My grandmother always wore a very large Sterling Silver and Onyx poison ring. Funny thing is, she promised it to me when I was young, that when she passed on, it would be mine. And then, when my younger sister was young, she promised it to her, too.
So my sister and I have vowed to do a timeshare with it. LOL. But I keep telling her, that it should be mine. I'm the one who has to live with my husband. She's still unwed :) Heh.

I have known alot of people that use them to store herbs or Essential Oils in them.
But I have always thought the posion in them was used to end your own life, not somebody elses. Kinda like secret agents would rather kill themselves before going through torture that would make them tell secrets.

Hey! I know someone who keeps a lock of hair in one. It's laminated there permanently. Some might think it's morbid, but it's very special to her.

You could use them to store antidotes, too. . . :)

The Victorians used to make similar jewelry - rings, lockets, etc as memento mori, to hold photos and locks of hair of dead loved ones which they could open and look at when they wanted comfoting. Eventually these evolved a bit, so that you had hair made into flowers and such under a layer of glass.
Perhaps it seems morbid to us, but I think it might be comforting, especilly in an era where you didn't have but one or two photographs, and those not very good, of family members.

when the clasp on mine worked (it just flops open now so i don't wear it anymore) i put a few drops of oil and a tiny pinch of herbs in it and blessed the ring. i used as a tiny amulet holder so to speak.

I like the amulet idea.
I also like the momento mori. My friend's father died quite suddenly (and violently) last year, and she has a matching ring and locket. The ring has hair and the locket has a picture and hair. At first she was hesitant to have them made, but I know now she's quite happy that she did.

Well, some are, in great quantity (but if you need that much, give up now!).
There was one company that used to sell them with perfume ointment in them. You could rub it from thence onto your wrists and pulse points, or just have a really nice smelling hand.
Some one should be clever and invent some that carry lipgloss. They'd sell right off the boutique shelves.
