I have no idea where this should go, please move it if it's best somewhere else!!! :)
OK, I am born in June (gemini's rule:razz: )
and I think June is the only month that doesn't have ONE given stone... I have on my list:
lt. amythest
alexanderite
pearl
and I have heard opal???
does anyone know which one it is supposed to be? and why it's so messed up? :o

I think most months have more than one stone associated with it. I was born in October (scorpio's rule :nyah: ) and its stones are opal and the onther one i think is pink topaz. I normally hear about pearls being associated with June.
Hope that helped alittle

Yep, I think all the months have more than one gemstone association. I think it's great because we can:
a) pick and choose which one we like best, or
b) buy or wear more than one, or all of them.

I'm born in June & I've always heard pearl. However, my high school class ring, I got an Alexandrite. And I just LOVE Ameythyst. It's my absolute favorite. I'm not impressed much by pearls. Except for the black ones I see from time to time.

I'm a garnet (but an Aquarius who cusps hard on Capricorn), too!

I'm trying to get a jewelry business off the ground, so I have to (try to) know this stuff. :p
Most gem scholars seem to think that the tradition of wearing birthstones sprung from the Breastplate of Aaron (or Breastplate of the High Priest), a ceremonial Judeo-Christian religious garment that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. It's described in Exodus 28, 15-30. Fun, huh?
Wearing birthstones probably became popular in 15th or 16th century Europe (the International Colored Gemstone Association traces it back to Poland). Supposedly, if you could afford it, everyone wore that month's gem, because the stone's properties were heightened at that time. Later, they began to wear only the gem that was associated with the month of their birth.
Nowadays, the four most commonly seen birthstone systems (that I've seen anyway) are the modern, traditional, Vedic, and 'mystic' lists.
The modern set of birthstones is the official birthstone list from the Jewelers of America (called American National Association of Jewelers, when this list was adopted). These stones were officially adopted in 1912. In the US (probably elsewhere too? I'm not totally sure), this is the standard, 'accepted' list.
The traditional birthstone list has 'older' birthstones and has some overlap with the modern list, so you'll sometimes see the two smooshed together. There's some variation in traditional birthstone lists because the stones reflect various societal birthstone traditions (some can be traced back to the 15th century), and just about each country/region seemed to have their own special little variation. People also didn't have ways of catagorizing stones by mineral structure and stuff like we do, so stones were catagorized by color. People chose which gemstone to wear based on its colors and magic/healing properties.
The mystical birthstones are drawn from Tibetan origin.
Vedic birthstones come from Vedic astrology associations.
There are some others floating around, too -- some even based off of what day of the week you were born on. I can post up some rough charts, if anyone's interested. :)
An interesting book the check out is The Curious Lore of Gemstones by George Frederick Kunz.

No! Not at all! That was really informative. I would love to see the charts & other info you can share with us. I've always wondered why there's so many variations. I never realized they were from different lists.
BTW, welcome to Mysticwicks!

It was an effort make certain stone popular, so they could be sold. It may have been based on traditions.
I am a Gemini, and I've owned emeralds, moss agate and pearls.
I find that pearls have a strong healing effect, emeralds seem to assist with mental clarity, and memory. Moss agate seems to make one get in better touch with health and the natural world.
What I really find is that at different times in my life I'm attracted to different stones. Right now it's opal and garnet. For a while it was blue topaz.
"When I were a teen," is was torquoise, big pieces of it.
I really think it's an individual choice. What do you like?

:bigredgri Thanks, Hrafnhilde. :D I so didn't know all that about the birthstones~ am copying and pasting... :) I think I like bloodstone better for Feb. birthdays though~ not much of an amythest fan I'm not, I'm not...
And, btw...What colour is chalcedony? Yellow (if I remember correctly) Have to get out my books again.

The chalcedony I have is a orangey-yellow colour. But doens't it come in different colours? I know agate does. I don't know a lot about gems...just what I like. :)
Thanks so much for all the effort for putting that list together, Hrafnhilde! I'm saving all that info for later uses. That is such a comprehensive list!
I think you're right, Epona, that it's individual choices. I'm attracted to different stones at different times of my life & according to what I need.
Ok...just rambling here. I think the stone's attributes corresponds with the zodiac/month/time/day's attributes rather than just for the people borned under that sign or time. Perhaps that's why we're attracted to different stones at different times, rather than our own birthstones.

I've always been told that topaz (November, cusp Scorpio and Sagittarius) was my birthstone. But I don't really like yellow topaz, so it's nice to see all these other stone suggestions. Can you get blue topaz, does anyone know? I thought I saw some in a catalogue, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I have a citrine I love (It ran away for a while, but I found it when I tidied my room) so that can be my birthstone now :D.
