whilst travelling today my sister pointed out a guy who looked exactly like me in the car next to us at traffic lights, she kept remarking on it and in the end I had to look. Now im worried that It could have been my doppelganger or 'double' and that im in real trouble-ive heard that they foretell bad luck and sometimes even death, im really scared, part of my mind is trying to reassure me and telling me that hes probably just a lookalike that its normal and many people have them, the other part of my mind is running into overdrive. What do people think is more likely?Have many seen their double and been fine?xx

I´ve seen my "doppelganger" and survived...lol
When I was 13 I lived in a small town and one day I was shopping and in this store there were mirrors on pillars. I looked at what I thought to be a mirror...WRONG, it was a girl my age, she looked just like me, she even had the same haircut. We looked at eachother and then she walked away. A year ago one of the staff at my sons daycare center told me that she had seen someone who looked just like. probably the same person...

Anyway, I´ve had my fair share of both good and bad luck, I don´t think that seing a "doppelganger" gives you bad luck. It´s just superstition, my 2 cents.

And here I was, thinking I should say something like "yeah, you should be scared for your life now, because you obviously should believe every possible thing anyone ever said, no matter how ridiculous", but I'll refrain.

There's aparantly a look alike of me running around the city too. One of my friends said she came up to "me" a couple of times in the city but "I" didn't recognise her and told her to go away or something.

I'm still kicking. :hahugh:

Superstition.
I knew a girl who lived right down the street from her look-alike for the longest time, and survived just fine. She had a hell of a time trying to convince us it wasn't her secret seperated-at-birth twin, though! lol.

I don't know much about doppelgangers and I've never seen another me around, but I agree with others, it's probably superstition, I think I do remember reading about the doppelganger once, and that it's not supposed to be seeing a physical similar person, but your fetch (I believe it's a Germanic spirit attached to a person), so unless you saw an incorporeal spirit that looked like you, I wouldn't worry (I'm sure someone else can explain that better than me).

I would love to say superstition...but you never know. ;)

I was originally going to make a twin joke, since I see my twin every day and I'm obviously still alive, but the doppelganger superstitions intrigued me.

It's probably just a coincidence. I once saw someone who looked incredibly like one of my friends while I was going somewhere, and the next day I asked her if she'd gone to Starbucks and she said, "...No."

She's still alive, too. 8O

You must keep in mind that the lore about doppelgangers, and people seeing them just before someone dies is rooted in 'clann-oriented' tradition. The 'seers' were not seeing an actual PERSON who looked like someone else, but they were seeing an apparition through the vehicle of second sight.

Yes, it would be very odd in a small clann or community group to see someone who looks exactly like someone else you know, especially when you know everyone who lives in the community and they were never there before.

You only saw them when you were driving by right? Maybe they only looked a little like you and if you had stopped and really studied them you would have noticed that they only slightly looked like you. That would freak a person out though I've never come across any one who really looks like me so I can't say how'd I react.

Is it possible that you were adopted? Is it possible that you had an identical twin that you never knew about? Is it possible that your mother had another child that you are not aware of?

I was at a Renn. Fairre here in the states one year with a female friend of mine, and I noticed a man working at a booth who looked JUST LIKE my friend's teenage son, only a few years older and with a beard... and I do mean, JUST LIKE HIM.

In amusement, I pointed him out and said, in jest, "look, there is your other son."

My friend was not in the least bit amused by my innocent comment. You see, she had put a male baby up for adoption about 5 years prior to when the son that I knew was born.

Now, this possibility might be even scarier than the one that you proposed, in which case, I do hope that I haven't upset you too badly.

(my friend, btw, did forgive me, but she does think that we did, indeed, see her other son). :shhhh:

You know, that's happened to me more than a few times as well... except in my case, I have people coming up to me saying, did you go to this high school, cuz you look just like this girl's friend of a friend of a friend! Guess every school must have that one loner girl who's half goth/half randomized style, and they all have my exact face or something! lol.

Firstly, I don't think it's insane to be worried about superstitious things. So, I also don't think that snide remarks are in order. The idea had to come from SOMEWHERE, so there's likely some truth in it, even if the idea is a little skewed or was altered in translation.

