View Full Version : The Triquetra

Alrighty, my fiance is going to be getting me a triquetra pendent for a late V-day gift ( we didn't exchange gifts/go out to dinner due to weather and parents staying with us, and lack of moolah). I am drawn to the triquetra because it symbolizes (to me!) Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Mother, Madien, and Crone. Would it be like wearing the pentecale? >.> I want to wear it to work and college but I am unsure how the rest of the world will react...last time I wore my pentecale, I got negative feedback from my work, and that was in 12 grade.

Ugh.

I love them too. Unfortunately, I would be unable to wear one since I don't want everyone to associate my beliefs with the TV show "Charmed"!

That may work to your advantage though. I can't imagine you will get many negative responses to it after all the years the show was on air.

I wear one often - it doesn't have the circle around it (like in Charmed), but is just the three-pointed knot.

Most people have no idea what it is; they just think it's a Celtic knot. I've never gotten any negative feedback whatsoever with it.

I won't think people would bother about it. As a matter of fact some christain freinds of mine tell me its a purely christian symbol so people shouldn't bother you about that aspect of it.

See, that's also my fear, with "Charmed" being so..known to younger-ish age groups and stuff, im afraid some kids will go "Look mommy, that girl is a witch!!" And lo and behold some crazy mom will talk to my supervisor about "whats right and wrong in a workplace". (This has happend before, but not with me). I keep forgetting that the triquetra (with the circle intwined) is the 'Charmed' symbol...lol, to me its just the triquetra!

As has been said before, it's seen by most people that don't know as just some Celtic symbol.

You've also said that it symbolizes to you the Father Son and Holy Ghost. (as well as M/M/C)

So...if aonye asks you, tell them you wear it as a symbol of F/S/HG....doubtful that onyone will question that. if anyone cmments on what else it might symbolize based on tv shows and the like, just tell them that this is what it means to you, and just because it's on TV doesn't mean that that's all there is to it.

I actually have a tattoo of a Triquetra on my left shoulder blade. Most people just ask what it is or think its just a celtic knot. I had one guy who had a Triquetra also but he was Catholic and thought I was to.

I have got a few people bring up the "Charmed" show, usually I just say. "What show? I never seen it" And really I havent, most of the seasons it was on I either didnt have cable, or when I did have cable, another show I liked more was on at the same time Charmed was.

For me its Maiden Mother and Crone, I got it specifically for the Goddess Brighid also. Usally when people ask I say 'its a celtic knot' and they leave it at that usually. Unless they ask more, I dont give more.

I wouldnt worry about the work place. If someone says something about it or your boss/company tries to say something you might be able to hold them off on Religious Discriminantion (sp? thats so not right i know, lol) if you can word everything right ;)

It's a beautiful symbol and not nearly recognized as much as the pentacle or pentagram. Another wonderful pendant is the septagram, also known as the elven star. It's very beautiful IMHO. I would say wear it and if anyone comments on it tell them it's a symbol of the holy trinity.

I have a tattoo of a one without the circle (trinity knot) and everyone just assumes that its a catholic symbol for the trinity, instead of the triple goddess/god. Although if they ask I tell them what it means to me. Never had a problem.

As many people have said.. Wear it. But if people ask, just say it's the holy trinity. They'll assume Christianity, and you won't have to go any further :). I saw a girl in my Econ class recently who had one tattooed on her wrist. I asked her if she was into Celtic things and she said, well it's more of the Catholic trinity. I said hmm.. If only she knew it didn't have Christian origins.. :).

I'm very much in the broom closet, but I wear my triquetra openly. It was used by the Celtic Christian church as a symbol of the Holy Trinity, so that's what I tell them. My ancestry goes back to Ireland so I can truly claim Celtic roots, and I've never had anyone question me about it beyond that. Then again, I don't think anyone around me watches 'Charmed' to have ever seen it used in that show.

