View Full Version : I'm scared I'm going to get fired...

I had to call in on short notice this morning. I tried all night to sleep but couldn't. At 5am I realized that if I went to work my 7-1 shift I was going to do very poorly on my exam at 2. Everyone tells me it's important not to compromise my schoolwork for work so I stayed home and slept. The manager I spoke with said they'd have to write me up for calling in on short notice, and that's okay. I just worry I will get fired.
I've only been there a few weeks and I've had other problems. The way they do the tills, is that you get assigned to one and if it's short at the end of the shift, you get written up for it despite the fact that many other people use it and the managers skim it (take money out) throughout the shift. Anyways, my till was $20 short last shift and I don't know if they managed to locate it or not.
I'm really regretting my decision to call in, honestly, I'd rather do poorly on an exam and not worry about starving. Andrew and I are in terrible shape financially. We are in about $1000 debt on the credit card and only have another $2000 to the limit. We really need my paycheques to pay down the card and so we can pay the bills (andrew is working 30 hours a week while going to school). My cat also needs expensive dental surgery and we have to pay for Andrew's dentist work all at once as well because he forgot to pay the bill last month. If I were to get fired, I don't know what I'd do. It took me about a month to find this job and it would probably take a while to find another and all that time we'd be going further and further in the hole. We will be fine after he graduates, but that's 5 months away and we need the money to live in the meantime. I'm terrified.
If you could send me some job-keeping energy I'd appreciate it.

Energy sent. :hugz: Hang in there.

It's a lot more terrifying when you really need a job, trust me I know. However, coming from a boss who deals with staffing issues ALL of the time, I would personally much rather that someone called out on short notice then didn't call in at all and/or slept through their shift.

Concentrate on doing the best that you can do while at work, and your managers will notice.

Maybe at work ask that no one else uses your till, and make sure that you count the money that the managers skim. Because YOU are responsible for that money, you have the right to ask these things. Trust me, you want to be in control of your cash at all times...I have had more problems (and seen problems working as a manager) with other people touching my tills. As soon as *I* am the only one using it, I no longer have issues with it being short.

As for calling in---if it's only once, I can't see why they can write you up. I know in Ontario you can have up to 10 days emergency leave (ie. health issues, etc) that is not paid (this is from Employment Standards). An employer can only do something about absenteeism until after the 10 days (which is calculated January 1st to December 31st).
