Greetings to All! I have a question concerning the authenticty of a stone I just recently aquired; I was told it was a purple agate, and that it wasn't dyed. Is this possible? I can't seem to find evidence anywhere of the existance of true "purple agates", and was hoping maybe somebody here may be able to help clarify for me?!?

Agates form the color of whatever happens to be in the sandstone when they are formed. It is definitely possible to have a purple agate. Whatever mineral makes an amythest purple could also make an agate purple . . . possible bromine but don't quote me on that ;)

Agate is a variety of quartz, and is usually seen as moss agate, and blue lace agate. There is also a fancy multicolored agate with fanlike patterns that look like sea coral or branches. Sorry, I forget the name.

Petrified wood is an agate.

I also know that agate can be easily dyed, and frequently is. I think if you do a search of gemstone lore you might find something.

There is a rare gemstone that is light, sort of lilac, in color. It's called lazulite, but I don't know if it is related to agate. I think it's supposed to be a channelling stone.

Hope you find something.

whoah!! If there's purple agate, I gotta get a piece of it!! ;)

hehe I don't see why it couldn't be. . . though I'm no expert on stones (see my "all those pretty rocks!" thread in Magick and Rituals. . . :D )

o.o how on earth do they dye stone??

most stones are porus, I guess if you leave one in dye long enough ........it'll take.........I know heat can affect the color of stones, maybe it can do agate???

I'm pretty sure lazulite is not an agate. I think it's probably closer to lapis lazuli (Lazulite has a hardness of about 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, and agate being in the quartz family, should have a hardness of 7)

As amethyst is also quartz, so I suppose there could be a purple agate that is undyed.

Any other amateur geologists/rock hounds out there that knows the answer to this question?

Hope that helped a little!
