Warning - this is a rant! Ugh!! I'm trying to keep upbeat, but life is scary right now!

About three months ago my eleven year old daughter, Anna had what looked like a big zit in her right armpit. I took her to the doc and he put her on antibiotics and it went away. Well, about a week and a half ago she brought it to my attention that it was back - with a fury! The doc thought it was probably hydradenitis - which I'd never even heard of. It was huge - like golf ball size and the skin around it was dark purple with red streaks coming from it - definite infection!

Well, this was in the middle of her high stakes testing week at school. Its this stupid test that she has to pass in order to advance to the next grade. She's a great student - but it was just one more thing to add to the stress. Rather than have her miss school the doc put her on more antibiotics. She made it through the week, then we went to the hospital where they cut out the boil and sent it for a biopsy. Now she has a hole in her arm that we have to pack with gauze - just torture for the poor child! Thank goddess the doc had mercy and gave her some Lortabs.

Well, as if this isn't all enough - the biopsy comes back and she has MRSA! Yikes! Now she's on some antibiotic that cost ....... get this.........$2,000!!!! OMG!!! And its made her sick as a dog. She can't go to school until who knows when. I'm just freaking out! I'm thinking about just home-schooling her for the rest of the year. The medicine she's taking is going to kill her immune system and we all know what germ havens school can be.

I sent my other two kids to stay with their father and I'm CLEANING (that's an understatement!) the whole house. I feel so guilty because I am afraid I somehow gave it to her because I'm a nurse and I work in the hospital (or did until I quit two months ago). The wound is looking a little better, but now the area below the sore is huge and swollen. I'm really scared for her.

We go back to the doctor tomorrow, so hopefully I'll know more then. Thanks for listening - and please keep her in your thoughts!!

You are right to keep everything around her EXTREMELY clean, although the MRSA could have come from the beginning treatment, since it is a horrible nosocomial infection.
With as much as we wash our hands at work, and dispose of our waste in a proper manner, YOU are not to blame here. HOWEVER, I would look in to having the insurance company, the hospital or the Dr's office take a GOOD inspection of the practices by the workers in the area.
It is so hard to be diplomatic here, but I think that you are catching my drift.
You KNOW the symptoms are going to debilitate this young precious woman, so perhaps you can arrange for her testing at home, through tutoring.
This is perhaps another problem that the insurance company/facility should e responsible to provide.
In the meantime, watch her diet and watch the side effects with direct means of her diet. She needs all the healthy food she can get in to herself.
AND, she needs to move around a bit to keep up her strength.
All blessings and meditations to you and your family. And prayers to you all.

Also, is the MRSA from the lab? a faulty collection procedure? Check it out and get a second opinion. Where would she have picked this up to begin with?

To anyone who happens across this message.....PLEASE go look up MRSA!! Education is your best defense! This is some scary stuff and I'm amazed at how under-educated the public is! Even the docs and nurses are pretty ignorant to it! I thought my family was immune because I am very clean - but I know now that this can affect anyone!!

I know what you mean. I worked in a hospital for 4 years, I still don't know what exactly MRSA is but I know we took alot of precautions to prevent infection. The strange thing was, the hospital wasn't worried about the employees infecting the patients, they were worried about the patients giving it to us!! My thoughts go out to you and your daughter!!!!!!!

When I was able to work, U would undress in the garage(when they wouldn't let us wear scrubs on the floor) and take my shoes off at work and leave my shoes there. Then I would drop my white uniforms in a washer full of bleach and detergent in the garage and let it go at that. Then head right to the shower before I greeted my animals and worked in my house. That was before MRSA (I am old). I was so paranoid about bringing something home. My nurse friends even told me I was paranoid. But, I never got the flu or anything bad from work. I even washed my scissors and pens and things in antibacterial soap and let them soak.
Bless you and your young one. MRSA is SO very rough. You have my prayers and meditations.
