View Full Version : Fox Familiar?

I live in suburbia, but we have a nice amount of parks, cemeteries, canals, and otherwise open areas around. A couple of months ago, I noticed some foxes running around but I wasn't surprised-- there's lots of places they could hold up in around here.
Then I saw them well into the winter months, all the time. Dusk, night, dawn, and morning. I was driving to work one day (5AM) and I saw one sitting on the sidewalk with a little kitty just a few feet from it. Of course, I started to brace myself since... yaknow... it's the dead of winter. There's not a lot of food around. The cat would've made a good dinner for that hungry fox. But nothing happened, they just sat next to each other, which I thought was incredibly odd considering. (Lucky cat, though.)
Recently, I was coming home from school and contemplating about how I hadn't seen any of them for a while. Then, BAM-- I see one. Today I was driving and thought that I should slow down just in case one of the foxes darts over the road: and then a fox pops out. The connection to me thinking about them and them showing up happened twice in a row.
So, coincidence? Has anyone else experienced this before? I've never thought about involving animal familiars into my path or practice; so if anything, they chose me and not the other way around (if that makes sense)-- has anyone heard of that? I'm not entirely sure why I would have any kind of familiar or animal totem at all, much less a fox.

You might want to look into kitsune. Kitsune are a Japanese fox spirit

I have heard of and experienced such things. I would say meditate on it and see what comes up. A few of my animal spirits came to me too lol.
I was just walking out of my shower one day and into my room. I paused at my altar really quick and I saw a Tiger leap down from on top of my altar and through me. This was all obviously a vision lol but still it was unexpected and really special.
Another instance this has happened to me I was passed out on my bed from Gods know what drug *this was about 6 months ago when I had this little nasty habit of trying to destroy myself* and I saw a deer spirit near my bed. I looked up the deer later on and it's meaning is love, safety, and rejuvenation. All of which I needed at the time. lol I'm quite lucky with the spirits that surround my life.

The Fox is my Animal Guide/Totem.
When I'd finished my Imbolc Ritual I went to look out my bedroom window (around 2am) and there was this Fox, sitting in the middle of my garden looking up at me, just like it knew I was gonna look out the window at that moment. The Moon was full too and shining down on her/him which made it even more special, Magickal, just Magickal. Just one of my experiences with the Fox.

My animal guide is a fox spirit, he has given me his name. He isn't an ordinary fox though...he has two forms a fox and human. He's more along the lines of a kitsune, but foxes are really special creatures. They represent a few things such as cleverness, intelligence, ect. So if you believe your animal guide is a fox, learn up on it, personally mine enjoys when I learn about him.

Can't speak for myself (wolf here) but my husband has a fox (sometimes I think he is one :-P). I tease him when he's being sly that he's married to me, not Mr. Reynard (my nickname for his totem).
I'm waiting for Mr. Owl to jump on this one. :-)

Okay, first a quick bit of semantics so you know the context that I'm working within.
A familiar is a physical animal that aids us in magical work--not just things like running to the circle any time your coven gets together, but actually working magic on your behalf. By necessity familiars are domestic animals, since wildlife generally isn't known for being that comfortable with humans (if a wild animal walks up to you, be ware of rabies). (I'm also aware that in the UK some folks use "familiar" in the same way folks in the states use "totem.)
Therefore, I don't see the fox as being a *familiar*. And I tend to be wary of animal sightings as being anything other than coincidence/you being in the animal's territory/etc.
Your best bet, IMO, is to ask the totem Fox yourself as to whether there's significance or not--go straight to the source, as it were. http://therioshamanism.com/2007/09/28/more-about-animal-totems/ has the meditation I use for working with totems; if I'm going down to talk to a specific totem, I go down into the meditation with the specific goal of locating that totem. So just go into the tunnel with the intent of talking to Fox to find out what's up.
Just my two cents, though.

I've had a fox run ten feet in front of my car [while I was driving.] Good thing I was going slowly. Fox could be your totem animal. I believe that they [totem animals/animal spirits] can appear in our dreams and communicate with us.
