um, did anyone read some of that....stuff? I am a christian and
found it upsetting. Very judgemental covered in I hope you change cause...
Unless God comes down and tells you personally, no one knows
what will happen to you. If you believe and follow the book, thats
the best you can do. Remember the word was written by mortals
and has been reinterpreted many times. I suppose if you wanted
to read the bible you should first read it in original language? Jewish and Greek(greek for NT) Lots of differences in wording.
Also, for those familiar with the word, you have two separate
sets of 10 commandments...Jewish and Catholic....?(not a scholar and havent read the tolmud(sp?) hmmm....OT?

That's a good point Flar. Unfortunately I can't read Jewish or Greek or any of the early languages the bible was written in before all the translations and mis-translations and deliberate re-writings took place.
Those who do try to live their lives according to the rules of the bible as it is written now often mis-interpret it and/or accept someone else's not-quite-correct interpretation. How can they actually believe that "Thou shalt not commit adultery", which to me seems to mean one shouldn't break the vows one makes to a marriage partner, to mean one shouldn't have any sex outside of church-recognized marriage?
Suckling/LS, it does little good to argue about sin or the bible with people who only believe what they are told (or think they've been told), and never question it because "The bible said it and I believe it, and that's all folks."

But before anyone does. The site has a Christian dating thing at "adammeeteve.com" isn't that just asking for trouble? :D Okay, it's not funny but I just worked with snails for an hour. Anything is funny after that (ironically I named them after the Marx Brothers).

Really, what did you hope to accomplish talking to that bunch closed-brained backwards fanatics? You'd get closer to the truth by talking to a wall. I have spoken to several walls while I was drunk, and the experience was far more enlightening than the conversations I have with Christians. All of their answers all boil down to "Because God SAID so".... which we both know is really no answer at all. They claim their understanding of Divinity allows them to defy basic logic and common sense. It doesn't.
So don't get yourself all wrapped up arguing to them. Most of them have been brainwashed from a very young age not to question the beliefs they were indoctrinated into, and no amount of logic or sense is going to change that. You can laugh at them, and read those funny Chick tracts, and take enjoyment that way, but don't try to explain to them WHY they are so funny... some people just can't get the joke, which is sad when the joke is THEM.

I really enjoyed that debate... mainly because, they never really answered any of your question... they skirted the question. And this little exerpt from someone on that board....
"Millions of abortions, AIDS, various other STDs, unwanted children, poverty, depression, anxiety, broken homes, prostitution, suicide, crime and drug use are all symptoms of a society that's favorite motto is "if it feels good, do it". "
Excuse me, but this happens in legal marriages too. Just because you're married doesn't mean you want to have the child you found out you conceived, because obviously the condom didn't do what it was supposed to do. Sorry, I'm a little bitter. I was depressed, incredibly poor, anxious, did drugs, contemplated suicide... and I was married, and yes, in the name of "God" (cause my x was a christian and denied my witchy life). Of course, I got out of that marriage, and now, I'm happy as a clam. All I'm saying is.. all of those things happen EVERY SINGLE DAY in legal christian marriages.
I don't think I'm ever going to get married again, legally. I may have a handfasting ceremony... but I truthfully don't believe I have to have a piece of paper to tell me who I'm going to be with for the rest of my life. Of course, I don't believe in hell, so I guess I've got nothing to worry about.

It's funny reading this since my family is all die hard Christians.. they always just seem to have this glaze over look in their eyes and in their speech. and with all their responss, it's like they have all been dictated to say the same thing... no real indiviuality...
~~ just an observation.:)

Interesting point. I've noticed that too. Also, I've noticed that my Christian friends are a lot more obsessed with sex than my pagan friends.

Michael,
You seem like a great kid, you really do......so why bother explaining to them what you believe. They're not going to change.
I'm the first to admit I'm naturually apprehensive of Xian's....when someone says that they're Xian I kinda wait for the other shoe to drop.
I came to be an Old Trad Witch about two years ago, I"ve got a long way to go, and let me tell you I've never been so at peace with myself and my decisions as I am now. I still struggle with it from time to time.....I know I can't just tell everyone what my religion is without facing some sort of scrutiny. Generally, very negative.
It amazes me that Xian's expect you to justify what you believe...but when you ask them why they believe that sex outside of marriage is a sin.....the general answer is 'Because the lord tells us that it is'. Okay, but what do you believe......"I believe the Bible"......now that tells me absolutely nothing at all. It's very sad, yanno to hear people talk like that.
It's so typical of Xian's......or atleast that's been my experience. I put blood, sweat and tears into a great cause and when I told the two organizers about my religion they kicked me off the group for a very bogus reason. All my hard work was nullified because I didn't fit into their Xian, virgin image. This was not a prereq for me to volunteer on the committee.
Anyway, I wish you luck in finding who you are and what you believe. I know it was hard for me, but I've learned what makes me feel good and whole.
Although, I do ask goddess to release me from the general disdain that I have for most Xian people.

they're not all like that isis, it's just that the arrogant, obnoxious and intolerant ones draw the attention precisely because of what they are. nor is that type found only among christians, they're everywhere, in most religions. the "true believers" warping the teaching to condemm non-believers as "outlaws" who have no rights the "true believers" are bound to respect and anything they do to an unbeliever is right because (insert diety of choice) said so in (insert "holy book" of choice). we pagans are fortunate that we see less of that among us because of the diversity of our paths but even we are not immune.

Now, I know that not all Christian's are like those closed-minded individuals who posted to Lettuce's thread. However, the first thought that ran screaming through my mind when reading those posts was, "salvation isn't simply a reset button."
It scares me to consider how many individual's actually believe that since they are "saved" all they have to do is ask their diety for forgiveness and all is fine and dandy again. What about taking responsibility for the actions involved in said "sin"??? What about the consequences of said "sin", not only to the individual, but to any others that were effected???? Does this simple act of asking forgiveness (that big shiny reset button) undo all the harm that may have been caused to everyone involved resulting from the one individual's "sin"???
**stepping off soapbox now**
Things like that thread make me really appreciate the Christian's I consider friends.....those that take responsibility for their actions and make every attempt within their power to live a good life based on the doctrines that they believe.......those that have some compassion and understanding towards someone who does not follow their chosen faith. Goddess has been good to me.
Blessed Be.
