Well, I just had my female great dane and female chihuahua fixed earlier today. I figured they would stay overnight, but they said they were ok to come home around 8 pm tonihgt.(dropped them off at 9 this morning)

Well my chihuahua(tundra) is doing as well as expected, but my dane is sick.

She's been throwing up some. And I'll take her outside and she is fine. I think the cool fresh air helps. She is fine for about half to a whole hour after I take her out.

At the moment I have her on the couch with a sheet(Sheets always seemed to be cooler than setting on the couch fabric to me). I have a fan on low blowing on her.

Is there anything else I can do? She is an older dog, 7(thats pretty old for a dane)

I can't give her anibiotics until she can eat and keep something down, she has no motion to eat tonight.

If I took her collar off, do you think that would help with taking breaths( If you've ever felt woosy and need a full breath. sometimes a necklace gags you. I think it might be the same for her)

Please help if you can. I want her to be comfortable and less painful.

Also I have a bowl of water next to the couch for her.

it sounds like she's reacting to the anesthesia used... hopefully it will be better in the morning. whenever i've had a pet fixed, the vet said not to give them food until the next morning. if she isn't better in the morning, i would give the vet a call, because she should be able to eat... good luck, i hope she's better soon...

I would take all food and water away until the morning. She'll be ok until then, but if she is drinking, that could be what is upsetting her stomache now.

Usually they say no food until the next day and water only so many hours after you get the dog home. But if she has already tried drinking, I would go ahead and take it away for the rest of the night.

She should be fine though. I would only take her out if she needs to go to the bathroom, other than that, try and keep her still and quiet. You could take the collar off, or leave it on, whichever you think is better.

Right now rest I think is the best medicine. Some pets, like people, respond differently after surgery. A friend of mine had surgery a few times, and my grandmother had surgery a few times to. Both were majorly sick afterwards. They just couldnt take getting put under.

But a cousin of mine had surgery twice and she could eat/drink/whatever just fine after she woke up from surgery, no problems.

SHe hasn't eaten or drank anything. I'll take them away.

I just don't know why they don't give them anything for pain...

Ok, I wasnt sure if she was eating or drinking anything. You just said that you had it down for her :P

Honestly, Im not one that wants or asks for the pain meds for my animals when getting spayed/neutered...however, none of mine have been 7yrs old either, or a dane.

I think with pain meds it depends, 7yr old dane probably would have been fine, but sometimes, younger, higher energy dogs need to feel that pain so that they dont think they arent hurt and end up ripping out their stitches or open themselves back up somehow.

It just depends...A vet should at least offer it I would think :/

Anyways, how is she doing today? Any better?

ETA: If you want to try it you can give her some rice and boiled chicken instead of dog food. It might be easier on her stomach.

She's not throwing up as of yet. Still not eating or drinking though.

I'm scared to give her her antibiotics if she hasn't eaten anything. Same with the chihuahua.

Call the vet. I had that happen with a dog once and they gave me meds that stopped the throwing up and gave them their appetite back.
If the dog gets to run down, infection can set in fast after surgery.
Call the vet. Post care is very important!
Hope all starts going well soon.

She's doing much better today. She's eaten a little and drinking. I gave her her antibiotic.

Tundra's doing good to.

Thinking about yesterday, I think she got sick because she cleaned the iodine off of her stomach. She only got sick after cleaning.

Thats odd of the vet/tech not to clean it off. All my dogs got cleaned off before they came home so that there wasnt anything to lick o.O

Well, glad she is doing better. It very well could have been the iodine. Poor girl.

They didn't do to well here. I love this vets office, but they must have someone new.

Last night I looked at tundra(chihuahua) she had blood on her back!
