this would go with f'lar's "popular subject" thread though off topic for that thread. it's also NOT aimed at anyone in this community but i've got several aquaintances from a "chat room" i don't even visit much anymore that insist on doing mass forwards of every half baked "inspirational" e-mail that comes along. the kind that say you are only a "real friend" if you reply instantly and forward the message to 50,000 people within the next 5 minutes and if you do not your dog will bite you, your wife will leave you for an arab shiek's hareem, all five of your daughters will get pregnant by the same guy who will immediately leave town and your mother in law will turn up on the doorstep to announce that she is moving in to stay FOREVER! and you end up slogging through the pile just in case there might be one message worth reading that you'll miss. one of the great many reasons i love you-all is that no one here has EVER done this to me and i quietly but definetely thank you all for that. my question is, i suppose, how do i make these well meaning but annoying people stop sending this junk mail.

I know exactly what you mean gunner. friends of mine have taken to sending me every idiotic forward that they can find, especially the "hotmail will boot you if u don't send this to ten million people" ones. Even worse than that their friends (who I don't even know!) steal my address from them and start sending me their dumbass forwards that are absolutly HUGE. Now I just found out that my blocked list is totally full and even though my junk mail filter is on Exclusive I get at least 1 e-mail a day from hotmail saying that my account is too large! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Phoenix have you tried cleaning out all your mailboxes?

Yes gunner, it is very irritating, that's why I don't give my "good" email address out to very many people. I keep "junk" accounts anyway to sign up with things such as web services, and then only have a "good" account or two for "important" stuff. There was a discussion on this or two in Pagan Geek anyway, as people have been talking about junk mail.

"hotmail"? i abandoned my hotmail account because it was getting to be mostly spam. last time i even checked it had somewhere around 700 e-mails that i never looked at and never will.

I mass emailed all my friends and told them not to send me that stuff, or I'll block them... I didn't say it very nicely either... I think they understood... they stopped sending me crap, and they still email me:)

that is a real problem phoenix, those long lists of names do get "harvested" by spammers, usually the grubby little bottom feeders who sell lists to the porn industry and scam artists. when there is something worth sending to friends don't they know how to cut and paste? or just send the url?

Okay..I know what you mean, Gunner.. One friend sends me the exact same forward to BOTH my yahoo & hotmail accounts (crap for Hotmail, I might as well ditch MSN cuz I don't use it anyway. ) But only moments after I get that message, lo and behold! I get about a million other messages coming in from other friends who send me the *exact* same message.. So I spend my time deleting all these super crappy e-mails ~ and when they ask if I got their messages. "Yes..I got them"...And that's as far as it goes.
Another one is I used to send out surveys like crazy..A friend asked me not to send them to her, so I was like...Okay, fine..No problem, I realize some people hate them. But then!!!!!!! (yes, then) a few weeks later, she sends *ME* surveys. After she told me not to send them to her.

Heheh..I'm like Myst though~ I give out my "good" address to you guys, and people I know that won't flood my inbox....The other ones, I don't bother to check unless completely necessary (ie..A friend comes on one of my IM's and goes "I sent you a message!!!!!!!"

 I swear... Next time I get mass fwd'ed....They're gonna get it cuz I'm sick and tired of sifting through all that crap.

My friends pick on me because I have about 15 or so email addresses but I use them for different things. I have a private email adress that only goes to special people and one for my adult mail (ironic I get no spam in that one!) I have one for my surveys and junk mail ect.... Works great for me. Also if I do a mass email of anything I use bcc to send it so no one gets my email addresses for friends and family.

A friend sent me this. I'd sent out a similar one to all the people who send me chain letters but this tops mine by far!

Then again after reading over it maybe it's not appropriate for a forum with minors.

Here's the funniest bits anyway:

Hello, my name is Basmati Kasaar. I am suffering from rare and deadly diseases: poor scores on final exams, extreme virginity, fear of being kidnapped and executed by anal electrocution, and guilt for not forwarding out 50 billion frigging chain letters sent to me by people who actually believe that if you send them on, then that poor 6-year-old girl in Arkansas with a breast on her forehead will be able to raise enough money to have it removed before her redneck parents sell her off to the travelling freak show. Do you honestly believe that Bill Gates is going to give you and everyone you send "his" email to $1000? How stupid are you?

The point being? If you get some chain letter that's threatening to leave you shagless or luckless for the rest of your life, delete it. If it's funny, send it on. Don't piss people off by making them feel guilty about a leper in Botswana with no teeth, who's been tied to a dead elephant for 27 years, whose only saviour is the 5 cents per letter he'll receive if you forward this mail, otherwise you'll end up like Miranda. Right? Now forward this to everyone you know otherwise you'll find all your knickers missing tomorrow morning.

Actually the Philipines sites are much funnier.... for approximately $2002 you can get a wife!

My sister actually had the mail order brides catalogs as part of a Russian assignment when she was in the Army. Weird...