There will always be somebody who will give you 'negative feedback' regardless of how you express yourself. There are people who will jump on a pentacle, people who will jump on a crucifix, people who will jump on too much jewelry, people who will jump on too little. You can't expect to please anybody but yourself, so do that, and when the inevitbable naysayer idgit wanders by, chuckle and remember that he's the one that's full of it, not you.

I wear a spiral triskelion pretty much 24/7, including to work and to church occasionally when I attend with my kids. Perhaps it's not as well known as the triqueta, not having been featured on a tv show. No one has ever asked about it in the 3 years I've worn it. I guess it just looks like another Celtic knot, and a fairly simple one compared to some.

I have a set of wooden triquetra earrings and pendant carved by a friend of mine. when I wear them, they attract lots of attention, people tell me they're beautiful and want to know where I got them.

Never had any negative feedback.

My coworker wears a triquetra necklace everyday, in a very customer-service job. No one's ever complained, but she has been complimented on it! She wears that one and her pentacle outside of work, but inside, just the triquetra. As others have said, it can really mean about anything, so go for it! :hahugh:

I have a Triquetra tattoo on my lower back. For me,it's a celtic symbol for mind, body and spirit. It actually means quit a lot of different things.

I do believe that if you watch the movie National Treasure that there was a church of some kind that had triquetras in/on it and the priests wore them,so some christian religion uses it,I suppose. Prolly another symbol that was taken from another pagan religion. No offense intended.

I say,if ya wanna wear one....wear it! Who cares what others think anyway? If someone asks ya what it means....tell them what it means to you. People ask my hubby and I about our pentacle necklaces all the time.

i have 2 triquertas that i wear at work, i have only had to explain about it once. i told them all of the meanings of it, and it depended on your belife.

the one i wear on my name tag is pretty big but you really cant see it, considering all of the other crap i have on it, my pocket knife, as well as my saftey glasses. i wear it on a lanyard around my neck.

its this one exactly come to think of it, and i bought it years before i realized i was a witch lol.

've had a tat of one on my right hand since I was 19. I get asked about it quite often. One old man actually slapped my hand and called it "the devil's symbol" and told me I was evil for it. I just smiled and told him that if he knew me he'd know I wasn't.

I mostly tell people its a celtic trinity and leave it at that, makes life easier. Fellow pagans will connect the knot with my tree of life pendant and know. I love those little knowing smiles I get from people sometimes when they compliment my tat/necklace.

The Celtic Christian stance is that the triquetra is symbolic of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit... the "Three-in-One." A tiny Celtic Christian lesson on the triquetra in case you're intrigued <g>. The fact that the three parts are interwoven indicates that all are one numerically while they still remain a Person on their own. If I had some scratch paper and you were sitting beside me, I could also show you an interesting little doodle using the triquetra that makes a fun way to teach little ones about the Trinity.

Although the Trinity symbolism is "the" symbolism, there are other groupings of three that can be mentioned as well - such as land, sea, and sky: one Creation made of three elements.

I have the exact same piece. I wear it every day.

At the time Charmed was popular, I got a lot of comments on liking "that horrid witch show" but I explained that it is a religious symbol to me and had nothing to do with the show. I had a manager ask me to remove it once, because she was worried it would disturb the customers. (She tried to indicate that she'd had complaints.) I told her that it would be discrimination to ask me to remove an item that was of religious significance to me. I worked there for three years after with nary a comment on it other than how beautiful a piece it is.

Wear the triquetra for you... don't worry about what others think!

I really love that symbol. I bought a gold one for my mother years ago when she was a devoted Christian to symbolize Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

I would just tell people it symbolizes the trinity and that should stop questions in their tracks. Unless the next question is "what church do you attend" people can be so predictable. *laughs*

I actually bought my first pentacle today, consequences be damned...
if anyone cares to judge me based on the symbol hanging around my neck may they be judged as well.

