View Full Version : Missing grandchild!

We could use some calming energies at our house. The 9 year old just came home and asked if her 5 year old sister had stayed home from school today because she wasn't on the bus. I called the school and learned that there was substitute teacher in the Pre-K class today and apparently there was a mix up and she put our Nove'Mber on the wrong bus. The secretary is calling the drivers of all the buses to find out which bus she ended up on.
We've had a couple of substitute bus drivers lately too, so the poor little kid is probably all confused and doesn't know how she got lost and just wants to come home. So energy for her too, to get her home safe as quick as possible!
Thanks
UPDATE: I added another post, but coulda/shoulda added an update in this post. She was found still on the wrong bus, she hadn't gotten off, and was brought home safe. Damn, that was scary and I plan on talking to the principal about making sure substitutes follow the policies in place for keeping our children safe.

She's home now! Whew.
This school is on top of things. They know our girls and they got busy figuring out what happened and sorting it out right away. Not like when her sister got off the bus at the wrong stop back in Wichita and the people in the office at the school seemed clueless in what to do to find her. (She made it home safe too.)
The substitute teacher put her on the wrong bus - even though she has a number on her backpack to tell what bus she goes on, they all do. The driver on that bus was a substitute too. Thankfully she didn't get off since she didn't recognize "her corner". Our regular driver went and met the other bus and brought her right to our door - which is where she picks Nove up at noon.
Nove'Mber isn't upset about the mixup at all apparently. We talked to her and will remind her every few days, that if she ever gets on the wrong bus she should go and talk to the driver and tell them that she wants her sister on the other bus.
Thanks for the energies, Gwen. Much appreciated.

It all went down very quickly and was resolved quickly as well. Thank the Gods! It wasn't as scary as it was when it happened the first time with Katlin when she was in Kindergarten, but then we knew that she had actually gotten off the bus but we didn't know where she had gone after that. She went home with a classmate whose mother wasn't home and the babysitter didn't know what to do, wasn't even sure but there had been a prior arrangement for Katlin to go home with Karisma.
The Pre-K and Kindergarten kids all have stickers on their book bags with their name, address, and bus number on them. Our girls ride bus #5 but the substitute teacher put her on bus #2... kinda makes me wonder if the sub-teacher has dyslexia?
This is the kind of stress no parent ever wants to deal with. And it really makes me sympathetic to the parents whose kids don't come home quickly and safely.

I'm glad everything is ok and she made it back safely.
Out of curiosity, does she go to a big school or something? I don't know what the usual method is for getting kids to their correct number of bus now, but when I was a kid, we didn't have anyone to show us, we were expected to know (as far as I can remember, who knows, maybe I've forgotten something among all the many other details of school).
Seems like an excellent idea though for kids her age, and it makes me wonder why we didn't have it, given that children are sometimes only just beginning to learn to recognize numbers when they get start school.
Just curious, and it makes me wonder if I'm remembering my own childhood wrong, because it seems like it would have been a weird oversight not to have bus supervision for children so young when I was in school...then again, they never noticed once when I left in the middle of the day, so maybe I was just independant at that age and they didn't notice me and I didn't notice them....
Again, glad she made it back all right.

They do have supervision to make sure the Pre-K and Kindergarten kids get on the buses or go off with the right person who's picking them up. Some of the Pre-K kids do recognize the numbers on the buses and most of them know their regular bus driver.
But today there was a substitute teacher in my granddaughter's class and she apparently put her into the wrong group to ride the wrong bus. And the driver of that bus was also a substitute so s/he didn't realize .....
Just took a call from Nove's teacher asking if Nove was okay and not traumatized. Nove seems fine, it was her sister that was scared so badly when Nove wasn't on the bus and wasn't at home either.
It turns out that the teachers actually have a master list of where each child goes when school is out (on which bus, with which parent or guardian, to latch-key program). The list showed that Nove rides bus #5 but for some reason the sub. teacher asked the kids which bus they ride. These are 4 and 5 year olds! When she asked, Nove said she rides bus #2, and even though the Official List says she rides bus #5 the idiot let her get on the wrong bus! GRRRRRR!
She asked the bus driver if Nove rides that bus and the substitute driver didn't check her/his list in the bustle of all the kids boarding and just said Yeah Okay. GRRRRRR!
I will be -so- having a talk with the principal tomorrow!

at least there was no true harm done this time, and maybe it will stop a mistake like this from happening again, maybe with serious consequences.

Yes, that's why I'm planning to talk to the principal, to make sure that the policies to keep the kids safe are explained to the substitutes and are followed by everyone.
I've gone from being scared to death, to being angry, to feeling like just plain bawling now. And I have a migraine from the stress. Ack. But at least my baby is safe. :)

Thanks, me too. I would never have believed that this would happen to us a second time, especially since this is a different school than the first incident and we thought they had better safety policies.
