Here's a question for you...ladies (and gents, if they would like to chime in..lol.).
When and where did you first learn about menstruation?
I first learned horror stories about it from a friend in the third grade. Then later, through the school nurse. When they separated the girls from the boys one day, and took the girls in a room to show them the movie, "Growing up and liking it".
Heh...all I remember, is the school nurse taking out an adhesive feminine napkin, and sticking it to her uniform, to demonstrate the use of such items.
LOL.
About three weeks later, I got my first period. It was the end of my fifth grade year.
My mom was probably the LAST person to tell me anything about it. And that was only because I had already started, and I needed to ask her for pads. All my mom used, in those days, were the old.."Fempads" ..the ones with the belt..LOL. She was shocked when I started, and made a big fuss about it, even telling my father that "Their little girl was becoming a woman". Oy.

I walked in on my mom in the bathroom when I was 2 or 3 and had a fit that she was bleeding.

I just thought my mom had ate something that upset her tummy. But then I believed I had orange eyes till I was 6....
I saw one of those lovely videos where they tell you everything except what you really need to know. I was the very innocent looking child who asked all the questions that got the "You'll learn next year." reply. :D
I do remember tampons were considered evil by my mom. I didn't try a tampon until I was in my late teens. Now I've been looking at the rubber menstrual caps. They look much cleaner and more comfortable than pads or tampons, which I hate with a passion.

When I was 7 or so, I remember I had a scab on my knee. I was really bad at picking scabs and I don't know why but I wiped my knee on my panties. My mom freaked out, went and bought me some pads and we had this real uncomfortable conversation pretty much consisting of "When you're old enough to have babies, you will". When I *actually* started-in about 6th grade-I was in the bathroom at school. These two girls walked in while I was in the stall, I had just pulled my panties down and realized it. They had gone in the stalls on either side of me, stood on the toilet and looked over the wall to see who I was. They saw the blood and started making fun of me. :( I was pretty tramatized and hid it from my mom for as long as I could. Eventually when I told her we didn't talk about it at all. *sigh*

I was rather lucky in that respect, Margie. My closest friends at the time, had already gotten theirs. And when it first happened, I immediately discussed it with them, and they had something in their bags to get me through the day. I remember feeling faintly excited, and then awfully embarrassed when my mom made such a big deal of it later in the day....

i went to the bathroom one day just before my 11th birthday, and was bleeding i just freaked!
mom said you can get pregnant now. and got me a box of pads with a belt. (yuck) she never told me how i would get pregnant . but i knew it had to do with boys:D
my daughter is well rehearsed, and she said if it happens at school she said she'd call and say code red mom. what a great kid.

My grandmother tried to explain it to me when I was 10, but the way she explained it made me think that brown stuff would come out of my knees.
When I got it a year later I finally realized what she had been saying.

We had a health class in school that the nuns were very embarrassed about teaching. We saw a film and got a booklet. When I did get it, we were at a dance recital. I wasn't sure what it was at first. My mother was furious with me that I had messed up my underwear.
Not the best introduction to womanhood.

I got it a week early at school once, when I was in the seventh grade, and didn't have anything on me. I was wearing powder blue pants that day. And it was one of those types that didn't sneak up...it just..well..you know. All of a sudden, i'm sitting there in class..and boom! i get up, and wrap my jacket around me, but there's blood on the seat. I tried to wipe it discreetly, and go to the nurse. My mom had to leave work, bring me a change of clothes..I was sooo embarrassed..and my mom was angry at me. Ugh...that really sucked.

That wasn't very nice of your moms! After all, you couldn't have planned for it, could you?

 And it would have been nice if SHE'd ever talked to me about it instead of leaving it up to a bunch of blushing Catholic nuns.....
