It is little more than a dark smudge near the surface of a lake - but it could still signify the birth of a new legend.
For this shadowy image is causing more than a ripple of interest among monster aficionados.
And to the man who took it, the picture is proof that something strange lurks in the waters of Windermere.

Well, if there is a lake monster, it hasn't been there long. My husband grew up in Bowness-on-Windermere in the 40s and 50s and never heard anything about a lake monster.
I notice he doesn't say exactly where he took the photo from -that shoreline in the background looks a lot like Belle Isle, which is in the middle of the lake (hubby's taken me to Windermere many times). If so, then that pier on the waterside is just one of those tiny ones for tying a rowboat to. Which would make that wake no more than 15 feet long.
There is a steep hillside opposite the island, where the picture could be taken from, but it's nowhere near a thousand feet high. I've just checked the map and the highest point on that part of the shoreline is marked as 269 metres - around 800 feet.
The whole area around Lake Windermere is quite heavily populated (Belle Isle is only about a hundred yards from a busy ferry crossing), there are all kinds of boats going up and down it every day, from rented-out rowboats to yachts and ferries. Additionally, the place is wall-to-wall tourists and holiday-makers every year from May to October. If there was anything unusual in the lake, you'd think more people would have noticed it!
ETA: In fact, to show you how crowded with boats the lake is, here's a shot of Belle Isle: http://www.leaney.org/photos/2004/20041126m.jpg

That doesn't look very convincing. I don't kow anything (at all) about that body of water, but that ripple looks like it easily could've been made by any fish swimming near the surface briefly.

I think it kinda looks like a duck, but it is still cool.

From the comments in the original article:
Good try for your tourist industry but sorry we are not in the market for new found monsters. Try towing a bigger log next time.

That's what I was thinking. 8O But I still think it's fun stuff!

It was almost certainly an otter - they live in and around the lake, and conservationists have even built holts for them on the lake shores.
I think that solves this particular "mystery".

Lake monsters should all stay the same, no smudges on water... like this one enjoying the sun:
