I know that I am an obvious neophyte when it comes to much of anything with plants. But I have been bitten by the gardening bug and I'm starting to learn how to take care of plants. Of couse, I'm rambling, but I'll get to the point eventually. :)

My mother and grandmother are both quite knowledgeable on foraging and how to do things like preserving food. I'm wondering if I'm possibly the only one in here that is interested in finding something to eat outside of their garden or the market? If so, possibly we could trade recipies or thoughts on the issue. :)

For my part, I've found that dandilion leaves and blossoms are great in salads. I'm trying to get my grandmother's recipie for fried and battered dandilion blossoms, I think its in the cookbook that I left back home. :( But if you're going to be using dandilion leaves in a salad, please get them before the blossoms open. Other wise their horribly bitter. :o A good dressing to use on a salad with dandailion in it is raspberry vinegrett (sp?) or possibly an itialian dressing. :)

I'll try to find some of the other stuff that I have on foraging and post up here soon. :)

I think the purple flowers you were referring to are Violets.. and yeah they are yummy.. some people candy them and use them as edible decorations on cakes

You can find all kinds of stuff in your yards, not just to eat, but for teas and herbal remedies. that violet you were mentioning? Remedy for ulcers, cough, colds, sore throat, and asthma.
Dandelion? a great blood purifyer, and helps water retnetion.
There's plaintain, and heal all, and chickweed, too, and I'm way up in michigan.
If you google wild foods or foraging, I bet you'll get a lot of great sites.
