POPPETS

Poppets are also known as voodoo dolls, and they have been used in magic for over 4 thousand years. Poppets are generally made to aid a person not to harm them (or stick pins in!).
They used to be made out of roots, wood or even potatoes. Although I feel it is more practical and longer lasting if they are made out of material.
Poppets are ideal for money, health, healing, luck or love spells.
e.g. if I wanted to find love I would make a poppet out of pink material and fill it with herbs such as: Apricot, Apple Blossom and Vanilla pods.
Whislt I was doing this I would imagine the herbs being the love I wanted filling my life.
I would then keep the poppet in a safe place and let the herbs manifeste into my 'love'.
Poppets are more of a personal thing, so it is best just to use them when making spells for yourself.
If you wish to make something for someone else I would recommend a sachet.
Below is a simple design for a poppet made out of a pair of socks.
I would like you all to try and make a poppet using any of the herbs listed in any of the lessons.

Making Poppets

To make the poppets you need a pair of socks. Children's socks are ideal, but any will do. Choose the correct colour for your spell i.e. Green for healing.
But if the colour is unavailable to you a white one will do fine.
Take the first sock and flattern it out. Make sure the heel is facing you. The heel is the bum of your poppet.
Turn it inside out and carefully cut the leg part of it up the middle until just before the heel.
Turn it inside out and sew them to make the legs, remembering to leave a small gap for the herbs and stuffing to go into.
Gently fill the body and legs with your enchanted herbs. Asking them to help you with what you want. Imagine you as the poppet and the herbs filling your life with what it is you want.
Depending how big your poppet is you can also place stuffing inside it to make it less floppy.

73771

Cut the second sock in half so you are left with the foot part and the leg part.
Take the leg part and cut it down the middle length ways. These parts will be used for the arms.
Turn them inside out and sew them up

73772

Again stuff these with herbs, visualizing your needs, and what you require of the herbs. You can again add stuffing or scraps of fabric to them.
Sew the arms to the body and if you wish you can add other things such as buttons for eyes.
Sew the bottom of your poppet up and that's it!!

73773

Either keep the poppet with you or place it in a safe place where it won't be disturbed.
Replace the herbs every three months, as the power of them will eventually fade.

Sweet, I've never made one like this. I usually just draw a face on the sock and stick my hand inside it. I'll try this, this weekend.

OK there is no way Im posting pictures LMAO but I have my Poppets done. yep thats right I ended up making 2. I thought it would be fun for Toria and I to make our own together. I should have thought we could make onetogether LMAO anyway I ended up making two mine and finishing up Toria's. They arent pretty but they are done.

Eternal Nite you were wonderful with the advice.

I ended up stuffing them with dried rosemary, lavender, Eucalyptus, and as advised by EN ginger. I did also stuff them with some stuffing .

I have some left over herbs and Im going to sprinkle them on the carpet to make them smell good.

But overall it was a lot of fun and did include some family quality time.

My herbs werent crushed so they do stick out of the socks in a lot of places so I dont think we will be able to actually sleep with them. But Toria has a head board that I can place hers on and mine can go on the bed side table next to my bed. I wouldnt be able to smell the herbs from there but short of tying it to my head board I dont knwow here else I would put it. We sewed ours with yarn and a yarn needled so in places you can see the stitches but I wanted to keep Toria's little fingers safe.

we only seem to have black socks in our house or ones with the incredibles on (the hubby will definately not let me have those he is too attached) can I make them out of black socks even if I want to use it for something such as healing- if i put the right energy in will that be ok? Am going to try and get the other half involved when he finishes work because he has been following along despite not being signed up. Sounds great fun tho!!!

OMG i have the funniest story to tell you about these silly Poppets. Toria decided they needed eyes. So ok we establish we will get some eyes for them no biggie I can run to michaels and pick up some buttons. So this morning she tells me her Poppet needs a belly botton!!!! Yea ok so I can use one of the cute little buttons I baught for the belly button (they are hearts and stars). So then of course we all know you cannot go into michaels and buy just what your going in there for. What do I buy for the dog gone poppet???? A wig! :awilly: I am just as bad as my daughter! So now once we get the wig and the buttons on I might just have to post a picture cause it is going to look so rediculous.

Now I am scared to know what our next task will be. 8O

mine kinda looks like two socks vaguely sewn together. The other half gave up after throwing it across the room when he stabbed himself with the needle. Vishasmommy 8O i really really want to see yours- mine wants a belly button but firstly i have to establish where the tummy is!!! Going to have another go again because this one is a wierd person!!! the hubby will go mad cos we have already used a couple of socks!!! Nevermind i am really enjoying it anyway

I made mine for a friend who needs some protection right now.
I used flax seeds, the skin from a squash/gourd, and some peony flowers (hopefully she can stand the smell of the peonies. I personally cant!) and some stuffing.
As soon as I get a review from her on if its helping, I will let you know!

The Poppet saga in our house has gotten even better. For the Kithchen Witchery class we have to pick out a Kitchen Goddess. So I was talking to Toria about this, although I had pretty much decided. We both we in agreement so I told her I would ask to be put on hte list for another of Nebra's georgous statues and I would make a kitchen alter. Toria pops off with "We can use my Poppet as a Goddess" All I could do is laugh.

So now poor little poppet has eyes, a belly button, a wig, and asperations to be a kitchen Goddess.

After I was done laughing I explained to her that Ms. Poppet was made to go next to her bed to help her sleep and not sit in the kitchen.

Hi can you fill me in on more about popets please? I've made one form calico and cotten balls. But how does one use the popets? I've been told that once you have made a link between the doll and the person it represents than you only have to whisper to it. So how does one crissen it? please could you send me mor info please.

Isnīt this kind of dangerous? I mean, in the wrong hands like when someone wantīs to hurt someone else?

Kaylara
November 13th, 2010, 11:08 AM
Yes, but that can honestly be said about 90% of magickal things. Those who can heal can hurt and all that. I don't think they're inherently dangerous in and of themselves.
