I'm freaking out, being very paranoid right now... a few days ago, my mom pointed out a weird circle thing on Daphne's hind leg. I just figured it was the shadow from her weird muscle tone, and didn't worry. well, today, i noticed it, and took a closer look, and realized that its the skin/fur... its not bald... i can't tell if the fur is really any different... but the skin looks really dry and leathery, just in that circle spot. its not perfectly round, but its still round... so i'm freaking out, because if daphne has it, then everyone else probably does, too... i mean, with all the cats, the dogs, the rabbits, can birds get it too? i know people can get it, and just thinking about it is making me itch all over... i'm going to have to call the vet tomorrow to see if i can get her in, and they can test her... luckily i'm not totally broke right now... i tried doing an image search, but there were only a few pictures, most of them were totally bald spots, so maybe i'm being paranoid...

Usually is transfered between cats and dogs (don't think birds can get it). If you are worried about yourself getting it you will need to do constant washes of your clothes, body, linen and anything that comes in contact with the animals. Spreads easily and is hard to get rid of.

If you have a black light, it shines under that.

I have a cat who does something similiar occasionally on the top of the head, and it's not ringworm, but the vet has no idea what it is, just that steroids get rid of it.

On another note, one time I had no pets, I ended up with ringworm on my face, and never did figure out where it came from.

Hope all is well.

Yup, Black light should work to see if its ringworm. (aside from the vet telling you)

You yourself wont get ringworm from the dog, its different than the ringworm that we get, HOWEVER you can still carry it and transfer it to the other dogs and cats. Im not sure though about birds or rabbits. I would seperate the dog from all the other animals and dont allow them to have contact right now until you can check them over throughly, although now that I think about it one of the dogs can carry it on them and it not show up. So it probably would be best to get all treated (if possible) or at least narrow it down to those you think might have been more exposed.

My friends, boyfriends mother (thats a mouth full) anyways, shes a damn puppymill. (wish I could shut her down, I hate the B--) and she had it go throguh her dogs. A whole litter of puppies got it from their mom not long after they were born. She, in puppymill fashion, hometreated and now all those poor puppies, (now older) have messed up coats that wont grow right in some spots. I remember her bytching about how she couldnt sell them for what they are worth now cause of the coats <rollseyes> I refained myself from going off, kids were around and you cant talk to people like her, shes an 'expert' (an expert who cant put a BIS on her male after 2 years, lol)

Good luck, its nothing that I think will cause the dogs major amount of harm, esp since you are a responsible one and going to a vet. It just a pain in the butt to deal with!! Its making me itch thinking about it.

Oh my friends cats got that...and than all her kids got it and she did too. I never really looked at the cats too much...but they had bald spots. On the kids they were patches of dry skin with red rings. Her one kid even ended up with a bald patch in his head. O.o

It was a mess. It's contagious. But yeah...I would seperate the one from the rest and maybe go through and do checks on the rest of them.

There is only one strain of ringworm that can be passed from dogs to cats and/or people. Unfortunately, My Dog got this years ago from a kid petting him in our apartment complex.

Two of the five cats got it, I got it, sister who was staying with us got it...

On the animals, it shows as a bald, scaly spot. I've had strays I was feeding get it since and I apply the generic form of Monistat 7 to the spot. If you show up with a round, pink, itchy blotch on your body, you can pack it with Monistat and cover it with a band-aid. Do this twice a day for about a week or so and it will clear up the ringworm.

Bathe Daphne and bathe the others. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum. Wash EVERYTHING she lays on. After vacuuming, I sprayed down our sofa cushions, walls, etc with Lysol...ringworm is NOT a worm, it is a FUNGUS...so the Lysol helps to kill it. Make sure the Lysol is dry and the air has cleared of the fumes before letting the animals back into the room.

There is a shot the cats can get to keep them from getting it. Ask your vet. If they already have it, the shot will help cure it. You just need to clean the house from top to bottom to make sure there aren't any more spores. (Yes, spores floating around is a creepy/yucky thought *shudder*)

Even if the ringworm appears to be gone, continue treatment for the full amount of time the vet suggests. It has a way of appearing to be gone and then showing up again...

Good Luck!

the vaccine is program and is not tested for the use in ringworm ! however i have found this can help.
the best out there is a syrup you give for 6 weeks.

but dont panic ringworm is normally shown as a bald spot only one strain of ringworm will show under a black light but is very distingishable as the spot grows bigger and is rougth to touch. it nomally prsents on ears and head first but you never know with these things.

keep an eye on it.

Thanks, everybody... I was so busy this morning that i completely forgot to call the vet, and now i'm at work and won't be free to call until 6, after the vet closes! so i'll have to call tomorrow... I did try the monistat on Daphne last night, because i read that it wouldn't hurt. it seemed to help it a little tiny bit, she was being a drama queen and started crying last night, probably because she could tell i was worried... the fur is still there, so i'm thinking maybe its a different kind of fungus, but the best way to tell is to take her to the vet for a skin scraping... thanks everyone for your replies!

I have heard that sometimes program is used to treat ringworm. Yes, it is "off label" use.

But the vaccine I was talking about is an actual injection given by the vet.

Doesn't prevent infection, eliminate the fungus from infected cats, or
completely protect cats from disease

However, I know that is the only treatment Aradia and Loki got. I washed them both once, but that was it. No dips, no pills, just the shots.

Sam, Dee and Bunny also got the vaccination, but never contracted the ringworm.
