View Full Version : looking for a patron for my transformation

As part of this quest for transformation that I'm on, I'm reconnecting with my spirituality, and part of that is forming a Patron relationship with a Goddess, as it has helped me in the past. Question now is - who?
Lilith was my Patron for a few years. It went OK, but I'm not sure I'm quite in her favour anymore. She does fit the theme of my transformation - inner power, sensuality, fire of a woman, etc - but a large part of this transformation was spurred on by me finding a boyfriend and having a relationship, and I don't think she would be quite happy with that!
For some reason Kali's name pops up into my head once in a while. Fits my South Asian heritage too (though no one in my family is Hindu). However, she frightens me. SERIOUSLY scares me. I can see how she fits the "transformation" part, but ARGH NO SCARY. I know someone who has her as a Patron and her life is more chaotic than I'd like. I haven't even looked up any information on her because just her name scares me. Augh. whyyyy o_O
After I wrote a long journal of my plans for transformation, I ran onto a page describing Persephone as the Goddess of Change and Transformation. Timely! I know only very superficial details about her though, but I am interested in going deeper.
As I am the creative sort, I have also looked into the Muses (Thalia and Terpsichore were major favourites in the past). I wonder if there are other Muse-like groupings of deities outside Greco-Roman mythology...maybe a Goddess of Writer's Block or something XD
Others I have thought about are Aphrodite, Athena, and Brigid, though I don't really feel very strongly towards them.
How do I find out? I'm not so good at meditating but have some success with words and music. Deep and royal purple are colours that have figured strongly in the transformational phase. The transformation is all-encompassing, but has a lot to do with sensuality and body acceptance. And I am fond of bats and fuzzy things! :D
Any ideas? Will I have to face the fearsome Goddess Whose Name I Can't Even Bear To Type argh? Or can I actually have some control over this?
thanks :)

Well I think that you can attempt to work with any god/dess that you choose as long as they are okay with it. (Unless you don't believe in them as actual beings). I think that a good way is to build a small altar and make some offerings. If you get a good feeling then proceed to talk to them about your issues. This article may help: http://davensjournal.com/index.htm?indexLessons.xhtml&2 For some reason I can't get the exact url to work, just go to the link and scroll down to an article titled, Relationships with the Deities. You also may want to check out a book called: A Book of Pagan Prayer by Ceisiwr Serith.

Loki.
If you want change and a wild ride through hell and back, accept no substitutes. Often painful but very effective at change.
Trust me on this one.

How about Tara? She has peaceful as well as fierce forms. And she was first venerated in India.
Green Tara contains all the Taras and can be called on by anyone. But if you get further into it, there are the 21 Taras (in most cases you need an empowerment from a Lama to practice these):

as well as 8 Taras who protect from the 8 dangers:

Dude, Kali does similar and she already frightens me. And I don't want "hell and back", done that, would not want to repeat that. I'm looking for positivity here. (Also, not particularly drawn to Loki or anyone from Norse mythology. Or anyone male, oddly.)
Tara sounds interesting. My name's similar, and she has been intriguing before - was she associated with stars in some fashion? It's worth a looksee, thanks :)

Does it need to be a deity?
Since you mentioned liking bats (as do I), why not ask for help from Bat Spirit (or "Spirit Bat" depending on your word order preference)? Bat is often associated with transformational periods. Bats also kick ass at navigating through the dark (transformation can veer off into unseen places - as I'm sure you know, change can be scary - hence, the "dark" and "unseen" comments). Bat is a darn good ally to have for many things, and your situation made me think of that.
Hope that helps!

Maybe "hell and back" was a bad choice of wording on my part. :)

OOOOO! I haven't thought of that. That's a great idea, thanks!

Egyptian god Khepri/Khepera is strongly associated with transformation and change - but you were looking for goddesses. I don't know of any female counterpart of Khepri, unfortunately. Good luck in your search, though!

If you're uncomfortable worshiping Kali I think you should try Durga. She possesses many of the same powers, and attributes which Kali does, but she is alot less frightening in appearance.

It could be just me, but isn't part of transformation facing your fears? Maybe the reason Kali scares you so much is because she has something to show you/represents something to you that you don't want to face.
What's the use in transformation if you come out the same person with the same fears?

Nah..I was thinking the same thing.
Transformation is scary and if Kali is showing herself to you, there may be a reason. From what I've heard from some of Her followers, if she wants your attention, she's going to get it somehow or other. The more hair-raising stories that I've heard have been from those that resisted the most.

I was thinking the same about Kali - that she's coming because she scares me. Which doesn't surprise me. I'm not quite as scared, but at the same time I'm not entirely sure I'm quite ready for all that change yet.
hmm. a lot to think about! thanks people.

One doesn't often get a choice as to when change comes. The choice is often in how you handle it.

Oh, I don't know. I think as long as you don't lose your own voice in the relationship. Lilith was not willing to submit to anything less than full personhood. I think sensuality and relationships were not so much the issue. It was more Adam and his needs being the issue that clashed with her. A bad match. That might be just my take on Lilith.
I've some stuff on Kali I can post later. :)
