastic M & M container. We thought nothing of it. When we got home he opened it and inside was $50.00. I felt awful for the child that lost it, but there was no way to find the owner. Sometimes I take this a bit far though. My youngest found $8.00 laying on a bleacher at the football game. He ran to me and asked if he could have it. I told him no. That the kid that left it there would be back soon. We watched as many kids ran by and never saw the money. I was just about to tell him to go get it when another kid picked it up - and it was obvious that he found it. Now why didn't I feel that my kid was entitled to that money? I don't know. I just hope the other kid needed it more than mine.
Well, that's my 2 cents worth. :)

At the end of your prosperity spell, or any spell, add: "This, or something better now manifests for me in totally satisfying and harmonious ways for the highest possible good of all concerned." This leaves the door open for the magic to create the best possible situation.

You overthink it gall. Your doing this only for the best, however should you still have ethical considerations put a clause into your spell "for the best of fates or may it be as it never was" Ask around Im sure someone has a better idea of how to do it but yeah theyre yah go.....

Grey, if your referring to me.....first let me say that NO ONE has ever accused ME of over thinking anything!8O and I'm flattered.
Next let me say that yes, I may have put too much thought into the deal with the youngest finding the 8 bucks at the football game.;) But for me, I just can't accept that it's right to keep the money when the clerk has counted back too much. Course I always ask them to recount it if they count back too little.:)

If I had all the money that I gave back because it was too much, I'd be a bit richer. I agree, I just don't want to be responsible for someone getting into trouble and I also feel that it's bad karma for me.
Especially when we're doing money workings, it's always good to ask that the funds come to you in the perfect way, as Gwion said. Most of us don't want to come into a windfall because a loved one died, etc.

The site's kinda cheesy but these are some pretty decent spells:
MONEY SPELL TO MEET EXISTING NEEDS
This spell helps bring money to meet existing needs. You
need to be precise as to how much money you need, and for
what reason you want it for. This is what to focus on.
At the start of your day, print, type, or typeset with your
computer, how much money you need, and what you want it for.
Draw a line around that statement.
Example:
I need $500 to pay the bills
or
I want $1,000 to buy a new or used car.
Fold the paper in half, and in half again,
and carry it with you during the day, for
at least 12 hours. Reread the paper,
several times, during the day.
When the night comes, go into your bedroom,
or ritual room, and light a new white candle.
Open the paper you have been carrying, and
reread the message that you wrote, one more time.
Say these words, three times:
From beyond this candle light,
The powers that rule over money come,
To bring to me this needed sum,
Aided by a cosmic name,
Because I burn this sacred flame...
Tear up the paper, and discard it in a wastebasket.
Repeat, each night, for seven days, or until the
money comes.
This spell is very powerful, and effective, when
you correctly follow the instructions.
If it is meant to be, you will get your money.

DEBT BANISHING SPELL
Supplies:
Rolled parchment, 2 inches wide and as long as you like
One black pen
One purple candle
Oil of your choice
Incense of your choice
Cleanse and consecrate all supplies with the four elements
(earth, air, fire, and water).
List all your debts on the parchment. Draw a banishing
pentacle on the back of the parchment.
Carve a banishing pentacle on the candle. Place the rolled
parchment in the candle holder then tighten the candle on
top.
Think of banishing your debts. Think of the feeling of
happiness and relief when the debts are banished. Light the
candle.Take the candle to the East quarter and ask that the
Sylphs send your message of debt-banishment out to the
universe in a safe and protective way, and ask that
prosperity return to you in the same manner. Put the candle
back on the altar and, in your own words, ask Juno to banish
the debt and replace with prosperous energy. Allow the
candle to burn completely. The paper will catch fire, so
watch what type of holder you are using (glass will break)
and that the candle holder is on a fire-safe surface.
As the candle burns, concentrate on banishing your debts,
your feelings of relief and happiness, and the coming
prosperity.

I have heard something similar to this ... but in the
version I heard, you are to put some coins into a cup while
you do the chant. I read this a while back in a book, but
the name of it escapes me at the moment; [it was probably]
either "A Century of Spells" or "Charms, Amulets, and
Talismans."

MONEY DOUBLING SPELL
This spells helps double any denomination of cash paper
money that you have.
First find some almost new cash paper money, in the largest
denomination possible. The twenty, or fifty dollar bill is good.
Place this in a white envelope, and lick, and seal it.
Fold the envelope, and say once, every day, for
about seven days:
Occult powers to me shall bring,
The way to double this sum.
Hear me, thou cherubim which sing,
Quickly, and softly come...
Hold the envelope up, and pretend that it has
become heavier.
Keep the envelope in your bedroom. After you receive
more money, open the envelope, and either spend,
or deposit the money that was in the envelope.

i say, do it.
only be careful- know that the outcome might be not at all what you would want.
i would first 'consult' with my Deity ( Mother), or any Goddess/God whose assistance i'm seeking. i would ask them to help me here if they see fit. do what's best in the situation at the moment.
that has never failed for me!
