I haven't been to talkative around Critter chat the past few days because its been a little rough going here.
Our mare, Shima is gone.
She was having a lot of behavior issues and I got a hold of a wonderful lady from a equine rescue here. She did some research and found out Shima is a wild mustang and has a history of problems and she has even hurt some people. This lady was going to take Shima to a Mustang Sanctuary in South Dakota which would of been fantastic for the mare. But it didn't happen.
During the process of checking out Shimas history, the equine rescue found the original owners. Turns out Karin wasn't suppose to have given Shima away. She had an agreement with the original owners to board Shima. So we had to give Shima back to the original owners. The sad part is that the original owners don't want to allow Shima to go to the Mustang Sanctuary. They decided they want the 300 dollars they can get at auction instead, AKA slaughter. Legally, theres nothing we can do.
I just hope the gov does pass the anti slaughter bill. People should not be able to make money off a horses life like this.
I don't want to talk about it anymore. Its been hell trying to do whats best for Shima only to have greed get in the way and laws that right now are no help for horses.
Also our little goaty Shilo is sick. He has always been the runt and tiny compared to the other goatys. He came down with goat Pneumonia. Its common for goats to get it but being such a runt its been hard for our little sweety.
I have had him on nutritional boosters and he had LA200 (a powerful anti-biotic). We are keeping him in the house till we know he will be ok and to get him built up enough so he can keep up with the rest of the herd.
He is doing better but being so small, he isn't as strong as he should be. Any energy would be appreciated for our little Shilo. Odds are not on his side since he isn't a strong goat to begin with.

May your wee goat feel better soon.

Oh sweety...I know times are tight, but is there any way you could make a deal with the owners, maybe you could buy Shima for the $300 they'd get at "auction" and make payments to them?

Thanks all. I don't think its all money and so simple. The Equine rescue is part of the Humane Society of the United States and the original owner through a fit that they were involved with Shima. I personally think they have crap to hide and thus don't want the equine rescue near them.
Getting quickly rid of the mare also takes away any possible reason for the rescue to check into anything.
I and the lady from the equine rescue ( name withheld for lack of permission) believe Shima was abused.
If they could of gotten Shima, they probably could of found out with a thorough the exam.
But, the owners eliminated us from finding out for sure.
We tried. We tried to do what was best for the mare. But its doesn't always work out for the best.
People who fear the humane society and the Ascpa shouldn't bother having any animals.
And now the people in my new little town here know that I will be watching them. If they have anything to hide, they better clean up their act.
There is no justification for abusing or neglecting any animal even food animals, including cows!
Livestock are still living and feeling creatures!
Sorry. But there appears to be a small circle of people here with little animal ethics, lack of care for laws, and to make matters worse, one of those people is the 4H leader for this area!! Makes me wonder how 4H runs things.

:hugz: I'm so sorry. Everything you say about these people sounds 100% true and the whole situation is just awful. :hugz:
If you find any humane association who will bid on her let me know and I'll contact them.

Shilo is hanging in there but still struggling. It may take a few days for the LA200 meds to show a sizable improvement. I hope it works because Shilos size is so against him.
Both he and his brother, Oshi, are my children's goats. Oshi is stunted but not so severely as Shilo. He functions just as well as the others in the herd. Shilo has always struggled to keep up.
We got Shilo and Oshi from the same farm as babies. The problem often is that farmers run a pygmy herd all together and let them breed freely. So you often get inbreds, especially since a 12 week old, not weaned buck, will breed with its mom and sister!
Its hard to find pygmy breeders around here that actually separate the goats at proper times and keep track of whom is breeding with whom.
Luckily for me, most of my herd came from a goat breeder that did use common sense and separated and kept track of all matings. I was able to get goats that are unrelated to each other and never were inbred because of this breeder. Shame she is moving and ending her goat breeding (divorce caused financial hardship). I'm gonna miss her. Sad to see responsible breeders go.
I just hope I do as quality of a job as she did.
So Shilo is still with us, tugging along feeling pretty lousy but still eating and drinking and going potty. He needs to eat more though. I am worried because his appetite isn't as good as it should be. He needs to eat hay to keep his rumen(thats a chamber of the stomach) working. Goats have 4 chambered stomachs. If the rumen was to shut down he would loose the capability to digest any food. He isnt eating quite as much hay as he should to keep that rumen going.
I have plenty of NurtiDrench for him. Thats similar to a liquid supplement that should keep is sugar levels up and keep him from lousing weight while going through this. It wont help his rumen any but it will keep him from loosing so much strength that he cant eat and chew cud. He is drinking his electrolytes well. :) That's a plus.

There are people in the wings watching for just that. If the location and timing are right, Shima may be saved. We're hoping.

Thanks guys.
He was getting better and today seemed real good, then he just keeled over.
Its rough. First time loosing a pet goaty.
Me and the kids were with him since he was staying in our living room.
I was right there when he suddenly just collapsed and I scooped him up. He took his last breath in my arms.
Odds are he had some birth defect since he never grew and was the size of a baby even though he was a half grown goat. His brother is so much bigger. I felt that someday this would happen but hoped he would just be our forever baby goat. Nature planned otherwise. :(
We just really miss our forever baby.

Thanks everyone. I don't even know why I'm online right now.
I just got done tucking in the herd for the night.
I'm tired as heck and everyone is in bed.
I'm feeling really weird, lost.
All the logic and such just doesn't seem to matter right now.
The herd seems to have a hole in it, my heart sure dose.
I'm just really missing that little guy.
He was that special one.
We had to feed him off to the side from everyone else or the bigger guys would take his share of food, so every time he ate, we sat there with him to be sure he got his share.
When we took the herd to the pasture, we carried Shilo cause he couldn't walk fast enough to keep up and would cry.
When is it was to cold and we had to move the others to warmer housing, Shilo we brought inside. Hid little body couldn't handle staying warm so at night and days below freezing, Shilo was in the house.
And when it was time to feed the goats grain (goat candy :) ) all the goats would push and shove to get the grain out of your hand, so with Shilo, one of us would scoop him away from the others so he could get his candy in peace. We all took turns feeding Shilo his grain by hand.
And when we bath the goats, Shilo was the one to get the blow drier! He loved the blow dryer. He always was so perky and all princely after a bath. :)
Shilo was our forever baby and we loved him just the way he was. I wish he could of stayed.
Dam I miss him.
"Shilo, you went away so fast. I hope you felt me holding you. I hope you heard me tell you we love you."
Dam, that sweet wonderful little angle. I wish I would of had a few more days. I didnt expect this today.
I'm so tired.
Oh Shilo.
I'm missing you.

Thanks everyone a lot.
I'm taking the pet herd and kids (human kids and goats kids too :) )out to the pasture this afternoon.
I'm hoping some good healthy play and romping with the herd will help the healing.
