Lately I have been doing a bit research about magic mirrors. From what I gather (correct me if I'm wrong) is that a magic mirror is also called a black mirror because the back of it is painted black. And that they are often used for scrying, protection and binding spells.

Right now I am creating a beauty spell and I thought about using a mirror. So here is my question; Can one magic mirror be used for different things? Can I use one in a beauty spell then for scrying? It seems that the enegry would be interfered with. Mirrors are delicate things in spell work (no pun intended), what with that whole seven years bad luck thing. I just don't want to screw things up.

Many magic mirrors used for scrying are not just painted black but are prepared ritually especially for scrying. I would think a spell involving beauty would benefit from being able to see oneself in the mirror. One exception I can think of would be if one desires to see how one would look in the future.

Mirrors certainly can be used for beauty spells. However I personally wouldn't use the same mirror for many purposes.

scrying mirrors can be used for much more then simply divination, protection or binding spells.
theres no such thing as screwing things up, the only way you can do that is to not experiement or try.
a black mirror is a portal, a portal can be placed, but its you who gives it a point of intrest.
everything else should be learned really by experimentation and working with it, otherwise its just going to sound like silly nonsense.

Magic mirrors are not always normal glass mirrors painted black. John Dee's magic mirror was a large piece of highly polished obsidian.

Probably best to use two different mirrors. They can be really inexpensive, for example for one spell I grabbed a little black cosmetic mirror at the drugstore for a few dollars.

I agree with SR here...as tempted as I was to move this thread to Dreams and Divination at first when I saw it, I realize the signifigance of what you are asking.

Any magickal tool used for a specific purpose should be Cleansed, Consecrated, and Charged, the the C's as my HPS used to say years ago.

Use one such mirror for divination. Place it on the floor, and pour a little water over it, and stare into it.

Some look at their reflection while divining, and many find that very distracting, myself included. Which is why I usually use water, as well as I am a Water sign, and very attuned to the element.

Use another mirror STRICTLY for your beauty spell. Anoint the frame around it with Rose oil, and gently and lovingly sprinkle pink rose petals over it while it is flat.
Gaze at your reflection through the petals. See yourself through them. See yourself for the beautiful person you are.

All these and any other symbolisms, make sure you keep firm to their meaning. This will greatly increase the potency of your spell, rather than just staring at yourself in the medicine cabinet, saying, "I am beautiful. Yeah, right."

Hope this helps some...good luck!

This has all been really helpful.

The symbolism of the mirror and it's relationship to the effectiviness of a spell is clearer to me now. So cleansing the mirror in between different purposes isn't a good idea, the symbolism is not as strong?

Let me try an analogy for you...

You have your regular dishes, that you use, and clean, and use again, for the same purpose.

You also have a special set, or two, or three, for special, separate occasions.

Do you see the parrellel?

You want to create a magickal bond of sorts with the tool of your craft.
If you "cleanse" it, or purify it, over and over again, you will never let that energy build up, which makes it easier for you to use, as it builds up a residual "energy signature", each time you use it, thus making it more effective.

If you were to purify it each time, you would be back to square one.

You want to create a "bond" with each specific item you use.

Does this make sense, or did I just go over your head?

Hmm... well, the ones that I make can be used for divination, magic, or primping...

Black mirrors are wells. Things from the past (read: baggage) can be released into them, to sink into the depths of the past.

Yes, this makes sense.

I worded that last post just...awfully.

That bit about Black mirrors sounds really interesting, and is something, I think I really need to do, but how do you release things into it (like do you just say the things you want to release or put some kind of magical symbol on it, etc).

Yes, &/or yes

Speak into the well the things that you wish to release, then visualize them sliding down into the darkness in a counter-clockwise spiral 'til they're out of sight. Sometimes placing a token of that which you are releasing on the mirror will help. If you want to use some sort of appropriate magical symbols, I reckon that's OK, too (I can't think of any particular reason why it wouldn't be alright to do so).

Remember though, that it is the color BLACK that is key here.

Black absorbs things. A mirror is like a water image, thus a well.

You can take anything black really, I would think and use it the same way. Take a black candle to absorb bad energy, etc...as it is fire. Fire/Fire, Water/Water...

See the correlation? ;)

And no, dear...you did NOT post that "just awful". You simply were asking for more clarification, that's all. I understood perfectly what you were getting at. ;)

No worries...chin up! :)

I understand your point about black, but I've made mirrors that were blue, brown & green. They all worked equally well in all respects. The concept of a WELL is the key here.
