The myths based on the deity Uranus are completely at odds with the planet's symbolism. The planet Uranus, discovered in 1781, prompting a time of social upheaval-such as the French revolution has traditionally been the ruler of change and revolution. This does not sit at all well with Ouranus of the Greek tradition an old sky tyrantwho was overthrown and castrated by his son Kronos (Saturn), Saturn also not being particulary known for change and innovation, it all seems quite an awkward fit.
Richard Tarnas, a professor of philsophy and psychology has put forward a new name- Prometheus for the planet. The humanistic impulses of the character of Prometheus -The titan who stole fire from Zeus in order to deliver it to humans also teaching them the arts of astrology, navigation, architectry and mathematics fitsperfectly with that which Uranus symbolically represents.
Tarnas has written a book ' Prometheus The Awakener' if any of you want to check his ideas out in anymore detail, I for one am all for it, its about time astrology stood proud and distinct from the shadow of astronomy and what better way to start this process than by renaming the planet of liberation?x