Secondly, Twin Flames aren't exactly your clone. Those are what happens when your soul is split into two parts at birth - the male and the female. Through each incarnation these souls experience, their lives are frighteningly similar. However, they never actually MEET each other until they have completed their final incarnation.
But that's a little off topic...

About this 'mirror image' thing... I agree with Faol-chù -- it's likely the original superstition came from a setting where it was highly uncommon for a person to see their physical twin unless they were actually born twins.

I know from experience that it IS creepy to see someone who looks almost exactly like you, but aside from the vague (or, depending on the person, intense) Twilight Zone feelings we get, I don't think there's much more to it.
We aren't snowflakes, you know. We're allowed to look similar. =P

A random look-alike isn't the same thing as a doppleganger. A doppleganger is when your spirit leaves your body and does whatever it pleases without your knowing about it. Though how it does that while you remain conscience is beyond me.
In high school, my look-alike was apparently named Vicky Angell. I'd go to the bathrooms after lunch and this random girl would call me Vicky and start talking to me. Nearly every day that semester. I told her several times that I wasn't Vicky, but she insisted I was. I even sounded like her.
I'm not Vicky Angell.
Yes you are.
No I'm not.
Yeah, try about a semester of that.
Okay I just looked her up on myspace, I don't look anything like her! We have vaguely the same face shape, but that's about it.
There was another one, Kristin, who this lady my mom knew insisted I was a dead ringer for. I wasn't.

I have yet to see someone who actually looks like me.

I knew two people who actually met their double in a random meeting on the street. Both died within days in freak accidents.

Just kidding. But at work, we have a wanted poster for some guy who stole a bunch of money, and above it, we've got a picture of one of our locals who looks exactly like him. Hehe. Though the wanted poster is a drawing, so who knows how much the actual guy looks like IT, let alone like our local man.

i know i have a look alike, i have never met her but quite a few people have seen her.

she looks so like me that my cousin who i saw every day at the time thought that she was me, he walked up to her at school and pulled on her braid like he would with me, she turned around and realized that it wasnt me only because she was wearing glasses. and even when he did see me a few mins later he asked me where did my glasses go.

people tell me i am her all the time, i know shes a waitress. i have had people mad at me for not talking to them because they thought i was her. i had some people call me a lier when i said i wasnt her.

whats even werider is that my mom also has a look alike, and they did see each other, but my mom is still alive (i dont know about the other lady though)

another odd thing is that both me and moms twin drive the same cars as we do. my co worker said he saw me one day, driving around as if i were on my way to work but he realized that it couldnt be me cause he knew that there was no way that i would be awake at that time of the morning. and then he remembered that i had said i had a evil twin.

i did loose out on a job cause of her, the lady who interviewed me asked if i had been there before and i said no i havent, she swore up and down that i had interviwed with me before. i said no but i do have an evil twin, and when she asked me why was she the evil twin i said cause im so good she has to be bad. (probably didnt find it much amusing)

I've never met my look-alike, I don't even know if I have one. No one I know has said they saw me, or thought they saw me, and it wasn't me. It's not exactly like my look is uncommon, but no one has seemed to see my look-alike...

I'd be interested to know exactly where you are getting this, because in my experience with Gaelic tradition, there is absolutely nothing which clafies this in this way.

Or is this a personal definition of yours?

Lol, I'm the evil twin.

Actually, I think I probably have a common phenotype or something, because I'm often being mistaken for other people.

The only one that I know her name is Katie, apparently an anthropology grad student at my alma mater. Back in college, I had people coming up to me at parties, thinking I was their TA in an anthro class, and I'd taken anthro classes where students (undergrad and grad) and the teacher thought I was this girl Katie. It was a bit disturbing. I actually went to the website to see if I could find a picture of her, but there were a few grad students, including a Kathleen and a Katherine, who didn't have pictures.... And I even went around the main anthropology building looking for her research lab... to no avail. I'm still curious.

I know they're not really my "doppelgangers" but I have fun thinking about them as such. Or that we're really evil clones who have infiltrated society and one day we'll be triggered to remember our programming and take over the world.
