did anybody watch the A&E movie 'Shackleton', with Kenneth Branagh? it will be repeated in it's entirety Friday night. i thought it was very well done.
then on Sunday, the History Channel is running 'Antarctica; A Frozen History'. see how cheaply you could retire there!

pretty amazing, those Antarctic explorers. heading out into a frozen wilderness, not really knowing what they'd find. i remember reading about the doomed Scott expedition when i was a kid. a couple of the crew were sent to recon a peak about ten miles away. when they got there, they could be heard all the way back to camp speaking in their normal voices. the cold dense air, and lack of noise pollution allowed the sound to travel that far.

this is a cool site (pun intended)...

...you can go an the expedition, and still keep your fuzzy slippers on!

I didn't see that, but there was a show on Shackleton's voyage on PBS a couple of weeks ago. It was fascinating. It was especially interesting to me because I am taking a class on travel literature and the voyage metaphor, real and imagined. Neat stuff. They have cool stuff about it on the PBS website too.

I didn't see it, but I've read the book "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing. The only book I've ever read (and I have, literally, read thousands) that I did not put down. Read it while cooking, stayed up till all hours, neglected other work to finish it. Buy this book.
