Are we born with one, or do we earn it? Do you believe in them at all?

I have to agree with Xander. To my way of thinking, the soul is the "divine spark" that animates (and connects) all living things.

I most definitely believe that we all have souls. Since everyone has a soul in my opinion, I don't think that people earn their souls. I agree with Felidae that the soul is the "divine spark." Our souls make us special and give us that divine touch that we use throughout our lives.

I agree, I think our souls are what make us unique in our personalities and thoughts. They're what give us our inspiration, and allow us to connect with whatever Deity we believe in.

I'm still debating with myself about souls. I mean, I think there's something there, no matter what name we give it (a rose by any other name, right?), but I'm not sure what it does.I can't think what it does. I mean, some people say it's our personality - but our personality is just blips in our brain (or so I am told). Some people say its what gives us life - but air and food and good times give us life. The soul, perhaps, I have come up with, is what makes all this happen, but I'm not so sure if that's not scientifical as well.
I know for certain (well, IMO,) that the world, perhaps even the universe, has a soul, something that sets everything in action, that starts all these blips in the brain, that gives us oxygen, that created life. Yes, some people may refer to this as a God, perhaps (in our cases ;)) gods and goddesses. That we all share the same 'soul', and that this 'soul' is running through everything, down to the smallest quark inside the smallest atom. That the gods and goddesses, as we call them, are part of everything.
It infuriates me when I explain to people that I believe that everything I can't see, touch, taste, smell, hear, or sense doesn't exist (I'm sorry if that's self-centered, but for all I know, I could be the only one in the universe that actually exists, everyone else is a fragment of my imagination), and they ask me if that's so, then how can I believe that the gods and goddesses are real. Well, I don't believe they're material, I believe that it's this...somethingthat's coursing through our veins, our cells, our very core. I believe...I'm not sure what I believe.
I'm sorry, I went off on lots of different tangents there, I contradicted myself several times, trying to explain to you what I don't know myself. I know what I'm trying to say, but I can't put it into words. I can't explain it now, I'm in a bad mood. :( I don't even care if no-one had the time to plough through all that, I'm just glad to get it into words (of a sort).

Yes...
depends on what kind of soul you believe in, how many, and the basics of that souls reality. I believe that you are the body soul from conception and then the upper soul descends into the body during birth after which time the lower soul emerges (or ascends with the upper soul, depending, if the child is sick it is said that the lower soul has not emerged yet and must be found or the child will die...). The other four develop through the life of the individual and depending on were the upper soul is/was at the start of the incarnation they might not develop at all or they might already be fully developed.
Throw in the idea of spirit being seperate from the soul... Spirit flows through all things and it must then be that every thing has a capability to channel the spirit and thus a rudementary soul...
