The reason for the witches hat was to associate them with the common folk and the "hicks". There was a time when the cone hat was popular among the nobility of Europe. By the time that this fashion trend hit the outer lying area's of Europe it had already gone out of style with the nobility. They used the hat with a wide brim to associate pagan ways with being behind the times, out of style, and pagan ways.

I'm pretty sure the witches hat thing just represents the "cone of power" like raising energy and stuff... I could be wrong though so don't quote me on that! I think there is more than one explaination..

That's what I've heard too.
btw in the future if you don't know where a thread should go place it in the forum where you think it should and if it doesn't belong there one of the mods will happily move it for you :)

The explanation I'm most willing to accept is that it started as an insult in the same pagan=country bumpkin vein that it was supposed to mean that witches were so backward that they used last years fashion of hat still.

I have no clue what the hat is for myself
and neither do I.
I use my hat to keep the keep the sun out of my eyes and to wave away flies and such!:T
But I found something interesting in a folk history book last Oct.
It said that it was believed that Witches rode brooms because they were afriad of horses. And that was also the reason that horseshoes were placed over doorways. Kinda like where there's a horseshoe, theres a horse....it would scare the Witches away.
That makes better since to me as to why people would hang a horseshoe on a wall in the first place. I've always heard that if ya hang 'em pointing down that all the luck would run out....so who would do that anyway....who would want the luck to run out? Just an interesting tid-bit.

Uhm, that'd be why people hang horse shoes pointing up...? :)

Right Myst --- hang 'em pointin' up. But that requires a bit more work cause you gotta use 2 nails and hammer the nails in through the holes made for the horseshoe nail. The other way you can hang the shoe on any ole nail that happens to be already in the wall.

There's a horse shoe on my kitchen wall in the corner and guess which way it's pointin'?8O 8O 8O

So on my way to work this morning I got to thinking about "Why is a horseshoe considered good luck anyway?"
I figure that if they scared the Witch away (and that was what you were aiming on doing) then that would be good luck. What do ya'll think?
(And the shoe on my wall? Well it's still there. I suddenly remembered last fall one of the kids found it on the fence line and brought it in....hanging on the nail in the wall was a quick fix for gettin it out of my way. I'll take it down to the barn one of these days, where it belongs. Probably will hand it on any ole nail that already there, pointin down, after all....I have no reason to scare Witches away!)