*nods*

I hope that you can wear it with pride.

I wear a triskele rather than a triquetra ... not because of the Charmed associations, but it helps to avoid them.

I wear this:

and a triple moon symbol:
http://www.ancientcircles.com/jewelry/sunmoon/graphics/pent-tm2.gif (except mine has a blue stone in the centre)
and the only comments I've received is how beautiful it is. I'm not in or out a broom closet. I'm who I am and people will have to learn how to accept it.

I have a triquetra ring (with the circle) that I wear every day. I have never had anyone associate it with Charmed (or at least not mention it to me) nor have I ever been questioned about it by anyone. People just seem to accept it as Celtic knotwork and leave it at that... or that is the way it seems to me.

even though i wasn't born under it, i wear the token associated with the celtic birthsign Hop Tu Naa.

i like that it includes triquetras, even if they are slightly squished. :)

fortunately for me, army regulations make me able to wear it on my dog-tags at all times, and that means (since they're under my shirt) that very few people see it.

here's a question: what's the difference between a triquetra and a triskele?

So far as I know, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, the triskele does not have the circle in it, where as the triquetra does.
Again, feel free to correct me if I am wrong, because I really don't know

Hehe! Thanks for all the imput! Here is the one that I am wanting my fiance to get me...
:) That's pretty much exactly the one I have... mine is in gold and I love it. I have never had a negative comment on it.

I always thought the triskele or triskelion was the swirly triple spiral, while the triquetra was the three-cornered knot. Don't take my word for it, though; I could be WAY off base here, since I freely admit I have no idea what I'm talking about. ;)

Picture, wise; I thought the triquetra was similar to the one you posted (with or without circle), while the triskele is similar to:

wikipedia and google answered my question for me. the triquetra is the three-pointed knot, with or without the circle.

http://theunicornshoppe.com/articles/triquetra.gif

the triskele is three interlocked spirals, in varying complexities.

Hey!! I used to have a pendent just like that!!! With the swirly thingys in it! This was before I knew it represednted the HT and stuff. Wow, who knew I was wearing it before hand? Sucks, though, cuz I've since then lost that pendent.

Okay, I think I'm buying it myself today...since my fiance hasnt bought it yet, and I'm really REALLY REAAALLLYYYYY drawn to it. >.> im not odd i promise. :)

*spazzes* Sorry, im just doing all the math in my head right now. I just got paid and have 98 dollars....so...the pendent cost 19.95 (that is with shipping and handling). Andddd, I'll have to buy gas, which is about 20-30 bucks depending on prices...and that's about it, i think. So....I think....I'm gonna buy it...*dies* Gawds, I dunno!!! I've never bought stuff from online before. Any advice? Should I use paypal or just buy it normally?

EDIT- Well, so i just trying buying it. My card doesnt work. This really sucks.

My boyfriend got me a triquetra necklace a few months ago. It has crystals in it, and is very pretty - the type of necklace I can wear casually or with dress. I've never had any negative experiences with it. In fact, if anyone comments on it, they're people who appreciate Irish culture. I've never had a random Charmed fan stop me for questions or anything like that.

They are pretty but like most I don't like the charmed connection. I had a kid comment on my pentacle saying it looked like the symbol from charmed. I have to stop wearing celtic knot inspired jewlery lol.

If thats the symbol that calls to you I say wear it! Personal I either go for a pentacle or the triple goddess moons (see picture of my tattoo in siggy)

Wear it, no one will no what it means to you. Most people will either think it is a Christian symbol for the trinity or they will think it is a celtic knot. I have a tattoo of a shamrock with a trinity knot in each leaf on my shoulder, if someone asks about them, I respond in a way that I think they can handle. For me it is primarily a symbol of the Trinity, but I also explain the Pagan meaning as well. Heck, I have a pentacle charm that I wear on a charm braclet. It looks like either a celtic knot or a flower, nobody has ever noticed it.
