I have a Persian cat, over a year old, and lately she's not using her litterbox... she goes all over the place, mostly in a soil filled planter.... but also where I spend a lot of time, like outside my bedroom door or near the computer... she never had problems with litter before... I tried moving the box, changing the litter, but no matter what she absolutely refuses to go in it.... and you know it's unpleasent to be woken up by the smell of... .uggghhh

could she be in heat? maybe she's ill? any suggestions what I should do?

perhaps heat. enjoy!! lol

if it continues for more than say 2 weeks, take her to the vet to be sure, but i think she'll be ok.

This has been going for ... maybe a month or so, her litterbox was totally unused...and everytime she goes on the floor she makes digging motions all around...... _inabox_

either way, thanks for the reply  i'm mostly betting on heat myself but better safe than sorry

I'd definitely take her to the vet also... she could have a urinary tract infection or something like that which could be causing her bad litter box habits.

One thing that worked for us was installing an additional litterbox... once we did that, our cat started using the boxes again.

Hope your kitty feels better soon!

Did you change type or brand of litter? Sometimes they can be picky about their cat litters.
I always have 2 boxes in the same location. I found many cats like one for pee and one for poo. :)

I tried changing the brand as well... that's an interesting idea the 2 boxes... it would sure beat having poo in front of my computer or door... _inabox_

thanks for the replies everyone,

Take her to the vet. If this has been going on for more than a month, and she's not using her box at all, then she probably has a urinary tract infection or something else along those lines. You need to rule out medical causes before assuming it's a behavior problem.

Cystitis is quite common in cats. If you're feeding her a lot of dry food, that seems to be one of the causes, at least it has been in our household.
