Teiwaz is the first rune of the third Aett. The third Aett is the Aett of divinity, ruled by Tyr, chief god of order and justice and the harvest goddess Zisa. It is also associated with Mithra, god of mystery and is sometimes also called Mithra's rune. Teiwaz is the oldest name known for Tyr. It represents masculine energies. In this Aett, humankind either becomes divine or moves downward toward Ragnarok (destruction, the end of the world). The third Aett illustrates the gods and goddesses as divine tachers as they teach humans to master the energies of Oneness and in so doing become divine. The gaining of complete wisdom and mastery is the goal of Odin's quest. Tyr was also the god of sacrifice and patron of warriors, thus making Teiwaz the rune of warriors, especially spiritual warriors. Warriors carved Teiwaz on the tips of their spears and hilts of their swords. Teiwaz embodies the mystery of faith and spirituality and is also warlike and aggressive. Its energy can be used to move your goals forward, especially when there is struggle among the current energies.

I didnt know half of that!

I too have heard that it was carved on warriors shields aswell as there swords as Tyr's mark as he was the god of war. To give the warrior protection and bring about a swift victory.
It was always carved in blood Ive heard also? for these reasons of battle and power and thus has always been honoured in red.
& it is shaped like a spear, a weapon for the war god, god of vitory, pointing up to the heavens.

It symbolises power, strength, a spiritual warrior, a fighter in life, deadication and discipline. but can also mean to look inward into yourself to find answers and to fidn the strength you need. For this and all its strength, it is a very strong self empowering rune.

It can be used in healing to heal quickly and to give someone there strength back, to show them there strength, its great in meditation for gaining strength over a difficult situation or overcoming depression.

I have always found it a very self empowering, motivating, and physically powerful rune and one of my favourites :) Whenever this crops up in a reading I alwasy get it spot on and I always feel its Tyr's energy aiding me.

I like using this rune as a charm for when inner strength is needed. Good for standing up to bullies or when you need to make a strong stand on something.

As stated, Tiewaz is the Rune of Tyr, originally the old Sky God, ultimately replaced in that role by Odin. Tyr then became the God of War & Justice... the shape of Tiewaz is a spear (or sword), or the scales of justice. In a reading, it can indicate legal issues, or maybe a personal victory (& by extension, conflict of some sort). As the 'scales of justice', it might indicate that compromise (balancing the scales) is needed.

Tiewaz is also associated with the Irminsul, the Cosmic Axis on which the Universe turns... it is 'anchored' by Polaris, the North Star... Tiewaz can be a symbol of guidance, of finding your way when lost...

And according to Freya Aswynn, the Irminsul is a symbolic representation of Yggdrasil as the cosmic axis. She also connects Teiwaz with fertility as it implies the active, impregnating male force illustrated in the shape of the rune. 8O Tyr was the original Skyfather and the following rune, Berkana, is related to the Earth Mother and process of birth.....

Gee, SV, I didn't want to come right out and say the word:lol:

In the pagan wheel of the year, Teiwaz corresponds to Ostara, or Spring Equinox. A festival of birth, it corresponds to the runes when applied as follows: Teiwaz as the Skyfather, Berkana the Earthmother and Ehwaz as newborn life.

Sounds like this is a good rune for you right now, SV!:D

Teiwaz corresponds to the upcoming pagan festival, Spring Equinox or Ostara, along with Berkana and Ehwaz. Berkana is the Earthmother, Teiwaz the Skyfather and Ehwaz the newborn life. Rituals for this sabbat could be constructed along these lines.

When my son graduated basic military training for the Air National Guard, I gave him a Teiwaz rune pendant for protection, as this rune is the rune of warriors and soldiers. A friend of his who has joined the Army National Guard was recently deployed to "destination unknown" and it warmed my heart when my son told me that he had given him the rune before he left because "He needs it more than I do right now."

I realize I don't know a whole heck of a lot about runes yet. :)

But when I first took a good look at Tiwaz, what it said to me or the feeling I got, was focus- being focused on something, not loosing sight of what you're doing. Directing, keeping watch, focusing or managing. And strength, in a mostly defensive way, unless provoked.

does any of that make sense?

That definitely makes sense. Tiwaz is a rune of victory and in order to achieve victory one has to be focused on their goal. Also the rune of warriors, keeping watch, directing, managing and especially strength makes a lot of sense. Sounds like this rune speaks very strongly to you and could be of great assistance on your path :)
