Just out of curiosity, what language/s can you speak? I'd have made this a poll but I wouldn't be able to put in everything.

I speak English normally, but learn Irish and French at school.

Wow, lots of signers! :) I had two years of American Sign Language in high school. I haven't kept up with it, but I still know some vocabulary and have minimal receptive skills, haha.

That is so increadable! I wish I had the aptitude for languages that you appear to have. I know English though with my spelling that is sometimes questionable:) and I know some french I read it better than speak it and I can't spell in that language either.

english normally but I speak german fairly fluently. I just got back from there about 2 months ago, I was on foreign exchange for 6 months, and pretty much learned it all there. It was amazing and a lot of fun. Oh and I can speak some french (although I lost most of it while I was in germany) I used to know a few phrases in polish and navajo but that's long gone. I'd have to re learn it.

I speak English and used to speak Spanish fluently (I spent the summer in Mexico when I was 13) but I don't use it enough to retain it all.... when an emergency happens it pops right back but to hold a normal conversation - no way.

English & southside....a dying Milwaukee dialect. I can swear in Yiddish. I've taken a year each of Polish, Hebrew, Spanish, & German (years & years ago). I spent two weeks on my own in Poland (no tour, I was alone) & never missed a meal & always had a decent place to sleep. I picked up some more when I was there...Nie wiem is "I don't know" & Nie rozumiem is "I don't understand." :rotfl:
I've tried to study Spanish, Russian, Irish & Scottish Gaelic & Esperanto on my own. I never learned much because I have no one to practice with. My brother gave me a teach-yourself Welsh book & tapes once, but the tapes were from a different course then the book was. My sister gave me a computer Spanish course for my birthday, so I am going to try that. I am wild to find out what that psychic is saying...the one with the elaborate robes, on Univision.

I tried to learn Spanish but had a realy bad teacher so it kinda blew the whole language thing for me.

I had the same experience. Sometimes I wish I hadn't given up so easily, though, because Spanish would have been a very useful language for me to learn. Maybe I will try taking it again in the future.

it isn't surprising I have trouble with my French since my first teacher spoke russian before english and spoke french with a heavy russian accent then used the tapes that came with the books for the tests! It was like two different languages!

Would love to learn Spanish. We have lots of migrant workers here. Some of whom are drifters. Last spring a "drifter" found his way to our farm. (The farm is actually owned by another man. This fellow was kind enough to let us set up a mobil here and call it home for no rent!) The drifter asked the owner (some how) for a job and he readily agreed. Of course he had no where to live and the owner told him he could stay in the barn loft. The kids had been camping so we got the point across that he could stay in the tent instead. We feed him supper every night and also rounded him up some work clothes. My middle son shared a fire with him almost every night. And my brother-in-law visited with him as well. I just think it would've been nice to be able to carry on an actual converstion with him. My husband and I both know a few words but it's just not the same.

Hey I have a question, what is gaelic????

shnen
April 14th, 2002, 03:17 PM
gaelic:- Erse \Erse\ ([~e]rs), n. [A modification of Irish, OE. Irishe.] A name sometimes given to that dialect of the Celtic which is spoken in the Highlands of Scotland; -- called, by the Highlanders, Gaelic.

Well there you go! I thought it was Irish, but it's Scottish! hmm.:)

Éric
April 14th, 2002, 04:23 PM
Gaelic is actually a family of languages...Gaeilge (Irish), Gaidhlig (Scottish) and Gaelg (Manx). All are "Gaelic", but the only one usually referred to as such in English is the Scots Gaelic. Gaeilge is usually just called Irish, and Gaelg called Manx. Manx only has about a thousand speakers left in the entire world; the other two have a few hundred thousand.

Éric
April 14th, 2002, 06:22 PM
Right now, I'm studying Latina (Latin), Frysk (Frisian), Suomi (Finnish), Kernewak (Cornish) and Breizhnog (Breton). The latter two because they're the only extant Celtic languages I can't (yet) have a conversation in, the second and third because they're (relatively) endangered, and the first because everyone should know it. :) My next project is learning Gothic.

English, obviously, is my first language (well, maybe not so obviously ;)). But I've had 5 years of French and 3 years of German and 1 year each of Latin and Spanish. I'm planning on taking Italian next year in college. I also know the alphabet in American Sign Language. I know a little Braille, too. I'd take every language in the world if I could, but I think it's best to be really good at a few than sort of good at a lot.

Dalia

English is my native tounge, but I know a little japanese, (not much! Very simple things, I can't hold a conversation...yet! I can ask for the bathroom though ;) ), and I can read some spanish. Can't really speak it though. Really small vocab.
Like a lot of other people, I had a horrid spanish teacher, though I do enjoy the language.
I'm going to ,(HOPEFULLY), take Japanese again this fall, and I still want to learn spanish, but that's for after I get my BFA. :)

Isn't Gothic a dead language just as Latin? But as far as your language aptitude is concerned I'm full of admiration! I'd have to spend my whole life to learn so many languages :) Right now I can speak Polish and English fluently, and French and German so so, I'm learning Irish, though with poor results so far. Lack of extrinsic motivation, I guess
:D

I've heard Finnish is the second hardest language in the world to learn, I think. *scratches head*
First is Navajo for those who are wondering. *grins*

American English, :D pretty good at British English too.

I know enough Russian, French, and Spanish to get my self in trouble.....*laughs*...and could probably only get out of it in French.

Would like to brush up on my Russian, but can't ever seem to find the time.

And I've been studying Klingon off and on for about 3 years.

Interesting. I've heard that Chinese (Cantonese, I *think*) was the most difficult language to learn, because of the way sublte inflections of a word can change the meaning of the word. And I've heard that English is the most difficult language to learn to spell correctly.

I speak German, Spanish, and a bit of Italian.

Yep, they're both dead languages. Latin is useful for so much, though, and forms a heavy base for most of the non-Celtic and non-Germanic languages of Europe. Gothic is fairly useless, in an objective sense, but I'm going to learn it for personal pleasure. :)

Éric

Far as difficult languages...I can snap up a European language like *that*, but I've tried my hand at Native American and Oriental languages before; no dice. I just can't make my brain work right or something. (shrug)

Chinese,(cantonese) is supposed to be the most difficult language
to learn due to structure and usage, plus inflection. Like redneck
english. Takes a master of the language to mess it up so even
your own dont recognize it! Talking about the redneckese not
the chinese!

Use English for my daily language, but also know spanish, and french. I can read Hebrew and speak it a little but need to work on my comprehension. Of course I have little use for Hebrew now, so not working on it.

I'm trying to decide on a Native American language to learn now.
